One Reckless Night
The music inside the ballroom was loud enough to drown out bad decisions. Elena Hart adjusted the silver mask covering half her face as she stepped deeper into the dazzling hall, immediately regretting agreeing to this. Crystal chandeliers glowed overhead. Women in glittering gowns laughed beside billionaire heirs and powerful CEOs. Expensive perfume filled the air while waiters carried trays of champagne through the crowd. Everyone here belonged. Except her. “You look hot. Stop panicking.” Sophia’s voice crackled through the phone pressed against Elena’s ear. “I shouldn’t be here,” Elena muttered under her breath. “These people probably spend more on watches than I make in a year.” “That’s exactly why you SHOULD be there,” Sophia argued dramatically. “Besides, I already paid for the ticket before I got sick. If you leave, I’ll haunt you.” Elena sighed. “You’re impossible.” “And you’re overdue for one reckless night. Go have fun.” The call ended before Elena could protest again. She slipped her phone into her purse and glanced around awkwardly. This entire place screamed wealth. The women looked like models. The men looked like they owned entire countries. Meanwhile, Elena was wearing a borrowed black dress and heels that were currently destroying her feet. She should leave. Right now. But before she could escape toward the exit, someone crashed into her shoulder. Champagne splashed across the front of her dress. “Oh my God—” “I’m sorry.” A deep masculine voice interrupted her. Elena froze. The man standing in front of her was tall—easily over six feet—with broad shoulders hidden beneath a perfectly tailored black suit. A dark mask covered the upper half of his face, but it did nothing to hide the intensity of his gaze. His eyes were dangerously beautiful. Sharp. Calm. Controlled. The kind of eyes that looked at you once and remembered everything. “I should’ve watched where I was going,” he said smoothly. Elena swallowed hard. “It’s fine.” The stranger took a napkin from a passing waiter and handed it to her. Their fingers brushed briefly. Heat rushed through her instantly. Weird. Very weird. “Let me replace the drink,” he offered. “That’s not necessary.” “It wasn’t a request.” Elena blinked. The audacity. But before she could argue, he guided her toward the quieter private lounge upstairs. Strangely enough, she let him. Inside, the noise from the ballroom faded into soft music and dim lighting. The stranger handed her a fresh glass of champagne before loosening his tie slightly. “You look uncomfortable,” he observed. “I am uncomfortable.” A faint smirk touched his lips. “At least you’re honest.” Elena sat carefully across from him. “You don’t seem like you belong here either.” That earned her a quiet laugh. Interesting. A man like him didn’t seem like the laughing type. “And what makes you think that?” he asked. “You look bored.” His eyes darkened slightly. “I usually am.” For some reason, that answer made her curious. Everything about this man felt controlled. Calculated. Like he spent his entire life hiding behind walls nobody could climb. “So why come?” Elena asked softly. The stranger leaned back against the couch. “Obligation.” She understood that feeling more than she wanted to admit. For the next hour, conversation flowed surprisingly easily between them. They talked about everything and nothing. Work. Dreams. Regrets. Elena found herself laughing more than she had in months. And the stranger—whoever he was—watched her like he was memorizing every expression on her face. It should’ve made her nervous. Instead, it made her pulse race. “You still haven’t told me your name,” he said eventually. “Neither have you.” “Maybe I asked first.” Elena smiled slightly behind her glass. “Maybe I don’t give my name to strangers.” His gaze locked onto hers. “Maybe I don’t want to stay strangers.” The tension between them thickened instantly. Elena looked away first. Dangerous. This man was dangerous. Not because he was cruel. Because she could already feel herself getting attached. And she didn’t even know him. A slow song began drifting from downstairs. The stranger stood before extending his hand toward her. “Dance with me.” Elena stared at him. “I’m terrible at dancing.” “I’ll survive.” She laughed softly despite herself before placing her hand in his. The moment he pulled her against him, her breath caught. Too close. Way too close. One of his hands settled carefully against her waist while the other held hers firmly. He smelled expensive. Clean. Addictive. Elena’s heart pounded painfully as they moved slowly beneath the dim golden lights. “You keep looking at me like you’re trying to figure me out,” she whispered. “Maybe I am.” “And?” “And I think you’re hiding.” The words hit too close to home. Elena stiffened slightly. The stranger noticed immediately. “You don’t have to tell me anything,” he said quietly. Something about his voice made her chest ache unexpectedly. Nobody had spoken to her gently in a very long time. “You know the funny thing?” Elena murmured. “I almost didn’t come tonight.” “And now?” Her eyes lifted to his. “Now I’m glad I did.” For the first time that evening, his carefully controlled expression cracked. Just slightly. But enough for her to notice. The stranger brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear slowly. The intimacy of the gesture sent heat flooding through her entire body. “Elena,” he said softly. Her eyes widened. “I never told you my name.” “No,” he replied calmly. “But your friend shouted it across the phone earlier.” Embarrassment rushed through her. “You were listening?” “You were loud.” She narrowed her eyes. “You’re annoying.” “And yet you’re still here.” Before she could answer, his phone suddenly buzzed. The warmth in his expression disappeared instantly. Cold. Sharp. Untouchable. He declined the call without even checking it fully. Important. Whoever this man was, people needed him. Expected things from him. Demanded things from him. “You should answer that,” Elena said. “I don’t want to.” The honesty in his voice startled her. For a moment, he didn’t look like a powerful man. He looked exhausted. Lonely. And somehow that made her want to stay beside him longer. A dangerous mistake. But tonight already felt unreal. Like stepping into someone else’s life for a few stolen hours. “One reckless night,” Elena whispered mostly to herself. The stranger’s eyes darkened. “What?” She shook her head quickly. “Nothing.” But he kept staring at her like he wanted every secret she carried. Every fear. Every hidden scar. And for the first time in years… Elena felt seen. The music slowed further around them. Neither of them moved apart. The stranger lowered his head slightly. “Tell me to stop.” Elena’s pulse thundered. She should. Absolutely should. Instead, her fingers tightened slightly against his suit. The corner of his mouth lifted faintly before he kissed her. Soft at first. Careful. Like he was testing whether she would pull away. But the moment Elena kissed him back, something inside him snapped. His hand tightened possessively around her waist as the kiss deepened. Hot. Dangerous. Addictive. Elena’s mind blurred completely. And somewhere deep down, she already knew this night was about to change her life forever.
