Chapter 4

“I’m not worried about you sweetie. You will be amazing. I already know it. We just had the pleasure of getting a new teacher at our school, and he has kindly agreed to be a mentor as well. What that means is that he will show you around and be available to help you adjust or answer any questions you may have. He is very kind and smart. Just between us girls, he isn’t bad on the eyes either.” She giggled a little. “His name is Jackson VanMeter. I have let him know you were arriving today, and he should be here any minute.” As if on cue a male voice came from behind me. “Good morning, ladies.” It was like velvet had washed over my skin. So smooth and masculine. How did a simple sentence completely warm me up? A blur brushed past me and reached over the desk to shake Mrs. Jassy’s hand. I could only see his back, but it was broad, strong. I could tell this was not a man that would let anyone, or anything control him. Not like my father. As all these non-virginal thoughts were running through my brain at lightening speed, I failed to notice that he had turned to face me. He was looking at me in the way that suggested he was waiting for me to answer him. What had he said? I figured the safe thing to say was “Hello.” I spoke so softly; I was unsure if he had heard me or not. I raised my eyes a little to meet his gaze. A smile spread across his face. His green eyes lit up in a way that gave me the impression he wasn’t a good boy, Mrs. Jassy thought he was. He was young, probably fresh out of college. His dark brown hair was wavy but cut short just above his ears. His smile was bright enough to melt the icebergs in Antarctica but once again held just enough of a sensual vibe to melt a woman just as fast. “Hello, Sam. Welcome to Cannon High.” Why did it sound almost like a threat? He slowly, animalistically held out his hand to me. I placed my hand in his, barely touching his skin. Slightly afraid it might burn my skin. His fingers wrapped around mine. His grip was very firm, almost painful, but his hands were smooth. I stood up as Mrs. Jassy smiled at me. “You will be with Mr. VanMeter for the rest of the day. He will show you around and go over the handbook with you. Once again, we are very happy you are here with us. Don’t be afraid to hunt me down if you need anything. I hope you really like it here, Samantha.”
