Kai
My brother laid there unconscious. My heart hammered in my chest. I pulled Miren to the side and asked what happened and she told me about him finding his mate and how she ran away. He chased her and they confessed their feelings to each other before they mated.
“Did he reject his mate, first?” I asked her.
“I-I don’t know. Everything just happened,” she answered frantically. If he didn’t reject his mate, it’s a high possibility that she did this to him and when I find her, she better hope I’ll have mercy on her. I watched as my brother’s chest rose and fell. I knew he was alive, but it still hurt to see him in this state. It reminded me of when Mari was unconscious. It just seems like it’s a domino effect and I don’t know how to make it stop. It’s been a while since I seen her and I miss her so damn much.
I called the doctor and he and the nurse came immediately. Miren explained what happened Ari them in which they frowned empathetically. Despite what he did with Miren, I needed to find out who his mate is. I went outside to get some fresh air and I also needed to think. So many things were happening at once that it was hard to decide which way to go, which one was a priority. To me, Mari and my brother are equally important. I needed my Alpharess just like I needed my brother. My Mari, this beautiful, fiery woman who just blazed into my life and made my world better. I chuckled to myself because if she saw me right now, she would probably tell me to get my s**t together. She would be right. I heard the sound of leaves rustling and I immediately turned in that direction. I saw a small dark-haired woman running away from our pack house. I quickly shifted and caught up with the she-wolf. She paused before turning back towards me.
“You’re Malik’s mate,” I confirmed.
“Yes, I’m Phoebe and you’re the Alpha.”
I didn’t care for any formalities. All I wanted was my brother to wake up. I walked up to her and grabbed her arm. My eyes shifted and Lennie appeared. He growled, showing his sharp teeth that were ready to rip her apart. Usually, Lennie was laid back, but when he’s upset, there’s no barking, just biting.
“You did this to him!”
She shrugged, “I had to, he cheated on me without breaking our mate bond. He humiliated me in front of everyone and for what? A little red b***h of a human.”
Now she was really disrespectful and as bad as I wanted to give Lennie the honor of ripping her apart, I needed her alive. She may be the only way to wake up Malik. “Lennie, stay calm. She’s purposely doing this to rile us up. We can’t let her have that power. Think of Malik.”
“Kai, I really wanna kill this b***h,” he replied in my head.
“I know and if this any other time, I would gladly let you, but we need her alive.” Lennie howled in my head before calming down.
“So your wolf wanted to kill me, huh?” She smugly asked. “Cute. If you kill me, Malik goes with me.”
No more words were said as I roughly grabbed her dragging back to the pack house. Everyone turned their heads when I pushed her into the room where Malik laid unconscious. I partially shifted back. “Wake him up, now!”
She looked at Miren and smirked. “Ahhh so your human that stole my mate. Gotta admit, you’re cute,” she mocked. Miren stepped to her face as Phoebe started to shift. “b***h I’m not about to play any games with you. Wake him up.” Miren’s eyes glowed and that caught Phoebe off guard.
“You’re not human! What are you?”
Miren smiled but it wasn’t her usual pleasant smile. This one has intentions behind it and knowing how powerful she really is, I wasn’t going to be able to let her hurt the only source that could help Malik.
“I’m the woman that Malik really wants and I’m going to be woman that will f**k you up.”
“If you kill me, then he would be as good as dead anyway. I’m the only one with the power to wake him up,” she shrugged.
This little b***h was pushing my buttons. She knew we needed her to wake him up and she was using it to her advantage. Miren’s fists were balled up as she tried to keep her composure. She was going to explode, so I mindlinked with Rafe and told him to take her away while I tried to figure out what the little wolf was up to. Rafe grabbed Miren in which she protested but Rafe whispered to her something and that made her go along with him. This time, I shifted back to my human form and told her to wake him up.
“What do I get if I wake him up?” She asked. Yeah she was definitely a rogue wolf. She was challenging an Alpha which was really disrespectful. I would’ve killed her but my brother’s life was literally in her hands.
“Your life may be will be spared.”
She scoffed, “Yeah, that’s not enough, Alpha. Let me tell you what I want. I want my mate. He was fated to me by the Moon Goddess herself. How is it that he has feelings for someone else? How was he able to not feel our mate bond?” Don’t get me wrong, her questions were valid, but I didn’t care about her feelings enough to answer them.
“So, this is just to have control over him? Do you think he would truly be happy when he loves someone else?”
