The invitation arrived wrapped in politeness and threat—a private dinner hosted by one of the oldest rival families. Alicia recognized the move instantly. It wasn’t a gesture of peace. It was a test.
The long table glittered under low chandeliers as conversations flowed too smoothly. Alicia sat composed, her posture flawless, her expression unreadable. She felt the weight of attention pressing in from every angle. Questions were asked carefully, smiles sharp beneath their elegance.
“And your associate?” one man asked casually, eyes flicking toward him. “He seems… close.”
Alicia’s fingers tightened briefly around her glass before she relaxed. “He’s trusted,” she replied coolly. “That’s all that matters.”

She studied him for a moment, then shook her head. “No.”
