Chapter 1: The First Sunlit Visit
Setting: Cozy Maple Street Community Bookstore, Saturday morning. Sun filters through oak window panes, shelves lined with paperbacks, potted succulents by the register.
Dialogue & Scene
Lila arranges new poetry collections on the front shelf, humming a soft folk song under her breath. The bell above the front door tinkles. Elias steps in, carrying a woven basket full of tiny seedling pots, soil dust dusted lightly on his canvas overalls.
Elias (smiling, voice warm): Good morning! I came to pick up that gardening essay collection I reserved last week.
Lila’s heart flutters lightly; she straightens the stack of books in front of her, a soft easy smile tugging her lips.
Lila: Morning Elias! It’s right here behind the register, I set it aside yesterday just for you.
She hands over the thick paperback, fingers barely brushing his. Elias tucks the book into his basket, nodding gratefully.
Elias: You’re always so thoughtful, Lila. I really appreciate you keeping it safe for me. How’s your painting going lately? I saw the watercolor landscapes you taped up by the front door last time I stopped by—they were stunning.
Lila’s cheeks flush pink, light and happy embarrassment, no awkward sadness.
Lila: Thank you, that means so much. I’ve been practicing more early mornings before opening the shop. Mostly painting the park down the road.
Mia pokes her head out from the back storage room, grinning at Lila’s subtle flustered expression, but keeps quiet to let them chat.
Elias: If you ever want fresh flowers or leafy green reference plants for your paintings, just swing by the nursery anytime. Everything’s free for you.
Lila: That’s such a sweet offer, I might take you up on it soon.
Elias waves lightly as he turns to leave.
Elias: Have a wonderful rest of your Saturday, I’ll see you next weekend!
After the door closes, Mia saunters over to the register, leaning against the counter.
Mia: Oh wow, that smile you had just now? You’re glowing. He really has no clue how fond you are of him, huh?
Lila flips open her small sketchbook hidden under the counter, revealing a tiny quick drawing of Elias holding plant seedlings, soft pencil lines. She traces the outline gently, completely calm and joyful.
Lila: It’s okay if he doesn’t know. Talking to him already makes my whole day brighter. I don’t need anything more than these little nice moments.
Mia squeezes her shoulder supportively.
Mia: That’s such a lovely way to look at it. Most people would mope about one-sided crushes, but you turn it into something gentle and happy.
Lila gazes out the window at Elias’s retreating figure walking toward his nursery down the street, her expression warm and peaceful.
