1. Late, Again
Danica rushed into the building, huffing and puffing late on the first day of school. She was continuing her education and her running streak of always running late. "You're late." A very familiar voice of her ever so annoying brother and the future Alpha whispered into her ear startling her. Danica had been around Werewolves all her life, yet they still were able to make her jump. "And you're not?" Danica asked, gathering herself. "'Course not," he shrugged, throwing an arm over her shoulder and steering her to her form room. "Of course not," Danica rolled her eyes. "You're the freaking future Alpha and I'm just a mare human you're all stuck with." In an elite school for the magically gifted majority being werewolves and the odd witch here and there. Danica always felt like she stuck out like a sore thumb even at school where there were some humans, but she was the only none shifting werewolf. She could've avoided all this and went to a normal college instead she chose, well was coerced into remaining at the school and going off into post-16 education surrounded by everything she was not. It was no secret Danica was adopted by the current Alpha himself and his wife, fourteen years ago during the fall and reformation of the pack. Since the age of three the Alpha and his wife have been her parental figures ever since she can remember. "Dani, is that bitterness I hear in your voice?" The future Alpha, Chris questioned. Danica stopped turning to face Chris. "You know that's what everyone thinks, everyone has asked at one point 'why am I even here considering I'm not a wolf or even a mate of one and not only that, I'm definitely late to form and going to get detention first day back." Chris nodded. "If they have a problem, they should take it up with me first then we'll see where they're standing." He gritted out, he hated it when anyone would say anything against Danica, he knew without a doubt whoever he ended up with would have to accept Danica whole heartedly. "Don't worry, you won't be getting detention." He winked at her them pulled her to her form room. Chris knocked on the door, before entering, He scanned the room before his eyes landed on the teacher. "Mr. Allen," Chris greeted the man with a nod. Danica followed behind Chris, Mr. Allen had stopped taking the register and had his eyes on his future Alpha giving him his undivided attention as well as the rest of the class. People like Chris demanded attention with their presence without having to say much. Danica rolled her eyes noticing the girls had gained a dreamy eyed look, while the boys sat up straight with their heads held high.  Chris took a whiff of the room, picking up an unfamiliar scent of a wolf which belonged to the new assistant teacher who was being surrounded by a group of drooling teenage werewolves. Christopher's gaze bore down on the assistant teacher as he spoke. "Danica was with me, sorry for any inconveniences caused." MR. Allen's attention travelled to Danica briefly before it was back to Chris. "Nonsense, it's fine." He brushed off. "Thanks bro," Danica said, strutting off to an empty chair by the window, she ignored the stares she was getting from her classmates. It was something she was used to, yet it sometimes still unnerved her. "Dani" James greeted her using the same old nickname she was given since she could remember, no matter how hard she tried to get rid of it, it was still better than being called Nic. "Why were you really late?" "I overslept." Danica said sheepishly. "So did Chris." "Of course!" James rolled his eyes. "Don't you always?" "Not always," she nudged him off the table just as the first period bell rand. She could feel someone was watching her, ignoring the sensation she pulled James off the floor. "Wow, you're strong for a human." James said in awe as she dragged him out the room. "Of course, I am, I'm Danica Raul." She told him sticking out her tongue. "So, what do you have first?" She asked talking a look at her timetable. "Dani!" Her best friend yelled her name from down the hall. Danica turned to find the grinning girl running up towards her. "You're back!" Danica exclaimed in excitement as the girls hugged. She took a good look at her friend who now had a golden sun skilled tan, her skin darker than usual, warmer and glowing. "Ave, you've got to tell me everything, leave out no detail." "Don't worry you're going to find out every little detail about my holiday in the Bahamas and I mean every little detail." Avery voice dropped emphasising the hidden meaning behinds her words. The two girls squealed in excitement which was cut short but the interruption of Mr. Carter who was on his first rounds of monitoring the halls. First day back and there were no doubt students would be trying to ditch class. "Get to class, ladies." He barked. The girls looked around to find the halls empty, everyone had gone to class or found their new sleep hole for the next year. "Yes, sir." They both muttered taking their leave and heading towards their first class which they were late for. Danica and Avery stumbled into class, tripping over each other's feet grabbing everyone's attention including Mr. Holloway's. "Late already," Mr Holloway tut. "I see your both keeping up last year's traditions. I must say this is a new record for even you two." "What can I say, Mr. Holloway?" Avery shrugged. "We take pride in what we achieve, Mr Holloway." Danica chimed in curtsying along with Avery. There was a whistle of encouragement emitting from the centre of the classroom, where James was tucked away. He caught their attentions sending a wink their way. "Take your seats, class has started," Mr. Holloway barked. "Detention for cheek and you, James can join them as well." No one ever took Mr. Holloways detentions