Chapter 1: Dreams
The little girl with chestnut hair color is nesting in the lap of the Woman with gorgeous eyes. The maid beside her occasionally flicked the propeller at the Woman's request. It wasn't until she saw her daughter fast asleep in her arms that the Woman motioned for the maid to stop her work and take the girl back to her room. The Woman stood up and was about to step into the tub; when a loud banging on the door sounded from below.
The maid understood what she meant and quickly ran down. After a while, the maid didn't come back. The Woman wearing the robe that had just taken off, holding the comb in her hand on the dressing table, slowly walked out of the room. Before she left, she still had time to glance at her young daughter sleeping in a pink duvet. Her mouth twisted into a smile, "Violet, sleep well."
She buried the paper with the address inside the little girl's pocket. She used all her strength to carry her daughter into the small cellar, where she used to play hide and seek with her daughter. After doing everything, the Woman left the door half-closed and strolled down the stairs.
In the stillness, despite her efforts, her every beat was denounced by the creak of the stairs. In the room on the 1st floor, the maid had turned into a dry corpse in the middle of the door. Maybe because she is so used to this image, the Woman is not too surprised. The man covered his head with long straight legs crossed over each other and around him, long lines of servants were waiting. The Woman sat next to the man, and he pushed a glass of red wine in front of her.
One side is waiting, and the other is not acting. Heavy time passed with the man's footsteps, "Get her out here."
From start to finish, the Woman didn't say a word. Suddenly, she reached out to remove the hat on the man's head when a sharp claw pierced her body. In the blink of an eye, blood drained. And the dry skeleton with the expensive cloak fell to the floor. The man gathered his hand and shook his head, "Not this taste. Find her daughter. Just in around here."
The thumping and ferocious threats echoed around every corner. Inside the darkened basement, the girl turned slightly and continued to sleep. Suddenly, a set of sharp claws slammed into the cellar, causing Violet to panic, scream, and jump up. Sweat dripped off part of the back of her shirt, but not as much as Violet's fear.
She whispered, "It's this dream again. How many years has it been?"
Each time Violet woke up and lit the lamp at the head of the bed. She tucked her maroon hair back, stood up, and opened her room window. Immediately she panicked and screamed, "Oh my god. Aunt Sophia will kill me."
Violet hurriedly washed her face and walked down the stairs. Aunt Sophi's voice instantly scared Violet so much that she nearly fell off the rickety staircase, "You dare to sleep again, Violet. Where's my breakfast, my child's lunch? I'm sure I'll have to get you a decent job before you tear my house apart,"
"I'm so sorry, Aunt Sophia. I was engrossed in fixing Vivian's uniform last night, so I slept late," Violet said in a small voice.
But Aunt Sophia hadn't made such an easy compromise. She knocked on each child's door and yelled at them that it was late for school. Of course, she wouldn't forget Violet. As a result, this morning, she had to wash all the blankets in the house even though she had washed them just last week.
Aunt Sophia is an employee of a financial company. In the morning, she usually leaves the house at 7:30 am and returns in time for lunch. Sometimes Violet wished she had stayed at work all day to have more time to rest. Aunt Sophia's husband was a thin man with a face full of decay. He had a fear of his wife, and his main job was as a postman. Aunt Sophia had two children; the eldest was named Vivian – a tall, thin girl with a long, fast face. The child's name is Amber – a round fat son who loves to eat food cooked by Violet.
In the morning, in the cramped house, there are often sounds of cursing and squealing. At most, Aunt Sophia said, and Vivian always cried. Violet prepares a pot of soup, rice, and some smoked ham, and Vivian and Amber's lunch will be rewarded with two extra big fried sausages. After Aunt Sophia had picked up her frayed leather briefcase and put the two children in the car, Violet had already prepared two portions of lunch and placed them in the car's back seat. Before going to work, Aunt Sophia remembered to threaten Violet about washing up the blankets early. If it rains and they can't dry. Aunt Sophia would not feed Violet rice for two days.
As usual, the old car buzzed two or three times before it started to leave. Uncle Rame tried to eat the last piece of soup in the pot, climbed onto the motorcycle, and went with a few letters inside the bag. Violet tiredly walked into the house and closed the door. She looked at the last bit of white rice in the pot with the bowls tossed around on the table, sighing.
