Chapter Six

845 Words
I followed Miss Stevens’ suggestion to focus and pretend I was alone with my friends. It helped me a lot, even if people stared at me, it didn’t bother me anymore, and the more I didn’t bother, they didn’t bother to look as well. “Hey, you’re getting the hang of it. Good for you, girl.” “Thanks to Miss Stevens.” “Proud friend here.” “Thanks, Khrystel.” “See you later, I have computer class today.” “Yeah, I have baking later as my elective as well.” “See you. Call if you need me.” “Thanks!” And we separated in the hall. As I entered my math class, Stephen came and waved at me. “Just checking on you. I’m in the room next to you.” “Thanks, Stephen.” And we waved saying see you later. One guy classmate came near me. “Hi, I’m Albert. Just want you to know, you’re not fat and you’re definitely not ugly.” I grinned from ear to ear. “Thanks!” “If I don’t have a girl, I will definitely court you.” That caught my attention. How come, Amber, Khrystel, and I don’t have boyfriends? Are we lesbians or is it because nobody is courting us. We had suitors before but since times have changed and courting is not like before, guys tend to stay away from us because we are always together. Guys in our school like the mutual relationship, no formal courting but just the wink and dating. We don’t affirm such relationships. We want the real deal one. Something we can be proud of, I guess that’s why guys shun us. They may even think we are gay sometimes, but we are not, we are just the serious fun-loving gals. Amber almost had a boyfriend before but the guy was possessive and wants Amber to stop being with us. Like duh, we have been friends since forever so Amber dumped him. Since then, she never had another one even if she had other suitors. Some boys tried to court me and Khrystel but we don’t want the childish boys in school, we want men who can handle us and treat us like ladies. I thought Michael was a gentleman, but I was wrong. My infatuation with him has been washed away by my tears and I only see him now as a black hat. I was elated by what Albert did. A cute guy telling me that I am not fat and ugly made me like to make myself prettier and charming. When I came home that day, I asked my mom a question I never thought I would. “Mom, have you thought or felt before...I mean when you were younger that you were gay?” My mom looked at me as if she was stunned and doesn’t know what I meant. So I made things clearer. “I mean when you were so much younger, did it strike you that you might be a lesbian?” My mom was still quizzical but faced me to tell me her attention is now on me. “Why did you asked?” “Well, a guy kinda told me today that I wasn’t fat and ugly like what that director bluntly told me. I was elated, but the question ran in my mind. Why is it that my friends and I don’t have boyfriends?” My mom’s face had a tinge of pity for me. “If I am not that fat and ugly, why don’t I have a boyfriend? So is Amber and Khrystel.” “Are there boys courting you and your friends?” “Well, there was Jacob who courted me last 6 months ago, Amber had a boyfriend last year that she dumped after telling her that she shouldn’t see us, her friends, that often.” “And Khrystel?” “She had several suitors which she didn’t bother to know or pry on.” “So what’s the problem with that?” “We never talked about boys that much, and never shuddered because of them.” “Do you see something wrong about it, Olivia?” “Some of the girls in school who’s the same age as us always talk about boys, and they shriek every time a cute guy walks by.” “When you said cute guy, why did you say he’s cute.” And I shrugged my shoulders before I answered my mom with a smirk. “Mom, because he’s cute.” “So you see some guys as cute, am I right?” “Yeah, I guess so.” “Maybe, your goals always steps in when a cute guy comes along.” And she raised her hand and pointer both index fingers up and down to point out and emphasize the word cute. “But if someone comes along and I really like the guy, can I have a boyfriend?” “If you think he is worth it. But can we check on him first?” “Sure mom.” “Keep up that head high and those freely hand tight.”
