Chapter Three The Man Behind the Name Evelyn stared at herself in the mirror for several seconds. She couldn't recognise the person staring back at her because she looked completely different. Her long blonde black hair was gone. She touched the short strands around her ears, still unable to believe she had actually allowed Mia to cut it. "This is insane," she muttered. Behind her, Mia folded her arms "Insane?" Evelyn turned around "Look at me, look at my hair" " Of course I can see you," Mia replied casually as if it were nothing. "I look like a teenage boy." Mia smiled triumphantly. "That's the point." Evelyn groaned and looked back into the mirror. The oversized white shirt concealed her figure, while the loose black trousers completed the disguise; a cap sitting low on her forehead made her face look sharper. Mia had even taught her how to slightly deepen her voice. It was ridiculous and embarrassing, but she had no choice. Evelyn glanced at the hospital documents lying on the table. Liam needed treatment, and that was all that mattered. She picked up the fake identity card Mia had prepared. “Ethan Miller” She stared at the name before she finally asked. "Who is Ethan Miller?" "You are," Mia replied sharply. "I don't even feel like myself anymore." Mia's expression softened. "You don't have to feel like him. You just have to convince everyone else that you are." Evelyn sighed and picked up her bag. "Fine." Mia smiled. "Ready?" Evelyn nodded and smiled "As ready as I'll ever be." --- The Hargrove residence stood at the end of a private road surrounded by towering trees and an enormous iron gate. Evelyn stared through the car’s window. The mansion was breathtaking. It wasn't merely a house; it looked like a place where the president of the country resides. Dark stone walls rose beneath the afternoon sky, enormous windows reflecting the sunlight. Two security guards stood at the entrance while another pair patrolled the ground. Evelyn swallowed. "This man must be stinky rich." Mia glanced at her. "He is Damian Hargrove…. You've never heard of him?" "No," Evelyn replied. Mia gave her a strange look. "He's one of the most powerful businessmen in River-City." Evelyn shrugged. "I don't care how powerful he is” She tightened her grip on her bag. "I just need the job." The gate opened as the car moved in. Evelyn's stomach tightened; she didn't know why, but something about the mansion felt strangely familiar. She hurriedly pushed the thought away. “You don't remember anything…there was no reason to trust a feeling”, she cautioned herself. The car finally parked at the garage; Mia turned toward her. "Remember what we practised…Deep voice." "Yes." "Walk like a man." "Yes." "Don't touch your hair." "Exactly." "Don't smile, keep your face serious; men don't usually smile, unlike women." Mia laughed, knowing fully well that if there should be another name for Evelyn, it would be “smiling mistress.” "That one might be difficult." Evelyn rolled her eyes. They both laughed before stepping out of the car. The moment her shoes touched the ground, her nervousness returned. A housekeeper approached them on sighting the new visitors. "Name?" He asked. Evelyn cleared her throat. "Ethan Miller." The housekeeper looked at the identification card before looking at Evelyn again. "Chef position?" "Yes." "Come with me." Evelyn followed quietly. Every step toward the mansion made her heart beat faster. She had no idea that somewhere inside that enormous house was the man she had once loved. She had no idea that the man she was about to meet had spent six years believing his wife was dead; she certainly had no idea that the moment he saw her, something buried deep inside him would stir. --- Damian Hargrove stood in his private study, staring through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He had just finished a business call when someone knocked. "Come in." The door opened. He turned his head slightly. "Sir, the new chef has arrived." Damian glanced at the man standing beside the housekeeper. "Ethan Miller?" "Yes, sir." Damian's gaze settled on Evelyn. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Something about the young man bothered him. He couldn't explain exactly; the face was a bit familiar, the dress was ordinary, and his expression was nervous but determined. Yet something about those eyes... Damian frowned. "Come closer." Evelyn obeyed like a little child, even though she was nervous and her palms were already sweating. Damian studied her carefully. "Why do you want this job?" Evelyn lowered her gaze. "My family needs the money." "What family?" She stayed silent for a while before she finally replied. "My son." Damian's expression changed slightly. "You have a son?" Evelyn immediately realised her mistake. She had forgotten that Ethan was supposed to be unmarried. "He's... my nephew." Damian's eyes narrowed. "Your nephew?" "Yes." There was a pause. "Interesting." He said sharply. Evelyn's heart pounded as she couldn't understand what he meant by interesting. “Did he find out I'm lying?” she thought to herself. She could feel his gaze examining her. Then Damian stood and walked toward her. Evelyn instinctively stepped backwards. Damian stopped; for some inexplicable reason, standing this close to the stranger made his chest tighten. He had met thousands of people. He had interviewed hundreds of employees. Yet this particular person unsettled him. His eyes remained fixed on Evelyn. "You're hired." Evelyn blinked. "What?" "You heard me." "But you haven't tasted my food." "I'll decide whether you're worth keeping after dinner." He turned away, then paused. "One more thing." Evelyn looked up. "Yes, sir?" "Everyone in this house follows my rules." His voice was cold and serious. "Break them, and you're out." Evelyn nodded quickly. "Understood." Damian walked away. Evelyn released the breath she hadn't realised she was holding. She had done it; she had gotten the job. She felt like screaming at the top of her voice. “ No, I can't do this here,” she said hurriedly, controlling her excitement. She had no idea that the man who had just hired her was the same man whose face had once been the last thing she saw before her life disappeared, and Damian, as well, had no idea that th e man standing in front of him was the wife he had mourned for six years. The past had finally returned, simply wearing a man's clothes.
