Chapter 1
"Young Master, please come back with us. Your father is critically ill; your brother is in prison. Only you can support the Watson family now." On Pine Street in Rainford City, Adrian Watson was carrying a cheap gift box when the old butler blocked his path. "Young Master, your grandmother has prepared a grand welcome for your return," the butler said. "She's offering you shares in the oil company." "Rights to develop twelve rare mineral veins." "And the black iron ring; the ring only worn by the heir of the Watson family." The butler took out a black ring that glowed faintly. "Wear it, and you become the sole heir of the Watson family. You will inherit all the family's assets, worth 100 billion dollars! Adrian slapped the ring out of the butler's hand, his expression indifferent. "Ever since I was a child, I’ve never been good at sweet-talk, so I could never win my grandmother's favor. However, my brother has always been deeply cherished. Afraid I would take his place as heir, she kicked me out of the Watson family." "It’s been three years since I married into the Taylor family, and I have endured endless humiliation. In all this time, when has the Watson family ever shown me the slightest bit of concern? She forced me out, and now, she wants me back at her command? Does she think I'm a dog? I just want to be a nobody. I don't care about the 100 billion in wealth." Adrian strode away, leaving the butler and his entourage staring at each other in disbelief. The Taylor family was regarded as a second-tier family in Rainford City. Three years ago, when Adrian was on his last legs, Mr. Taylor, the patriarch of the Taylor family, arranged for his granddaughter, Sabrina Taylor, to marry him. At that time, news of the wedding shocked the entire city. The reason for the commotion was that Sabrina, well-known in most circles, marrying an unknown loser like Adrian, instantly made her the laughingstock of Rainford City. Only Mr. Taylor knew Adrian's true identity. However, two months after the wedding, Mr. Taylor passed away due to illness. Since then, Adrian's reputation as a useless son-in-law became firmly established. For three years, Adrian endured endless ridicule and cold stares. But these were nothing but trivial matters; being kicked out of the Watson family hurt even more. Today was the birthday of Mrs. Taylor, the matriarch of the Taylor family. Adrian had carefully chosen a rather cheap gift for he was too poor to afford anything expensive. The gift was destined to be mocked by the Taylor family. As for the Watson family asking him to return and inherit the fortune, Adrian found it laughable. His brother might be great at pleasing their grandmother, but he was arrogant and led a life of debauchery. Trouble was inevitable for him. Maybe the Watson family was doomed to downfall. But Adrian didn't care about any of that. He was determined to sever all ties with the Watson family! Back at the Taylor family’s villa, a beautiful figure stood anxiously at the door, her eyes searching the surroundings. It was Sabrina, a very beautiful woman, and Adrian's wife. Because she was so outstanding, their wedding three years ago had become a joke. Adrian jogged up to Sabrina, "Sabrina, who are you waiting for?" Sabrina looked at Adrian with disdain, seemingly annoyed by his mere presence, "Did you prepare the gift for Grandma?" Adrian raised the gift box in his hand, "Yes, I picked it out carefully." Sabrina didn't even glance at it. Three years ago, she had no idea why her grandfather had insisted on her marrying a loser like Adrian. Even more puzzling was that before he passed away, her grandfather had told her not to underestimate Adrian. She still couldn't fathom what did her grandfather see in him? If it weren’t for the fact that she cared deeply about her family’s reputation, she would have divorced him long ago. "Don't say anything inappropriate later. All our relatives will be here today, and they will surely mock you. Just endure it. I don't want to be embarrassed because of you," Sabrina reminded him. Adrian nodded indifferently. When they entered the living room, nearly all members of the Taylor family were already there, and the atmosphere was lively. "Sabrina, you're finally here." "It's Grandma's birthday today, why are you so late?" They all greeted Sabrina warmly, completely ignoring Adrian. "Hey, loser, is that shabby box Grandma's birthday present?" James Taylor, Sabrina's cousin, always gave Adrian a hard time every time they met. "Yes," Adrian nodded expressionlessly. James sneered, "That thing looks like garbage. How can you even think of giving it to Grandma? Look at what I got her, a diamond necklace designed by the famous Ms. Lucas!" James lit a cigar with a smug look and flicked the ash onto Adrian. "This necklace has ninety-nine diamonds. Any one of them is worth more than your life. What do you think, loser?" As soon as James finished speaking, the living room erupted into loud, mocking laughter. "Enough, James! Your money has nothing to do with us. There’s no need to show off!" Sabrina said, clearly annoyed. "Show off? How ridiculous! Do I need to show off in front of a loser?" James pointed at Adrian aggressively, "Giving Grandma this trash for her birthday clearly shows you don't respect her!" "You!" Sabrina's face turned red. Her branch of the family was the poorest among the Taylors. They couldn't afford gifts worth several hundred thousand dollars. At that moment, Adrian walked over to James and examined the diamond necklace in his hand. "What are you doing? This is Grandma's gift. Do you think a loser like you can touch it?" James shouted angrily. Adrian calmly said, "I just wanted to tell you that Ms. Lucas immigrated five years ago. Before she left, she announced to the media that she wouldn't design jewelry for anyone anymore. This necklace is fake." As soon as he finished speaking, the entire villa fell silent. "You're just spouting nonsense!" James, embarrassed and enraged, threw a punch at Adrian. Adrian dodged it effortlessly, causing James to stumble and fall embarrassingly. “You're nothing but a useless waste! Stop pretending you know anything!” Someone shouted as they helped James up while glaring angrily at Adrian. “What’s all the noise about?” A frail voice came through as the old matriarch, leaning on her cane, walked in. The Taylor family members stood up in unison and bowed to her. Since Mr. Taylor had passed away, Mrs. Taylor had taken over the family's affairs, and no decision, big or small, was made without her consent. Her authority was absolute. “Grandma, James has brought you a diamond necklace. Could you check if it’s real?” Sabrina spoke impulsively, somehow believing Adrian’s claim. James’s face turned pale. Others might not see if the necklace was genuine, but his grandmother was an expert in jewelry and would surely find out. “Is that so? Let me have a look,” the old matriarch said. James gritted his teeth and handed over the necklace. Sabrina, wanting to give Adrian some credit, quickly added, “It was Adrian who noticed it.” The old matriarch examined the necklace, her face growing stern. James's breath quickened, his anxiety and fear mounting. Smack! Without warning, the old matriarch slapped Adrian, “This is obviously real! Why would you slander James?”
