Chapter 12

I did just that. I didn’t say a word for at least two or three or more hours. I could feel Jackson's eyes on me occasionally, but he had remained quiet as well. For the first time in a long time, I saw lights up ahead. Maybe a town that I could possibly get help in. It was a slim chance, but it was a chance. As we got closer, I realized how slim of a chance it really was. In fact, it was only a small, miniscule gas station. It looked like one of those types of gas stations you would see in horror movies. This was not my chance. Jackson slowed down and pulled in. Of course, he wouldn’t fear a place like this. In fact, I was pretty sure he was Satan and I had been sold into an eternity of hell. Jackson parked in front of the single pump and turned the truck off. He turned and looked at me, placing his arm behind me on the seat. “We need gas and to stretch a little bit. Let me make this clear. Crystal clear. If you run or cause any type of scene other than a happy newlywed, I will kill you. I have no problem doing so, and I won’t lose sleep over it. The choice is yours.” He didn’t wait for my response. He jumped out of the truck and started pumping gas. I could see it on his face, he was confident of the decision I would make, and he was right. I climbed out of the truck cab and stretched. My whole body ached from sitting like a statue for so long. I had begun to ache all over about an hour before. I still held firm, scared if I even took a breath the wrong way our bodies would touch. I wanted no part of that. I walked around the truck to wait to see if we would be going inside. I avoided his gaze and he laughed at my rebellion. “Go ahead Sam, get it out of your system now. We are almost home and there will be no place for defiance there.” I still refused to look at him, but as I spoke my voice was scratchy. “Why did you do this? What do you want from me? I just don’t understand.” I had so many questions. Right now, these were at the forefront of my mind. I felt more than saw him hang up the pump and walk toward me. He brushed my hair back away from the side of my face. I froze. The action didn’t feel as sweet as it appeared from the outside. He leaned in and kissed the spot right behind my ear. I closed my eyes as if the action would make it go away. It wasn’t a quick kiss. It was a kiss, more like he was trying to devour me and not put me at ease. The fear worsened but I didn’t move. I refused to let it show. He wouldn’t get that from me. Never. I made a vow right then and there to myself.
