C H A P T E R    T E N  Audrey's Pov The bright sun hit my face as I sat down by the edge of the water fountain. The flowers were breathtaking, the colors shone off giving life to the garden. A place that once used to be filled with hundreds of students was now empty. This used to be a common place for students to come to, but because of an incident people had forgotten about this place. There was a fire which the school tried to fix but failed to do so. After the incident, I decided that I would slowly fix the garden and I did. Ever since then this would be my hideout and I would eat lunch here. The bell rang and I got up and made my way towards class. I couldn't help but think about the incident in gym class. After he asked the question, I zoomed out of there as fast as I could. Once I made my way inside the classroom, I instantly regretted it because everyone that I wanted to avoid were sitting down right in front of me. I made my way towards the far end of the room and sat down by the window seat. I felt someone sit beside me, but ignored him knowing that it was Connor. "Okay class, settle down, we are going to have group seating and that will be your group for the rest of the year." the teacher said and some students groaned, but I was nervous. "Connor, Sarah, Chloe and Kylie up here." The teacher pointed at the table which was on the other side of the room. "Thank god," Connor got up and made his way while Kylie looked at me and mouthed 'kill me' and made her way as well. "Jake, Ryder, Aaron, and Audrey." The nervousness died down making me drown with fear. Why does it have to be them? I glance at Connor to find him already staring at me. I looked away and got up slowly. I couldn't feel my legs but I forced myself to walk towards my seat and the only seat that was open was next to Jake's. "Hey Audrey, do you enjoy stealing other people's boyfriends? Just out of curiosity. I mean if you are that desperate for a boyfriend you could've come to me and I would've gladly opened up my arms for you." Ryder chuckled at his remark, but Aaron's smile had disappeared. My throat dried up. Words couldn't express how I felt right now. I tried to say something but nothing was coming out. They didn't even know me. How could they make a judgment? "Hey man, now you're taking it far." Aaron responds. Ryder looks at Aaron confused, but then chuckles in realization. "I see you are doing it because of her right? You are a smart guy man never thought that you could play dirty." Ryder said and pats Aaron's back but Aaron pushed his hands away. "So my place or yours?" Jake asked as he put his hand on top of mine. My face was heating up by the second and my tears threatened to come out. I take my hand away from him and turn away slightly as I bit my tongue. "Dude knock it off." Aaron said harshly, catching them by surprise and me as well. Finally getting the courage I ask them. "Why are you being rude to me? I didn't do anything to you," I asked them. Ryder's mischievous eyes darkened like the sky at nightfall. "Rude? This is barely anything. The fact that you are forcing Connor into marrying you should be a good enough reason." Really? That's the reason why they are being rude to me? "This is ridiculous, I told him multiple times that I didn't want to marry him and he tells you this? I have no idea why he won't believe me," I told them. "Sarah's right, she knew that you would deny the truth to get us on your good side." Ryder said. "I agree." Jake said while nodding. There is no point in explaining they are going to take everything I say against me. Playing with my bracelet I smile tightly, trying not to cry. "Today is the day you are going to die." The song played as my phone rang. I flinched slightly as the song continued to play, who would do this to me? I quickly ended the call and threw the phone on the table as my breathing got heavy. I look around to see who put that awful ringtone on my phone and I caught the sight of Sarah motioning me to check my phone. My hand shook as I picked up my phone and it read: "You got scared over this? Pathetic watch out there is more to come after all you're the birthday girl." I shut my phone quickly as my eyes teared up. Why is she doing this to me? Why can't she trust me for once? "I can't do this anymore." The three boys in front of me gave me a confused look, but ignoring them I gathered all my stuff and made my way out of class. I could care less as the teacher called my name. Once I got out of the classroom I realized that I came here with Connor and I didn't have a car. Great, just what I needed. "Really? How could you leave the class without me? If you were ditching you should've asked me I would've joined you." Kylie's lips curled up giving me a teasing smile. "I'm sorry, I was just frustrated. Anyways, do you want to go to the diner that's nearby?" I asked and she nodded as we both made our way out of the building in the far right corner. There wasn't much security especially at the end of the day. "Come on, forget about everything, it's my treat I'll pay." Smiling at her, we enter the diner and make our way towards our usual spot. This diner has been here for as long as I can remember. Kylie and I used to come here a lot when we were younger. "That was the longest walk in my life." I slumped down on the chair and put water in the glass and quickly gulped it all down. "Audrey it was a three minute walk. I wonder how you are on the track and you hate any type of cardio." She muttered and I shrugged my shoulder. "Today was the worst day ever." Kylie said as she drank her glass of water. "How come?" I asked. "In the car ride they were talking about you behind your