CHAPTER NINETEEN

255 Words
Tearing Us Apart They took Cole in cuffs. I screamed. “This is a mistake!” But he didn’t fight it. “Call the lawyer,” he said, calm as ever. Back at the hotel, I fell apart. First, me. Now him. Vanessa’s final revenge. Hours passed. Cole’s lawyer called. “They’re holding him without bail for now.” “What’s the charge?” “Assisting in financial crimes. Vanessa claims she was working for him.” “She’s lying!” “We need more than just your word.” I paced the room. I had to find something—anything. Jordan called. “There’s a thumb drive hidden in Cole’s safe. It could clear him.” I raced to the penthouse, broke into the safe, and grabbed it. Inside: emails between Vanessa and a mystery buyer. She’d planned to frame Cole all along. But there was more. A confession video—Vanessa talking to someone on a call. Saying it all. I sent it to the lawyer. “Let’s hope it’s enough.” It was. By the next morning, Cole was released. He came straight to me. “I thought I lost you,” I cried. “You’ll never lose me.” We collapsed into each other. That night, he held my face in his hands. “I don’t want to waste another second.” He pulled out a new ring. Not a drunken one. A real one. “Marry me. For real. Forever.” And this time, I whispered— “Yes.”
