Chapter 44Hiroshi swam toward the bobbing lump he hoped was Takamatsu. Hiroshi had tried to gauge the distance before he dove in, but the water was icy cold and a longer drop from the dock than he imagined. The water smacked him with cold force and he swallowed a mouthful of saltwater. He spit it out and started chopping through the waves toward Takamatsu. His clothes pulled on him, but he relaxed into his stroke and plunged forward, keeping his eyes on the floating body he’d glimpsed from shore. He saw Takamatsu’s head flailing above the surface, unable to tell how far, and doubled his pace. He sped up for as long as he could before pulling up and treading water to look again, but in the dark he could see nothing but water. He wasn’t even sure he was heading in the right direction. He
