Chapter 1:The boy in my dreams
My old, rusty alarm rang so loudly that I nearly fell off my bed. I groaned and blindly reached for it, knocking over the glass of water on my bedside table before finally finding the snooze button. Silence. For exactly five seconds. Then the alarm started ringing again. "Oh, come on!" I grabbed the alarm and switched it off completely before burying my face in my pillow. This happened almost every morning, so I was beginning to get used to it. The alarm was a gift from my best friend, Amy. Her real name was Amelia, but I had called her Amy for as long as I could remember. She claimed the alarm was supposed to help me become more responsible. It hadn't worked. If anything, I had become better at ignoring alarms. I finally forced myself out of bed and stretched. Oops. I almost forgot to introduce myself. My name is Kimberly Norman. I'm sixteen years old, a student at one of the most prestigious private schools in Los Angeles, and the only daughter of the Norman family. And, unfortunately for me, I'm also the only female heiress of the Norman Group. My father, Alexander Norman, was the CEO of the Norman Group, a company that had been in our family for generations. His name was known almost everywhere in Los Angeles. Which meant my family had money. A lot of money. I had an older brother, Jason, who was two years older than me. He was annoying, arrogant, and somehow managed to get on my nerves before breakfast every single day. But I loved him. Most of the time. I hurried into the bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror. My dark, silky hair was a complete mess. I looked like a witch who had just survived a hurricane. "Wow, Kimberly. Beautiful," I muttered sarcastically. I quickly took a shower, brushed my hair, got dressed in my school uniform, and grabbed my backpack. I glanced at the clock. 7:32 a.m. My eyes widened. "Oh no." I rushed downstairs. "Finally. Look who decided to wake up." Jason was sitting at the kitchen island, casually munching on a sandwich. I glared at him. "Good morning to you too." "Good morning, Sleeping Beauty." I ignored him, pulled out a chair, and sat down. "Jason, when is Dad coming back from China?" I asked while reaching for the ketchup. He raised an eyebrow. "Well, I thought you were Daddy's little princess. You should know that." "Duhhh. Are you jealous?" He scoffed. "Of you? Never." I gave him a knowing look. "Liar." Jason rolled his eyes. I had always been Dad's favorite. At least, that's what Jason believed. Dad loved both of us, but there was always something special about the relationship between him and me. I could call him at almost any time, and if I wanted something, I usually got it. I even had access to some of his credit cards. Jason had never been particularly happy about that. Luckily for him, Mom was always on his side. "Phew! Good morning, lovelies!" Mom walked into the kitchen looking sweaty from her morning jog. "Morning, Mom. You look ravishing today," Jason said with a wink. Mom laughed. "Thank you, my son." She sat beside us, grabbed a sandwich, and immediately started eating. "Slow down, Momma," I said, laughing. She looked at me. "I'm hungry." "You're always hungry after your morning jog." "Exactly." I smiled. For a moment, everything felt normal. Just another morning with my family. Then my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen. Amy. I checked the time. 7:40 a.m. My eyes widened. "Holy s**t! I'm so late!" Jason burst out laughing. "You just realized?" "Shut up!" I quickly tried answering the call, but it ended before I could. I stood up. "Mom, love you!" I grabbed my backpack and car keys and rushed toward the door. "Drive carefully!" Mom shouted. "I will!" "Kimberly!" Jason called. I turned around. "What?" "Try not to fall asleep while driving." I stuck my tongue out at him. "Very funny." I heard both of them laughing as I hurried outside. My Lamborghini was parked in front of the mansion, shining under the morning sun. It had been Dad's gift for my sixteenth birthday. I still remembered the look on my face when he'd handed me the keys. Dad had smiled and said, "Happy birthday, Princess." I had nearly screamed. I climbed into the driver's seat, tossed my backpack onto the passenger seat, and started the engine. A few minutes later, I was driving through the streets of Los Angeles. The morning traffic wasn't helping. I tapped my fingers impatiently against the steering wheel. Amy was definitely going to complain. She complained about everything. Well... almost everything. A few kilometers down the road, I finally spotted her. She was standing beside the sidewalk with her arms folded, constantly checking her watch. The moment she saw my car, she shook her head. I pulled over. She opened the passenger door and climbed inside. "Kimberly Norman," she said dramatically. "You are late." "I'm sorry, Amelia Earhart." She stared at me. "Did you just compare me to Amelia Earhart?