Chapter 1: The Golden Cage
The rain in Chicago didn’t just fall; it pounded against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Cross Global Tower, mirroring the relentless pressure inside Elena’s chest. Across the mahogany desk sat Julian Cross—a man whose face was featured on every major business magazine, defined by sharp cheekbones, dark eyes, and a complete absence of warmth. "You're late, Miss Vance," Julian said, his voice smooth, deep, and devoid of emotion. He didn't look up from the leather-bound tablet in his hands. "The storm disrupted traffic," Elena replied, smoothing down her damp dress as she stepped further into the expansive office. She kept her chin high, refusing to let her trembling hands betray her. "Besides, I didn’t realize emergency meetings called at nine on a Sunday evening required strict punctuality." Julian set the tablet down and leaned back, locking his piercing gaze onto hers. "When it involves saving your family’s legacy from total liquidation by tomorrow morning, punctuality is the bare minimum." A cold shudder ran down Elena’s spine. It was true. Her father’s sudden illness had exposed years of mismanagement at Vance Logistics, leaving the firm millions in debt. By noon tomorrow, creditors would seize everything—including her childhood home—unless a miracle happened. And Julian Cross was no angel. He was a predator who smelled blood in the water. "Let's skip the small talk," Elena said, stepping closer to the desk. "Why am I here, Julian? If you wanted to buy Vance Logistics for pennies on the dollar, you could have done that through your attorneys." "Because I don't want your company, Elena," Julian said quietly. He pulled a sleek black folder from his drawer and slid it across the polished wood, stopping it right in front of her. "I want you." Elena froze, staring at the white document inside the open folder. At the top, printed in bold, unmistakable lettering, were the words: PRENUPTIAL AND MARRIAGE AGREEMENT. "Is this some kind of sick joke?" She looked from the document back to his face, looking for any sign of amusement. There was none. "My grandfather's trust stipulates that I must be married and settled by my thirty-second birthday to retain controlling interest in Cross Global," Julian explained, his tone as clinical as a medical report. "My birthday is in three weeks. The board is already plotting a takeover. I need a wife who is respectable, manageable, and bound by a contract tight enough that she can't betray me." "And you chose me?" Elena asked, incredulous. "We've barely spoken three times in our lives, and every time, we argued!" "Which makes you ideal," he countered, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk. "There are no feelings involved. No messy romance. You get thirty million dollars wired to Vance Logistics immediately upon signing, completely clearing your family's debt. In exchange, you play the devoted wife in public for exactly one year." Elena stared at the numbers listed on the contract. It was enough. It was more than enough to save her family and secure her father's medical care. But the price was giving up her freedom to the coldest man in the city. "And if I say no?" she whispered. Julian checked his gold wristwatch. "Then in fourteen hours, Vance Logistics goes bankrupt, your family assets are frozen, and you leave this office with nothing." He unscrewed a heavy fountain pen and placed it beside the paper. "The choice is yours, Elena. Sign, or walk out." Elena's breath hitched. She looked at the pen, then at the man watching her like a chess player waiting for a checkmate. She reached out, her fingers closing around the cool metal of the pen.
