Donald Forbes had reason to feel reasonably optimistic after speaking to Sir Robert Blake. The fact that Blake had agreed to involve Special Branch in the investigation into Douglas Ryan’s activities mean that the peer agreed to some extent with Forbes and Trent. Special Branch, after all, was the division of the Metropolitan Police tasked with the protection of national security, offences against the Official Secrets Act, and close protection of public figures such as the Royal Family and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
