MJ POV
The pub is bustling with people as me and my team enter. This is the best place for us to do some recon and observe the people from the area. All we know about the mission is what June had managed to send through to headquarters before she disappeared. She’d had some leads but none that she’d documented exploring yet. So we were coming in with not much to go on, but I’m not worried. I work best with a blank slate. We follow Circe as she beelines it towards an empty table.
All right guys, keep your eyes open for anything unusual. I mind link the group and they nod in understanding as they get comfortable in their stools. I open my senses as I scout the area and my eyes are drawn to the bartender as he fans himself, his eyes in our general direction. A flash of red beside him pulls my gaze to the woman sitting at the bar in front of him and then I’m swimming in an emerald gaze. Time seems to freeze, my heart racing in my chest. She seems as flustered and lost in the moment as me and I feel a smirk tip my lip at my effect on her. As quickly as the moment happened it’s shattered as she breaks my gaze and stands suddenly and makes a beeline for the door. I watch her leave, my wolf intrigued by this mysterious woman, wanting to chase after her and quench our curiosity. Something is pulling us towards her, but we can’t decipher what. I pull my gaze back to her friend and the bartender, her eyes still on the door her friend had disappeared through. Watching her I feel compelled to do something I don’t usually do unless I’m extreme circumstances.
During my training with the guild I managed to unlock something within myself I’d never thought capable. My mother is the one of the most powerful witches in existence, and all the girls in our family inherit her powers. The men however are left on the wayside. But during my intense training I’d not only trained my body, but my mind as well. I stuck myself into becoming the best I could be, determined to do everything and anything I could to protect my family and anyone who needs my help, and in doing so something emerged from me, and I became the first man in my family to inherit my mother’s power. It took me a long time to be able to control my newfound power, but when I finally did, I became a more powerful and skilled warrior. Director Johnson and a handful of my team are the only ones to know this about me, and I keep it very close to the chest, but there is something about this dark-haired woman at the bar that is urging me to use my power.
I take a minute to control my breathing and allow my power to flow through my veins, before it glides from my body, creeping its way towards the woman. My power collided with her aura and a sickness grips my stomach. I can instantly tell she’s a witch, but her aura is being muddied by an unknown source. I fight past the nausea to try and read more into her power, but the oppressive muddiness has me breaking the connection, causing my power to snap back towards me like a rubber band. I keep up my calm facade despite the heaviness I feel from a whatever I’d just touched. I feel her eyes searching the crowd. She felt my examination, but she’s unsure of where it came from. Her eyes widen as she frantically tries to locate the source but with no luck. A hand on my shoulder has me jumping in my seat, my attention pulled to Circe next to me.
“Did you just…” her question dies in her throat as we watch the young woman rush from the bar, her eyes wide. I nod slowly at Circe and take a deep breath as the feeling of heaviness begins to leave me, and taste of nausea dissipates.
What just happened? Circes voice echoes in my head. I grab the beer that Romano just put in front of me and take a drink for something to do while we mind linked.
I used my power on that woman. Circe nods as she too sips at her drink, her gaze scanning the room casually.
And? I take a minute to consider the feelings I just felt whilst reading her aura. Primarily the metallic taste of whatever was clinging to that young witches energy.
It’s hard to explain. Her aura… it’s being clouded by something. She’s definitely a witch. But that’s all I could read from her before I had to break the connection. But she knew I’d been trying to read her. But not that it was me doing it. I sip my beer, trying to erase the metallic taste.
She seemed scared. We should look into her. I nod in agreement as my eyes continue to scan the pub.
Agreed. But for now I think we should continue to observe our surroundings. This is the main hub of socialisation. If anything we’re to happen it’d happen here. At that, we continue our observations, late into the night.