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because you're always flying around looking for adventure." She rolled her eyes. "You're impossible." I laughed and pulled back onto the road. For a few seconds, we drove in silence. Then Amy suddenly turned toward me. "Don't tell me you dreamed about him again last night." I immediately felt my cheeks heat up. "You know I always do." Amy's eyes lit up. "I'm listening." "You're way too interested in this." "Of course I am! You've been dreaming about the same mysterious guy for weeks." "It's not every night." "Kimberly." "Fine. Almost every night." She grinned. "So? What happened this time?" I sighed. "Okay..." I tried to remember every detail. "I dreamed we were at the beach." Amy leaned closer. "And?" "We were just having fun. We were laughing, talking..." I smiled without realizing it. "Then we started getting closer." Amy's eyes widened. "Closer how?" I glanced at her. "You know..." "No, I don't know. Tell me!" "There was this tension between us." "What kind of tension?" "The romantic kind!" She gasped. "Finally!" I laughed. "Then he looked at me, and I looked at him..." I paused. Amy was practically holding her breath. "And?" "We were about to kiss." Amy screamed. "You were WHAT?" "Keep your voice down!" "Kimberly!" "But then..." I groaned. "My stupid alarm ruined everything." Amy burst into laughter. I frowned. "It's not funny." "It is absolutely hilarious." "Ugh! We could have kissed!" She continued laughing. By the time we reached the school gates, she was still teasing me. I tried to ignore her. But deep down, I couldn't stop thinking about the dream. There was something different about it. Every time I dreamed about him, his face was never completely clear. I knew his voice. I knew the way he smiled. I knew the feeling I had whenever he looked at me. But I could never see his face properly. It was always just out of reach. And that was the strangest part. How could I dream about someone I had never met? I pushed the thought away. It was only a dream. Right? I drove toward the parking lot and searched for a space. The parking lot was already packed with students. I finally spotted an empty space beside a gray Toyota Camry. "Perfect." I parked the car, grabbed my backpack, and stepped outside. Amy climbed out after me. I shut the door and adjusted my bag on my shoulder. Then I froze. Something made me look up. And that's when I saw him. My heart stopped. Literally. For a moment, everything around me seemed to disappear. The noise of students talking. The sound of cars pulling into the parking lot. The distant ringing of the school bell. Even Amy calling my name seemed to fade into the background. All I could see was him. He was standing several feet away, surrounded by a few students. Tall. Dark-haired. Calm. And somehow... Familiar. My breath caught in my throat. I stared at him. No. It couldn't be. My heart began pounding against my chest. The boy standing in front of me had the exact same eyes I'd seen in my dreams. The same dark hair. The same smile. The same face I'd never been able to see clearly. My fingers tightened around the strap of my backpack. "Kimberly?" I barely heard Amy. "Kimberly!" "What?" She followed my gaze. Her eyebrows immediately rose. "Who are you staring at?" I couldn't answer. The boy suddenly turned. His eyes met mine. And everything inside me went completely still. For one strange second, he simply stared at me. Then something changed in his expression. His eyes widened slightly. Like he knew me. Like he'd been waiting to see me. My heart pounded even harder. He looked away first. I swallowed. No. There was no way. He couldn't be the same person from my dreams. Dreams weren't real. They couldn't predict the future. Could they? I looked at him again. He was already walking away. "Kimberly," Amy whispered, "who is that?" I watched him disappear into the crowd. "I..." I couldn't find the words. Because there was only one thought running through my mind. That was the boy from my dreams.
