prologue
Natalie POV Three years ago.... He was catastrophic, in fact chaos himself. My husband stood Five kilometers away from me but the rage he emitted felt so close to my skin like a knife. Slamming his fist into the jaw of a barely alive man under his grip. I held my breath, trying hard not to make a sound. My stomach churned, hair raising at the back of my neck as cold sweat trickled down my spine. Naturally, I would have screamed, felt disgusted, and ran away from the brutal sight of my husband's rage. But I stood at a place, rigid, unable to utter a word as I witnessed the gruesome blood bath. The man's blood splattered each time he pummeled his face, letting out a cracking sound of his bones. I held onto my dress, begging for everything to stop. But his fists knew no bounds as they echoed in the dim room from his punches. Satisfied with his damage, he tossed the man aside. Turning on his heels, his furious gaze landed on me. I swallowed hard, taking slow steps backwards as he approached me with menacing steps. "Are you afraid of me now?You have seen what I can do, the damage I can inflict on anyone who disobeys me. The brutality of my wrath, Sunshine," he grumbled coldly, staring into my eyes with a deadly gaze that could kill me if it was physical. "What if I have seen it? what difference does it make? All I see is you, Mario. I...I love you," I trembled, my voice betraying me. He narrowed his eyes on me, capturing my cheeks between his bloody fingers. I tried not to panic, not to flutter in fear but lips quivered. I bit them back into my mouth, holding my breath from creasing his face. Mario was good at detecting fear and he knew more than anyone how terrible I was at hiding my emotions. "You must be out of your mind. What did I warn you about this marriage? Never to say those worthless words to me," he scowled. Tears burned at the back of my eyes as his fingers dig into my cheeks. Our marriage was based on benefits and no love. He needed a bride to clear the rumors about him and I needed to support my family back home. But I couldn't help but fall for my husband. I don't know how or when it happened. But one thing I knew for sure was his ability to take my breath away. Mario was not the kind of man that expressed emotions. But his little gestures of kindness made my heart flutter. I tried to hide it but my feelings grew worse everyday. Staring into his eyes, I reached out my hand to touch his face but he moved away from me and glared. His reaction crushed my soul, piercing my chest like a sharp blade. I teared up, trembling as I knew what was to come next. "Mario, I am sorry. I just want us to be happy together," I snobbed, rubbing my belly with my shaky hand. But he was too dense to understand, his entire being was swallowed by rage. "You still don't understand, do you?" he questioned, lifting my chin with his thumb and index fingers. "I am not a charming prince, Natalie. Not a hero from a fantasy tale. You had only one instruction to keep. But you failed, so do the needy and don't get me more annoyed than I already am," he grumbled, letting go of my face. I tried to remain calm, not to break down in front of him. But my tears flowed down staining my cheeks. Retrieving a file from his bodyguard, he passed it to me. I nervously opened it, my hands trembling, breathe hinged as I brought out the file in the envelope. Tension stiffened my bones, making it unbearable for me to breathe properly. The atmosphere became more dense when I read the first words on the file. Divorce Agreement. Mario bestowed the terror I dreaded the most to me. "What do I need this for?" I asked with a shaky voice staring at the murderous papers. "Do I need to explain what it is for you to understand what it is? Sign the divorce papers, You will be funded hundred million dollars as our parting reward," he dryly said, clicking his fountain pen for me to sign. "I don't want your money, Mario. Why can't we be together?" I questioned holding his dark green gaze. He yanked me closer to him, his breath assaulting my cheeks with a brutal force that sent a jolt through my body. My stomach does an awful somersault making my heart erupt with an overwhelming emotion. "Do I have to repeat myself for you to understand that you are now worthless to me?" "That's not true, Mario. I know you care about me," I whimpered as his nails dig into my skin causing me pain. "You are delusional to think that I have such fetish feelings for you. Sign the divorce papers and get out of my sight!" he growled. I took the pen in his hand, trembling as I signed the divorce papers. "Collins, kick her out of the house and make sure she leaves with everything that belongs to her," he ordered, leaving the room once he was done talking. I crouched to the floor, holding my belly protectively as I cried out from heartbreak. "Miss Natalie, we have to leave now," Collins, wrenched me up and began to drag me out of the house. Collins was Mario's right-hand man and closest friend I had seen with my husband. "Wait, please, just give me a chance to talk to him. I can't leave without him giving me a reason for our divorce, Collins. Please, I love him so much," I begged him and he paused, looking at me with sympathy. He let go of my arm and turned his head away. "Guards, find the Young Miss. She has escaped my presence," he echoed down the hall giving me the chance to go back to Mario. "Thank you," I whispered before running back to Mario's room. With heavy steps, I stopped in front of his gigantic doors. Breathing in, I mentally calm myself down. Still my anxiety reflexed as I clutched my dress tight. Pushing his door open, I let out a heavy as my answer stood in front of me. Standing next to Mario was another woman with silver hair, her dress hunched up to her waist and her body pressed to his length. They didn't acknowledge my presence, not even Mario who was looking at me with intent in his eyes. The remaining hope I had shattered instantly, my heart shrunk as pain surged in. I turned my back on them and found my way down to exist, never looking back as pain wretched my chest. Collins stood at the door waiting for me. I stumbled on my foot, ready to impact the hard floor but he caught me on time. "Please, be careful young Miss," he said, but I was too broken to take heed of his advice. I wandered out of the mansion, getting into the awaiting car that drove me away from the gloomy mansion. I cried helplessly taking a deep vow in my heart never to love again.
