Chapter two

Chapter Two Six Years Later: Fate brought them together. Six years could change maybe a little of a person's life, but in Evelyn's case, the six years had entirely changed everything. The woman she had once been no longer existed, or at least, that was what everyone would have believed if they had seen her standing beside the hospital window that morning. She stared at the busy street below, her fingers tightly wrapped around a cup of untouched coffee. River-City was nothing like a place she had ever lived, probably because there were too many things she couldn't remember. She had spent years trying to fill the empty spaces in her mind, but every attempt ended the same way. Nothing, no husband, no wedding, no family. No memories of the life she had apparently lived before the accident. Sometimes, she wondered whether losing her memory had been a blessing; other times, she desperately wished she could remember something. "Mum” A faint voice pulled her from her thoughts. Evelyn turned in the direction where the voice emerged and smiled slightly. Her six-year-old son was sitting on the hospital bed; his tiny legs were covered with a white blanket. His face looked pale, but there was a small smile on his lips. "You're thinking again," the little boy said. Evelyn smiled and walked toward him. "Am I?" She put on a fake expression as if she wasn't aware. "Yes." He nodded, confirming his instincts were always right. "How do you know?" She moved closer to him. "Because you make that face." He imitated her by furrowing his brows and puffing out his cheeks. Despite everything, Evelyn laughed. "You little troublemaker." She reached out and gently squeezed his cheek; she wanted to see her son giggle. For a moment, everything seemed normal until her eyes fell on the medicine bottles beside his bed. Her smile faded instantly; she had spent all she had on medicine to treat her son, and now the doctors had explained his crucial condition to her countless times. Because of complications surrounding his birth, his body had remained fragile since infancy. He required regular medication and constant medical attention, and now, his treatment had become more expensive, far more expensive than Evelyn could afford. He needed to go for surgery. She had sold almost everything she owned, taken every small job she could find, borrowed money from Mia countless times and worked until her body ached. Still, it wasn't enough. She stared at Liam lying on the bed. "I'll find a way," she whispered to herself. He smiled at her. "I know you will, Mum." Her heart tightened; even when she only twisted her lips, Liam would always understand what she was trying to say. She leaned forward and pecked his forehead. “You're the smartest boy, sweetheart” She had promised herself that no matter what happened, she would never let her son suffer because she couldn't afford his medical treatment; that was why she had decided to come to River-City. There was one hospital in the city that specialised in cases like his. It was supposed to have some of the best doctors in the country, but the only problem was that the hospital was expensive; nevertheless, that wouldn't stop her from looking for the money to take the treatment. Evelyn now needed money, in fact, a lot of it, and she had no idea where to get it. Her friend, Mia, entered the room carrying a paper bag. "You're still here?" Evelyn turned around with a facial expression that said Where else could I be. Mia sighed. "I mean, you were supposed to meet me downstairs an hour ago." "Oh, that's true. I got distracted… by him?" Evelyn glanced at her son. "By my son." Mia smiled. "Fair enough." She placed a bag on the table and pulled out several documents. "I found something." Evelyn immediately became interested. "What? A job?" Evelyn took the papers; her eyes searched through the paperwork, and her gaze moved over the details. It was a position for a chef at a billionaire's private residence; the salary got her attention and made her eyes widen. "This can't be real." "It is," Mia replied, nodding her head. "Why are they paying this much?" "Because the employer is ridiculously rich." Evelyn continued reading, then she noticed one particular requirement. “Male applicants only” Her expression fell. "Forget it, I can't do it" "Why?" Mai said between chewing bubbles. " Because I'm not a man. Can't you see the requirement? Even though I'm a professional chef and the salary is great, I still can't do it," she shook her head in disagreement. Mia stared at her; Evelyn stared back. There was a dead silence between them; neither spoke. Then Mia slowly smiled. "No” Evelyn immediately shook her head. "Absolutely not." She waved her index finger continually in the air. "You haven't even heard of my idea..." Mia tried to calm her down. "I already know your idea." She cut in before Mia could explain anything. "You could do it." "Mia." She rolled her eyes. "Think about your son." Evelyn looked toward the hospital bed, her son's innocent smile faded into the back of her mind as she remembered the doctor's words. “The treatment can’t be delayed” She closed her eyes; for her child, she would do almost anything. Even something completely ridiculous. Mia folded her arms. "So?" Evelyn stared at the job application for several seconds, then she exhaled. "When do I start?" Mia's smile widened. "That's my girl." Evelyn didn't smile; it was more like she wanted to force herself into doing something ridiculous. She didn't know yet that accepting that job would change her life again because the man whose mansion she was about to enter was not a stranger. He was the man she had once loved, the man she had married years ago. The man whom she had never remembered. The man who believed she had died in the accident, and neither of them knew that fate was about to place them under the same roof.