Violet had so much to do during the day that she couldn't get herself hungry. She scooped up every grain of rice in the pot with a spoon and cleaned everything on the table. Violet took all the blankets and tried to wash them as quickly as possible. This afternoon she will participate in Priest Josep Bucki's closing ceremony. Aunt Sophia accepted Violet to Josep Bucki's church to study culture every afternoon because it was free. And at the end of the month, the reward for Violet's first in the class is 5kg of rice and 1 kg of venison.
Aunt Sophia will be back in 1 hour. Violet sighed, finished washing the blankets, and returned to the kitchen to prepare lunch. Violet's stomach churned, breakfast eating so little that Violet lacked energy. But Aunt Sophia had already divided up enough food for each meal so Violet couldn't eat anything. Violet turned off the stove and walked quickly to the back garden. Only a few tomatoes and a handful of wild vegetables remained. Violet took two fig tomatoes into her mouth, took a handful of wild vegetables, and walked back into the kitchen.
This house, Aunt Sophia's was inherited from her grandmother. It is located at the end of Ringe Street in the town of Zoci. Next door to Aunt Sophia's house was Antoni's house, a strange man with brown eyes. Occasionally, Mr. Antoni would give Violet some bread with butter. And the condition was that Violet was forced to sit and listen to him talk about his son, who had died a long time ago. Sometimes he would ask about Violet's parents and whisper in her ear that Aunt Sophia was a stupid woman.
That afternoon, Aunt Sophia returned with a fat woman. While Violet put the food on the table, she would stare at Violet appraisingly. Then, without hesitation, she said to Aunt Sophia, "Big hips, easy to give birth to, and Mr. Vango will enjoy this,"
Aunt Sophia laughed with great satisfaction, "She can work hard. If Mr. Vango takes her, he won't need to hire more servants!"
"It's not possible," said the disgruntled Woman. "Vango's nearly 10-hectare grape and potato farm need daily workers. And that's why he's been a sought-after object for ladies for many years. Your granddaughter must be lucky."
After saying that, the Woman did not stop shoveling the delicious beef soup into her bowl, and feeling like it wasn't enough, she picked up the spoon and scooped herself a bowl full of buds. Aunt Sophia added a few more words that made the Woman comfortably eat most of the food Violet had been preparing all morning. The satisfied Woman left after she had finished all the food on the table.
"She's talking about Mr. Vango?" Violet cleared the table and asked Aunt Sophia.
Aunt Sophia looked directly at Violet for the first time and said kindly, "That's right. And he's getting married,"
Violet was surprised, "Is there someone else who will marry him?"
"Why not?" Aunt Sophia said grimly. "He has money and a large farm to feed his wife for an idle life; who doesn't want to?"
Violet scoffed, "I've heard Antoni tell many stories about Vango. And the reason his three previous wives died. No one in this town will marry him."
"It's Antoni again," Aunt Sophia grumbled. "He just sat at home and listened to other people tell him. He doesn’t know anything. Mr. Vango has agreed to marry you; later this month, he will take the wedding ceremony to take you to his house,"
Ouch.
The plate in Violet's hand fell to the floor and shattered. Aunt Sophi shouted, "I will cut your dinner, and don't expect to touch any leftovers today,"
Violet no longer cared what she was going to eat tonight. Her brain just spun with Aunt Sophia's earlier words. Mr. Vango had agreed to marry you, which meant they were talking about her. Violet couldn't help but kneel on the floor; the plate shard slammed into her knee, causing blood to drip out and spread all over.
"I'm not going to marry him," Violet said seriously.
Aunt Sophia said softly to Violet, "You will be the landowner's wife. Wow, what do you wish for, little Violet?"
Violet kept shaking her head, "He's a demon; I will die if I go to his home. May Aunt Sophia,"
"No, Violet. Later this month, he will bring money, and you will become his wife. During that time, you were not allowed to leave this town. If you dare to run away, I will remove your name from the clan, and you will become an unprotected child."
Aunt Sophia leaves, leaving Violet with extreme fear. She sat down on the floor and was filled with panic in her lap.
