Chapter 1 Don't Get the Wrong Idea
On a rainy night, Quinn Monroe hurried home through the pouring rain.
When Quinn opened the door, she saw a woman quickly scramble off Liam Nathaniel's lap. That woman was none other than Liam's first love, Sansa Green.
Recently, Sansa's husband had died in a car accident. Pregnant, Sansa had been calling Liam constantly.
To Quinn's surprise, Liam had actually brought Sansa back.
Quinn stood there in shock, soaked through from the rain, her clothes clinging to her body, her hands and feet icy cold. She was frozen in place, unable to move.
Sansa quickly got up from Liam's lap, looking guilty. She lowered her head, feigning innocence and saying, "Quinn, please don't misunderstand. I just lost my balance and accidentally fell into Liam's lap..."
She touched her pregnant belly and continued, "My husband died recently, and I've been so sad. With the pregnancy, my body is weak..."
Liam frowned, his voice tinged with surprise. "Why are you back? Didn't I tell you to stay at the hospital and take care of my grandmother?"
Quinn let out a cold laugh, her head pounding, a ringing sound in her ears. She clenched her fists, struggling to suppress the fury building inside her.
"Liam, I've been taking care of your grandmother at the hospital as best as I can. It started raining, and I called you more than a dozen times to pick me up. You didn't answer a single call, and now you're here, getting cozy with your first love?"
Sansa immediately started crying, tears streaming down her face. "Quinn, it's all my fault. I had a stomachache tonight and was feeling very uncomfortable, so I called Liam. After he took me to the hospital, he thought it was too late and brought me back. I shouldn't have called him... I'm sorry..."
Her voice was delicate, tinged with sadness. "If my husband were still alive, I would never trouble Liam. I'm really unfortunate, becoming a widow at such a young age."
She cried pitifully, her tears falling in torrents.
Liam reached out to wipe Sansa's tears. "Sansa, you're pregnant now. Don't cry. It's not good for the baby. You should go upstairs; I've already arranged a room for you."
"But Quinn..."
"I'll handle it."
Sansa nodded obediently and went upstairs, leaving Liam and Quinn alone in the living room.
Quinn could barely hold back her tears, but she didn't want to cry in front of Liam. She turned and rushed to the bathroom. At that moment, she felt like a drowned rat.
As soon as she entered the bathroom, a pair of strong arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Liam rested his head on her shoulder, his voice soft and gentle, as if he were coaxing an injured rabbit.
"Quinn, don't be angry. Sansa has lost her husband. It's already tragic enough. Any help we can give is better than nothing."
"Has she lost her entire family?" Quinn retorted, her voice dripping with bitterness.
"Quinn, that's so mean. You've always been understanding. Why are you speaking so harshly about Sansa? She's my first love, but you're my girlfriend now. In a few days, we're getting married. Everyone has a past—why do you keep bringing it up? If you keep acting like this, I might start to dislike you!"
Quinn couldn't help but laugh in frustration. She yanked Liam's hand away and glared at him, her voice laced with anger. "Either she leaves, or I will."
"Quinn!" Liam's tone grew sharp and impatient.
But Quinn refused to back down. Seeing Liam stand there, she understood what that meant. She began packing her things.
Noticing this, Liam reached out and grabbed her arm. "Quinn! Do you have to embarrass us all?"
"Yes!"
"Fine..." Liam took a deep breath, released her, and turned to go upstairs.
Upstairs, Sansa, who had been watching from a distance, quickly retreated into her room. She sat on the sofa, her anxiousness hidden behind a calm facade.
Liam frowned as he approached her. "Sansa, let me take you home."
Sansa looked disappointed, biting her lip. "Is Quinn angry? I knew I was such a burden. I'm sorry, Liam. I should know I'm not needed."
"Sansa, don't say that. You're carrying my child; you're the most important person in my life. I'm just worried that Quinn might hurt you later."
Sansa nodded happily and followed Liam downstairs.
As they walked together, Liam held Sansa's hand tightly, clearly concerned that she might fall.
Watching them leave, Quinn felt a sharp pain in her heart, and tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Quinn waited on the sofa for a long time, eventually falling asleep from exhaustion, but still, Liam didn't return.
When she woke up, she was still alone in the living room. There was no sign of Liam in the bedroom.
‘Didn't Liam return after dropping Sansa off last night?'
Recalling the events of the previous night, Quinn felt a deep sadness wash over her.
With a soft "click", the door swung open, and Liam walked in, smiling. "So, you're awake."
He frowned immediately. "Why are you crying? Anything happened?"
Quinn reached up to wipe her tears, forcing a bitter laugh. "You look quite happy. You spent the night at Sansa's place, didn't you?"
"After I took Sansa home, she started feeling unwell again. I was worried, so I stayed to take care of her."
"Why are you so concerned about her? Is the baby yours?"
The question hit like a bomb, and Liam exploded. "Quinn, what are you thinking? Are you so bored that you have to create problems? There's nothing between Sansa and me!"
Liam's frustration was palpable as he poured himself a glass of water, trying to mask his unease. "It's really humiliating that you see me that way."
Quinn let out a cold laugh. "Liam, I think we should break up."
As her voice fell, Liam's expression twisted in fury. "Quinn Monroe, you dare bring it up? With your status, marrying a man like me is the best luck you'll ever have. Don't be so ungrateful! If anyone's going to propose a breakup, it should be me. You have no right!"
Quinn laughed bitterly. He was right. The Nathaniel family was a centuries-old prestigious family, always ranked at the top of the wealth list, capable of influencing the global economy with a snap of their fingers. Their wealth could last a lifetime. Moreover, Liam's brother was the president of Helmora.
Years ago, Liam had suffered a car accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. Sansa had abandoned him at that time and married someone else.
Quinn had admired Liam for years. She took care of him with all her heart, using her medical knowledge to heal him. The Nathaniel family was very touched by her dedication, which eventually led to their union.
In the face of Sansa's abandonment, Liam had turned his heart cold, and he reluctantly accepted Quinn. But no matter how hard Quinn worked to maintain this relationship, Liam always believed she was unworthy of him.
It turned out she would never be able to reach Liam's heart.
"You think I'm unworthy of you, anyway. Now that Sansa's husband is dead, you can just be with her after we break up!"