seriously he wanted to be out of the building faster than the students and it was a well-known fact throughout the school. The entire student body knew. Settling in her seat, she leaned over to James whispering, "You ditched me in the corridor." "I did not," he protested. "Ave, was there when I left. To be precise I left when the two of you started squealing my sensitive hearing couldn't handle it." He joked. "Sensitive, my butt." She muttered under her breath. "Heard that." "Might, I remind you class, my sensitive hearing can hear everything." My Holloway announced starring the duo down. The lunch bell rang signalling they were halfway through the day. The students poured out into the hallways meeting a greeting their friend. Danica squeezed through the crowds meeting up with James and Avery who somehow had managed to pass her and were already at the double doors leading to the small hall where the sixth formers ate lunch. "Danica, guess what?" Avery jumped in excitement as they walked over to the hot meal line queuing up. "What?" "There's a new P.E. teacher and apparently he's hot." "Really, how hot? Double take hot or just a once over hot?" "Definitely a double take, maybe even worth a triple take." "You're on about the teacher in form?" James said with distaste. "The fit teacher's in your form and you don't tell me!" Avery turned to Danica accusingly. "Ow, Ave why are you hitting me?" "For not telling me," she said as if it was the obvious thing in the world. "I didn't even notice to be honest, I was late-" "-and he was surrounded by werewolves drooling over him." James added moving down the queue. Danica placed her order and the Lunch lady handed over her burger and chips. Danica moved down the line and got a couple of packets of ketchup and water bottles. They made their way over to their usual table it was always empty farthest from the door they took their respective seats. "Oi, that's mine!" Danica exclaimed snatching the burger out of his hand, she starred at him the burger in hers which he had already managed to take a large bite out of. She narrowed her eyes just as her foot met his shin. James let out a string of curses. "Language Mr. Sullivan," Mrs O'Donoghue warned. Danica smiled at James like a Cheshire cat who had gotten all the cream before biting into her burger. The trio caught each other up on what they had missed out during the summer. "Damn," James said wistfully after listening to Avery's story of her summer.  Dropping his napkin onto his tray, he leaned back. "Babes from the Bahamas," James beamed just at the thought of them. "Man, I hope my mates from the Bahamas, just imagine those tanned legs wrapped around my waist." He let out a wolf whistle. Danica felt the uncomfortable feeling of being watched wash over her, causing her to shift in her seat, uncomfortably. "James, Honey, you're drooling," Danica informed trying to ignore the strange sensation. Avery let out a soft laugh. James smiled sweetly at her, mischief flashed in his eyes, throwing ketchup covered chips at her. "James," Danica growled wiping the sauce off her, "It's all over my face and now I'm going to smell of ketchup for the rest of the day. "Thanks, I really needed eau de ketchup over my perfume." "No problem Dani, allow me to help." He said as he moved towards her and took the empty seat beside her. He licked the ketchup off her cheek, "there a; done," he said looking back at his handy work. At that moment a growl emitted throughout the hall from all direction causing the lunch hall to fall to a silence, the students turned trying to pinpoint its location, but it wasn't possible. Everyone knew what that growl meant, it was a warning, a threat everyone understood and abode by. Danica scanned the room one last time before turning to face James who remained seated grinning at her. "You ate all my chips and then lucked me. That's freaking gross." "no, it's not," James bopped her nose. "It's affectionate." He slung an arm over her shoulder and the other over Avery's as they put the trays away. "Coming from you, it really isn't," Avery said as they both slipped out from under his arms. "Girls, you can't hate this." He said smugly gesturing towards his body, Danica eyes I'm knowing he was right, he had a body everyone would die for, girls walking by shamelessly eyed him and giggled like school children when he winked noticing them. "You-" Danica began only to be cut off by the bell signalling the end of lunch. "Dani," Chris called out as he approached the trio. He had a tail on him a few feet back was some of the students following him. Kiss asses as Danica liked to put it. As the soon to be Alpha of the pack, many have been kissing up to him, trying to get closer in attempts to be on good terms with the new alpha. It was happening more and more; they people were doing little to nothing in being discreet with their intentions as the days to his ceremony were ticking down. "You better get going to afternoon registration we don't want you late again." Danica remained silent only to narrow her eyes playfully as if to accept the challenge of being late. Chris greeted Avery who managed to greet him back, calm and collective. She had a crush on Chris ever since Avery and her family had joined the pack five years ago. "Nice seeing you too, Chris and all you kiss asses too." That remark earned James many dirty looks from the group but laughter from his friends. "But we got to go, we need to get Dani to form before she's really late." He said pulling Danica along. Danica let out a yelp at the sudden pull, "see you later Chris," she said as she left. "You do know you didn't have to drag me along you know I would have just asked." "Yeah I knew but where's the fun in that?" They entered the classroom just as the final bell rang.
