I stared out the windshield until the road finally lulled me to sleep. The rage had left, leaving exhaustion in its place. We had been on the road for hours before sleep took over. My mind had so many questions but couldn’t hold on to a single one at that moment.
I had never raised my voice before. I had never felt that level of rage. I for sure had never hit anyone before today. I wasn’t proud of myself, but I didn’t regret it at all.
I don’t know how long I slept. It was a fitful sleep. When I woke up, I jerked my head up sharply realizing I had been resting on Jackson's shoulder. He hadn’t spoken since we left, and I was OK with that for the moment. I didn’t want to talk to my buyer. Being totally transparent, I was terrified. I had no idea what was in store for me at that point. I had already felt the evil this man beside me possessed. Why did he buy me? Where did he even see me? My father had said Jackson had seen me in several towns before. In my still groggy state, I tried to replay every minute of that town.
It wasn’t much of a town. A small mountain town. It definitely wasn’t a city by any means. A diner, two stores, a library, and I think maybe a small gas station. People didn’t get out a lot or socialize, as I saw. I didn’t know if they even had a school. We weren’t there long enough to even think about school. Oh, yeah, I forgot the bar my father basically lived at while we were there. There wasn’t even a hotel or motel. We had rented a room from an elderly couple. The husband was working on the trailer that we pulled behind the car.
I had walked to the diner a couple of times for food. I had walked to the library often, but there was never anyone else there. I knew I would just eventually have to ask because I was not going to be able to figure it out. Just not tonight. It was dark, and I really hoped we didn’t have to travel much further. My mouth was extremely dry, and I hadn’t eaten at all. I wouldn’t express my needs. I would remain quiet and wait.
