Chapter 43As they sped toward the docks, Sakaguchi called Takamatsu every few minutes, to no answer. He called Ueno, but there was no answer from him, either. Osaki gunned the car through the city side of Shinagawa, past office buildings connected by flyover sidewalks—the nexus for another side of Japan’s new economy. Nearer the bay, the roads widened and fenced-off lots held rusting shipping containers stacked like half-finished towers. Along the water, ship-to-shore cranes jutted into the dark sky like giant spiders waiting motionless for the next arrival.
