Man my heart is racing. I need to get back home and get some water. There was a group behind me fast-walking with their children playing on devices close behind and laughing. It's 5 AM what kind of prissy parents start their day by waking their kids up before 5AM to go on a walk with their girlfriends? I didn't want to speak to anyone this early in the morning. Maybe I should walk the rest of the block home and let them pass in front of me.
A black Mercedes with tinted windows passed by. They looked as if they had been still partying from the night prior.
"Run!" said an alarming voice. What the hell was wrong with me. I was trembling as I looked around. There was commotion down the street and those people started yelling at one another. As if my body went into auto-pilot, I could not stop running. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them I was back at home?
How peculiar I could have sworn I had at least half a block left. The calming smell of my lavender wax melts comforted me as I broke down silently. I knew for a moment that I wasn't in control of my body, but I wondered, who the f**k was that. Were they trying to keep me safe? Just then my phone was ringing. I begrudgingly answered, "Hello?"
"Oh my God! You're okay! I know you've always ran every morning since you were 17, and so after watching the news I had to make sure you were alright! And-" I cut her off after I looked down at my watch. It was already 5:10. I had been unconscious for at least 5-10 minutes. "Mom, What are you talking about?" There was an ambulance rushing down my street from the direction of the crowd when I peaked outside. No siren on.
"Wait, Hon are you at school? Am I interrupting a class right now. I'm sorry I had to make sure you were okay.." There was a pause.
A police car siren went off along with many others to follow. Loud and intrusive I looked outside again and there were already a dozen police cars minimum and more showing up to the scene. "Honey. There was a group of women that were running on your block. Some had even brought their children."
"No.." is all I could mumble. I sat down waiting to hear the damage.
"There was a drive-by shooting, on your block, on 2nd ST. Turn on News 25 Live." I did. All I could do was question if it really happened. I didn't even hear gunshots, so how could that be possible? "-fore the intoxicated gang members had driven away, their vehicle swerved and they attempted to steal a 5 year old, Millie H. Johnson. Reportedly the mothers were yelling and causing commotion, seeking help, the Neighborhood Watch notified the police. The gang members decided to act before anyone could stop the-" I switched the TV off in a panic.
"Mom, how could this be?" I had hot tears streaming down my face. I was livid, thinking about the thoughts that must've rushed through the little girl's mind before this. "None of them made it sweetie, and as of right now Millie Johnson is a missing person's case."
*BEEP BEEP*.. *BEEP BEEP*
"s**t, mom I got to go to school it's 5:20. Love ya bye." I sniffled.
"Bye-bye love try to focus today. It'll be okay... Love you too, bye." *CLICK*
