Chapter 6

There was the heat washing over my body again. He smelled so good. It was taking every ounce of my strength to not lean in closer. “Do you want to get out of here? Leave and never come back. We could go anywhere you want. Do anything you want.” He was whispering, but I could hear every word like he was shouting in my ear. Jackson didn’t resist the urge to lean in. He was so close I felt dizzy and confused. I had to get out of this situation. Although almost every part of me wanted to just give in, I knew this was wrong and the rational part of my brain took over and stepped back quickly, catching him off guard enough to get away from his grip. “I am pretty sure that is against the rules you are supposed to tell me about,” I said jokingly. Trying to play down the situation he created. There was the smile. Please no, not the smile. I took another step back. I needed space. I needed fresh air. I got neither. As he straightened up, the smile didn’t leave. “Do not ever say I didn’t give you a chance. Follow me.” Jackson was already walking down another dark corridor as he said the last sentence. What was that supposed to mean? This was the thought racing through my head, but I didn’t get caught up in it. I hurried to follow him. We walked for a good bit in silence. I decided to finally pay attention to my surroundings, so I wouldn’t get lost tomorrow. The school was beautiful. He was correct. It was dark back in the back hallway but beautiful nonetheless. I wish I had known then that would be the last time I saw the school. I was sure I would have loved it if given the chance to. I never even got to meet the other kids. I never got the tour. I never got to meet my teachers. My last hours of peace were spent sitting in his classroom answering questions about myself. Questions no teacher should ever ask their students. The bell rang signaling lunchtime, according to Jackson, and he led me out a backdoor of the school and to his truck that was parked alone in the rear of the school. As soon as he roughly shoved me into the truck through the driver-side door, I knew my life was about to change forever. That gut feeling that just can’t be ignored was present and screaming for attention. I tried to move over as close to the passenger side door as I could, but he grabbed me by the upper arm and drug me back across the truck cab next to him. No words were exchanged, no scream came from my mouth. Even then, I knew it wouldn’t help. Even then, I knew there was no escape, and he was my fate. As much as I knew, there was so much more that I didn’t. So much more that I could’ve never even imagined.
