I cast my eyes down embarrassed for the first time.
“I will get your chair wet mam.” My voice came out in the quietest of whispers. I guess you could say I have not found my full voice yet. Quickly she jumped up and came around the desk again. She took me by the shoulders and gently sat me down.
“I don’t care about that old chair. Besides, how are we supposed to have a good talk if I am looking up at you?”
I smiled my thanks at her once again and relaxed a little in the seat. I was still gripping the shawl for warmth, but the day was already looking better.
“I have your schedule right here and your locker number. I am sure you will not have much trouble catching up. I have your transcripts from your last school, and you are an extremely smart girl. We are lucky to have you here.”
Lucky to have me? Was she serious. No one had ever said that to me. Not ever!
“Thank you, Mrs. Jassy. I try hard. I love to read, so that probably helps me a lot. I get kind of nervous when I drop below a 4.0.”
I shocked myself by blurting that out. I do not remember the last time I had an actual conversation. Mrs. Jassy made it very easy. I wanted to talk to her. She had a loving voice that was like music to my ears. She smiled kindly at me.
