There were two bundles. As soon as he positioned one, he ran back for the other. The sweat clung to his back and he tore off his coat, despite the rain. If only he could take his time, then it wouldn’t be so debilitating, but he had no option. At any time, a car could arrive and if both bundles weren’t in place, stretched across the lane, then it would have all been nothing. He gritted his teeth and heaved the second across the road to join the first. He repositioned the jumble of broken and twisted branches across the nearside lane so that any oncoming vehicle would have to hit them, career out of control, and be at his mercy.