back and I kind of blew up. Then, in gym she was talking s**t about you to Ryder and after that she did the same thing with Aaron and Jake. I wanted to say something but Connor stopped me every chance I got." She said frustratedly as she held the glass tightly in her hand. "I swear, Audrey if I ever see him I will break his face into pieces and feed it to Sarah." Kylie slams her cup down onto the table harshly. I grab the cookie that was on the table and shove it in her mouth. The one thing that I liked about this diner is that they gave you free fresh cookies. "Why don't you have one, Kylie. It looks like you could use one." She bit into the cookie and glared at me. "Should we go and order something now?" I suggested trying to change the conversation and attention elsewhere. "Fine but-" the bell at the diner rang and the one person that I was trying to avoid entered. It was none other than Connor black and his friends. I moved towards the side so that they couldn't see me. They were sitting right behind us, but thankfully the booths were big enough to hide us. "Would you two like to order now?" The waiter asked. I looked up at the waiter to find him checking me out which made me blush. He must be new because I've never seen him here before. I ordered my usual and when it was Kylie's turn, she smirked and ordered as well. Kylie stopped him and gave a piece of paper to him. I'm not sure what it was, but the waiter winked at me and made his way back to the counter. "What did you give him?" I questioned but Kylie smiled brightly in return instead of giving me an answer. "It's a beautiful day today isn't it?" she said while humming. I narrowed my eyes at her and said: "Kylie Anderson what are you hiding from me?" "I may or may not have given him your number," she said sheepishly. I choked on air and coughed rather loudly. Once, my breathing went back to normal I exclaimed, "What! Why did you do that?" I was about to scold her but stopped once I heard my name. I looked at Kylie and she gave me the same reaction I had as well. "Audrey is fake. Trust me, I thought she was a good person as well but it is all a part of her plan. She is trying to make Sarah look like the bad guy here." Connor said. "I agree with you." Ryder said. "What makes you think that?" Aaron asked. I move slightly to the side trying to hear what they're saying. "Sarah told me." Connor responded and Aaron scoffed. "What's so funny, Aaron?" Ryder asked. "I don't think she's lying." Aaron responded. "Yeah, I'm with Aaron on this one are you sure it isn't a misunderstanding or something? I kind of felt bad after the way I treated her. She didn't seem like she had a motive." Jake said agreeing with Aaron. I look at Kylie to see her surprised as well. "Why?" Connor asked. His tone was laced with curiosity and from my peripheral vision I could see his elbows slightly on the table. "Look, I've had a couple classes with her since freshman year all the way until junior year. I don't know her but the way she behaves in class she doesn't seem like the type of person who would do such a thing. I believe we were in a couple of group projects together. She didn't even look at me weirdly or hit on me like the other girls in our group did. She did her work and stayed quiet even though she did most of the work. "The teacher must have realized that she had done all the work. Then one of the girls in the group blamed Audrey and accused her of threatening them to not do anything. I tried to intervene but she stopped me. She allowed the teacher to give her an F on the project, and gave me and the other two girls A's on the group project even though we didn't even do anything. She got in trouble and you want to know something." "Audrey did it because she didn't want to see the other girl get in trouble because of the lie she said. Audrey also said that she remembered one time in tenth grade that the girl who had lied had cuts and bruises on her arms. The same girl was in a similar situation before and after the whole incident happened the girl thanked her and apologized. The girl said it was her defense mechanism and that she couldn't stop herself and that she is grateful. She's a good person. Well, I know she is a good person. There are other things that she has done and this is one of the many she's done," Aaron chimed in and I couldn't help but smile. This was the first time someone other than Kylie has defended me and thought of me this way. "Oh, and she hasn't skipped class since the third grade." He added. I furrow my eyebrows confused as to how he knew that. "How do you know that?" Ryder asked. "They announced it during assembly last year. I have a good memory. If I hear it once, I will remember it," Aaron said. I was slightly shocked as to what he said about me. I thought he would think the same as the others. "People change." Connor countered. "I'm just saying it could all just be one big misunderstanding. I'm just saying if anyone else that I kind of know was in her place and if they're innocent I'd defend them" Aaron said still not giving in. "Look at this." Connor said. What is he showing him? It was quiet for a couple of minutes and then I heard a sigh. "You're right sorry man I thought she was innocent I guess not." He said and I looked at Kylie as my jaw dropped slightly. What just happened? My heart clenched slightly. What did he show him that made him change his mind about me? "He was just defending you two minutes ago. What happened?" Kylie asked. The food came and this time a girl waitress delivered it and left. I was about to dip the fries in the ketchup only to realize that it wasn't there. I slightly panicked knowing that the ketchup