CHAPTER 1
THE BETRAYAL UNVEILED
Are you certain about this, doctor? The nurse’s voice cracked as she stared at Sarah lying motionless on the surgery table.
Coldly, the doctor said, "Follow orders." "Her husband said to focus on the baby and not worry about her."
Sarah's eyes whirled. She couldn’t move, couldn’t talk. Though her body felt tired, her mind was racing. Michael... he said what?
The nurse mumbled, "I don't understand," as she glanced at Sarah's pallid face. "Why wouldn't they give the mother any thought? She was gushing blood.
The voice of the doctor lacked emotion. Michael was pretty clear about it. This is not her story. For the sister, that is.
Sarah felt her heart race. The sibling... What was happening? Elena was involved, but why? She was too weak to combat the fog obscuring her thoughts with her mind. Her stomach ached more and more, and the world around her dimmed.
The nurse said to herself, "I just hope this doesn't kill her."
The doctor angrily said, "It's not our problem." "Just keep the baby in mind."
Michael... Elena... Sarah felt herself drifting into slumber, their names echoing in her mind. Her body refused to listen to her mind's cries for explanations. And then it was all black.
Sarah gave a blink. Unlike the bright glare from the operation room, the light was gentle. Now she was somewhere else. Yes, a hospital, but it's not the same.
Where am I, exactly? Her voice was rough as she whispered.
Beside her, a cool voice murmured, "You're safe now."
With a gentle shift of her head, Sarah's eyesight cleared. A guy sat beside her bed and gave her a worried expression. He wasn’t acquainted, yet something about him seemed... secure.
She tried to sit up and said, "Who are you?" She felt a sharp pain and flinched.
The guy stopped her with a gentle touch on her shoulder and murmured, "Take it easy." "My name is David. I learned what happened to you. It almost didn't happen to you.
Sarah's gaze expanded. "What are you trying to say? What exactly took place?
David leaned back in his chair with a sigh. "I heard the nurses discussing your issue when I was working at the hospital on some legal matters. They were claiming that your spouse gave them the order to put the baby before you.
“Michael?” Sarah's throat was constrained. "Why would he do that?"
David said, his look serious, "I don't know." However, it seemed as if they were indifferent to your survival. There's a problem here.
Sarah's thoughts were racing. Michael had promised her everything when they were married. He told her he loved her, and they would have a family together. However, as of late...
She mumbled, scarcely able to speak the name, "Elena."
David squinted his eyes. "Your sibling?"
Sarah's voice became louder as she added, "She's not my sister." "Selected. But she had everything all the time. Michael, he
With a worried expression on his face, David bent forward. "Sarah, I don't believe envy is the only factor. There’s something deeper going on. The hospital responded strangely when I requested records, as if they had something to hide. Sarah's heart constricted. "You believe that Michael and Elena are..."
David gave a nod. “I think they planned this.”
Sarah trembled her hands and shook her head. However, why? What would they stand to benefit from?
“I don’t know all the details yet,” David answered, his voice quiet but forceful. "However, I am certain that whatever they are up to, it will not work out well for you."
Sarah's eyes started to flood with tears, but she fought them back. "How are you aware of this? How do you know for sure?
David let out a sigh. "Because there was tampering with the hospital records." Everything happened so abruptly that you were both expected to be saved. All the evidence leads to your spouse as the one who paid them off.”
Sarah felt her heart sink. Was this the guy she'd loved and trusted? Breathing hard, she felt like her world had spun out of control. "Michael... he... didn't want me to make it through?"
David gave a somber nod. "I fear that's the case."
Sarah was filled with terror, bewilderment, and betrayal. "Now what should I do? How am I going to confront him? How am I going to stop them?
David sprang to his feet, resolved to shine his eyes. In this, you're not alone yourself. I'll support you. Together, we'll find out the truth about this. But you must maintain your strength.
Sarah took a deep breath and attempted to take it all in. “Why are you helping me?” she questioned, her voice shaking.
After a little pause, David looked directly into her eyes. "Since nobody else will. And the truth is something you deserve.
Sarah's hands tightened. "I don't know why they would act in this manner. Elena, why? Why would she take such a risk?
David averted his gaze, perhaps mentally assembling a puzzle. "I don't currently know all the solutions. However, I believe your sister is looking for more than simply attention. Something more substantial.
Sarah felt her breath catch. Greater than destroying my life?
David gave a nod. Indeed. She seems to desire all that you own. Additionally,
Sarah's thoughts raced. Though Elena had always been envious and cunning, this was beyond anything she could have predicted. However, Michael? I believed... I believed he loved me.
David's gaze became gloomy. Maybe at the beginning. However, right now? He's committed to Elena too much. It's hazardous, whatever they're plotting, and unless we stop them first, they won't stop.
Sarah’s body shook with fury and dread. Though she found it hard to trust what she was hearing, she knew in her heart that it was genuine. "They desired my death."
David steadily and firmly placed a hand on her shoulder. "They never intended for you to live."