She shrugged, “He doesn’t have a choice. We were chosen to be together. He only fell for her because he didn't know that I existed. If I wake him up, Alpha, he has to be mine and mine only.” s**t, I needed my Beta here with me and he may hate me for making this deal, but he would be alive. As far as Miren, I would have to explain why she has to stay away from him and she would have to understand.
“Fine,” I said. She smiled knowing that she was getting her way. She walked over and placed her hand on his face while chanting a few words and his eyes popped open. He frowned as he slowly sat up and looked around.
“What the hell happened?” He coughed.
“You had a seizure, but Phoebe, your mate, was able to bring you back,” I explained as I went in to hug him. I stepped back and he looked around and I knew he was looking for Miren. I mindlinked with him and told him we would talk later.
He looked at Phoebe and smiled, “You! You were at the bar,” he remembered. It finally dawned on him that he didn’t reject her first. That’s how she was able to find him.
“That’s me. The one you pushed off of your lap to chase after your little whatever the hell she is.”
Malik’s eyes darkened, “Let me tell you something,” he grabbed her arm. “I may owe you for waking me up, but you will NOT disrespect her in front of me. Don’t forget I marked her and I’m sure pain was rippling through each time me and her kissed.”
She winced, grabbing her abdomen. I’m not sure why Malik was acting this way. I noticed something was off with him. His eyes had a yellow glow around them. This wasn’t his wolf, it was something more powerful.
Miren
I waited and waited hoping that a miracle would happen. I just wanted to hold him and tell him everything would be okay. So much was happening at one time. We still have to find Mari and then this happens. I wondered if this was a punishment from the Gods and Goddesses because I wasn’t initially meant for Malik. Rafe stayed in the room with me, which I appreciated because I was on the verge of losing my mind.
“Are you okay?” He asked with a sympathetic look. “You we’re pretty badass in there.”
“No, I’m not. I should’ve known this was going to happen,” I shook my head.
His brows came together, “How come you didn’t know? You're a goddess, right?”
“Yes, but we’re on Earth and while living on Earth, we’re practically humans just with special abilities but being able to see into the future isn’t one of them. I wish I could, maybe I could’ve prevented all of this.”
“Well it’s not your fault.” I know Rafe really meant it, but I couldn’t shake the fact that in a way it was.
“I still wish there was something I could do,” I became frustrated by all of this. Kai was in there with Malik’s fated mate and I have no clue what they’re discussing.
“Well, technically, since Malik marked you when you guys mated together, then you can always fight her for Malik. Our pack law states that when a ranking wolf has more than one mated, fated or not, one can challenge the other for his love. The winner will be declared the true mate.”
“Really?” This piqued my interest.
“Yes,” he answered.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Fight for him? He’s worth it so I’ll definitely fight for him. I reacted quickly and ran to hug Rafe. He let out a chuckle.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, Miren, but I actually think you are better suited for Malik.”
I smiled, “Thank you.” I stepped away from him as the door opened and Kai walked in.
My heart was beating fast as I was hoping to hear good news. Kai let out a breath. “He’s awake.”
I was immediately heading to the door before his words stopped me. “But Miren, you can’t see him anymore so whatever you two had going on is over.”
“What? Why?” I know I’m not supposed to question the Alpha, but I couldn’t just accept this. Thankfully, Alpha Kai, isn’t ruthless and he understood my questioning.
“I made a deal with Phoebe. If she woke up Malik, he has to be with her.”
I shook my head, anger was surging through every part of my body. “No! He doesn’t want to be with her. He loves me! He told me so, himself. Why would you force him to do this? Why would you make that deal?”
“I had to!” He shouted. “I wanted my brother back and did whatever I could to get him back. I’m sorry Miren that you’re hurting, but you need to let him go.” Let him go? I will never do that. The tears flowed down my face as I straightened my shoulders. There was no way was accepting this. Just then, it dawned on me. Rafe words about the pack law.
“Well according to your pack law, I can challenge Phoebe for Malik’s love, right?” He was caught off by my question.
“How do you-“ he stopped himself before looking at Rafe who just threw his hands up. He turned his head towards me his jaw a little tight. Don’t get me wrong, I respect Kai, but I will fight for Malik. “Yes, you can, if he marked you, which he did.”
I moved my hair to one side revealing the one of the marks he left on me, “He sure did and he didn’t reject me either so I would like to challenge Phoebe.”
Feeling a little more determined, I waited for Kai’s reply and he was hesitant, but the law was the law and I have just as much of a right to fight for Malik.
“Okay,” he nodded. His expression was filled with amusement instead of frustration this time. “This challenge will take place a week from now. So get ready.”
Oh you’ll bet your wolf’s a*s that I’ll be ready.