was on the other side and I had to pass them to get the ketchup. "Kylie can you get ketchup for me?" I whispered ever-so-lightly. Kylie nodded and I let a shaky breath relieved but right then Kylie sat down hurriedly and glared at me. "Hell no, I don't want to see them just eat your fries plain. How about you go to the counter and get ketchup from there. There is a fifty-fifty chance they might not see you," she whispered and I nodded agreeing with her idea. It seemed very tempting if you asked me. I got up and made my way towards the front counter to find the guy smiling. "May I have some ketchup?" I asked but someone behind me asked at the same exact time. s**t. It's Connor oh god this can't happen right now. Just don't turn around and everything will be alright. I felt my heartbeat fasten as he gave me the ketchup. Now how do I get out of here without getting caught? I'll go the other direction and he won't see me then. Yeah, let's do that. Me being the clumsy person I am, I trip and someone grabs my wrist pulling me towards them so that I won't fall. My face hit his chest and I looked down and scared to see his reaction. "Audrey, why are you-" Kylie stopped midway realizing that she messed up. "We've got to stop meeting like this." Connor muttered under his breath. My cheeks burned in embarrassment. I pulled away not looking at him, grabbing the coke, and made my way towards my booth. That's when I realized I messed up. Jake, Ryder, and Aarons eyes widened realizing that we were sitting right next to them the entire time. "Well, would you look at the time I have to go." Ryder said. "Yeah, I'll go with you." Jake said. "I'll come with." Aaron said and they were all about to leave, but Connor stopped them. I sat down in my seat and drank my coke... wait, since when did I order a coke? "One of you has to come with me." Connor said. I pressed my head against the wall and drank my coke which tasted odd ,but I needed it. "Aaron, how about you go with Connor," Jake said and after that, for some reason I couldn't hear properly. Everything seemed so hazy and different. "Audrey, why didn't you buy m-hey are you okay?" I gulped down the last bits of the coke and shook it to see if there was any more left. Huh, that's weird I want more. I felt my phone ring only to find my mother calling me. Rolling my eyes I pick up the call, "Hello." "Where are you? You were supposed to be home an hour ago." She continued to bicker but I ignored her. Why is she so annoying? "Can you stop talking? My brain is hurting from your voice. Go talk to Rachel or something." I responded and I heard a gasp from my mother and Kylie. Why are they being so dramatic? I'm telling the truth. "When you come home-" "I don't care because I am not coming home, you hear me! I'm not." I stop and laugh as I defied my mother. Kylie tried to take the phone away from my phone but I stopped her from doing so by swatting her hand. "Are you drunk?" she asked. "Maybe, I don't know, aren't you the mother? You should know everything. Anyways, I've got to go know oh my gosh look Kylie it's the hot waiter. Wow, I didn't have to go anywhere but now I do bye mother I love you...not." I ended the call before she could say anything. "Audrey, what the hell is wrong with you and where did you get this cup from?" Kylie asked. "s**t, I thought I threw my cup away. Oh god, this is bad." The hot waiter muttered. "Hey, what are you doing? It's my cup, don't touch it." I tried to get my cup back, but failed to do so. He brushed his hair back and looked at me worriedly. Kylie took the cup and smelled it and her eyes widened in realization. "Did you try to d**g her, oh god, I can't believe I gave you her number. Get the hell away from her you freak." She pushed the waiter slightly back and argued about something. Whatever, I walked my way towards the door. Everything was blurry, I couldn't see anything. I opened my eyes with my hands. While bending down I dragged my feet towards the door. I probably looked like some creep, but that didn't matter. My head hit something and it hurt so bad. I tried again and I hurt myself once again. I opened my eyes to see nothing then what was I hitting? "Where is the goddamn door and why does my head hurt." I tried to go again but I felt someone wrap their arms around my waist pulling me back. "Help, someone help! He is trying to rob me," I laughed when I freed myself from the person who captured me only to hit myself with something again. "Why is the door fighting me? Why can't I go?" I tried to go again but someone pulled me back by grabbing my arm. "That is the glass wall, what is wrong with you? You're hurting yourself. Look, your forehead is all red now." He said as he examined my head I believe. I tried to open my eyes but ended up squinting. "The light hurts my eyes and you're hurting me. Ouch, it hurts, ow, ow-" He let go of my arm as he looked at me worriedly. This is it, I try to run toward the door again but he throws me over his shoulder stopping me. "Let me go....let it gooooo let it goooo can't hold me back anymore...haha, I am so funny." I laughed as I hit his back as he made his way outside and towards his car. "Stop moving." Connor said. "No, you stop moving," I said as I wiggled around his hold. Connor stopped moving and so did I. "What's going on?" I slurred as my headache pounded. "Shh, stop talking." He muttered as he pulled something out of his back pocket. My vision was close to black and my head felt like a bold dozer hit it a couple of times. "Hey who are you- Oh Connor thank god you have Audrey I thought I lost her." Kylie said worriedly. "What happened to her?" Connor asked. "Her drink got spiked."
