The veiled substitute
The heavy lace of the bridal veil felt like a suffocating shroud.
I stood in the dim holding room of the cathedral, my hands shaking so violently I almost dropped the bouquet of white orchids. In the mirror, I didn't see myself. I saw a ghost. I was wearing my twin sister’s custom-tailored designer gown, stepped into her silk heels, and forced into a role I never wanted.
Clara had run. Two hours ago, my sister had packed her bags and fled the country, terrified of marrying the city’s most dangerous syndicate kingpin, Soren Evandor. And instead of tracking her down, our parents had thrown me to the wolves.
"Stop trembling, Sophie," my mother hissed from behind me, her fingers digging painfully into my shoulders as she adjusted the heavy veil over my face. "If Soren finds out you are a substitute before the papers are signed, he will liquidate your father’s company by midnight. You owe us this. You will walk down that aisle, you will sign that registry, and you will play the part of Clara until we find a way out."
"You ruined your own business, Mother," I whispered, my voice thick with a mix of fury and betrayal. "I am an antique restorer. I don't belong in his world."
"You belong wherever we tell you to belong," my father snapped, opening the heavy oak doors of the dressing room. The distant, booming sound of the cathedral organ echoed inside. "It’s time. Don't ruin this."
Before I could drag air into my lungs, I was being marched down the aisle.
The cathedral was packed with the city’s elite, but I couldn't see any of them through the thick fabric of the veil. All I could see was the towering, shadow-like silhouette standing at the altar.
Soren Evandor.
He was wearing a flawlessly tailored black tuxedo that did nothing to hide the sheer, lethal breadth of his shoulders. Even from a distance, the dark, intricate tattoos coiling up his throat were visible. He stood like a king awaiting a sacrifice.
My father handed my hand over to him. The moment Soren’s large, gloved hand closed around my fingers, a cold jolt of pure electricity shot up my arm. His grip was unyielding.
The ceremony passed in a terrifying blur of Latin vows and ringing bells. I signed the marriage registry with a trembling hand, forging my sister’s signature just to keep my family from ruin.
It wasn't until we were inside the back of his armored limousine, the privacy glass rolling up to seal us away from the flashing cameras of the press, that the trap finally snapped shut.
"You can take that ridiculous thing off now," Soren’s voice sliced through the silence of the car. It was a low, gravelly baritone that made my spine turn to absolute ice.
With shaking fingers, I lifted the heavy lace veil and pushed it back over my hair. I braced myself for his fury, waiting for him to notice that the woman sitting across from him wasn't the glamorous, golden-haired Clara he had agreed to marry.
Soren didn't yell. He merely leaned back against the leather seat, crossing one long leg over the other. His dark, piercing eyes scanned my face, taking in my messy bun, my pale cheeks, and the fierce, defensive glare I couldn't completely hide.
A slow, dangerous smirk touched his lips.
"You aren't Clara," he murmured smoothly, his eyes darkening with an intensity that made my breath catch.
My heart hammered against my ribs. "You... you knew?"
"I knew the moment I took your hand at the altar," Soren said, leaning forward until his shadow completely enveloped me. The faint scent of cedarwood and expensive tobacco filled the space. "Clara’s hands are soft. Yours have callus marks from tools. Your sister is a coward, but you... you walked straight into a monster's den to save a family that clearly doesn't deserve you."
I swallowed hard, forcing my chin up. "What are you going to do to us?"
Soren reached out, his long fingers gently catching my jaw, forcing me to look directly into his lethal, captivating eyes.
"Your parents think they fooled me, but they've just handed me a far more interesting prize," he whispered, his thumb brushing against my lower lip. "We are going to play a new game now, Sophie. You are my wife under the law. You will play the part perfectly in public, and in exchange, I will give you a level of protection your family could only dream of. But cross me, and I will destroy everything you love. Do we have a deal?"
Looking at the dangerous man who now held my entire future in his hands, I realized my quiet life was officially over. I nodded slowly. "We have a deal."
