The sound of glasses clinking hit the dark, airy night. “Cheers to Edward being appointed as the new CEO of the HQ!” “Cheers.” The little gathering of friends, close business acquaintances, and family echoed. Grandmother didn't seem exactly pleased, but in time she would understand why he was best suited for the position. “The person you are cheering for isn't even on the table? Where's your husband?” Grandmother asked. I searched around and saw Edward's seat was indeed absent. Jane, my half-sister, a senior manager at the company's HQ, was also absent. “Let me search for him.” I excused myself and walked out in the night, enjoying how beautiful the starry nights were due to the location of our vacation home. Seated on a mountainous plain, just at the edge of a cliff with one of the most splendid views of nature. This should be a beautiful night for late-night walks for couples. A beautiful night to tell him I was pregnant with our first child. I rubbed my belly fondly. I was about to walk past the cliff drop toward the back of the house when I heard muffles and chuckles. I stopped in my tracks and saw two familiar figures hidden in the darkness. Edward and Jane? What are they doing here? I was about to call out to them cheerfully when I saw Edward move oddly to her. His finger tucked underneath her chin, he captured her face and leaned in closer to brush a kiss on her lips. I stood in awe. Stunned and utterly confused if I saw right. “Thank you for giving me the best gift in the world.” He rubbed her belly fondly, love burning in their eyes. What the hell was happening right in front of me? I choked back my tears, trying all I could to be silent. “We should thank Elaine more. You are the CEO now; you have access to the generational wealth her sick grandmother hoarded solely for her. Our child will get what I was rightfully denied.” I folded my fist till my nails dug into my palms. Disgusting sick bastards. It was all for the money all along. Edward was never in love with me. He always had his eyes on her. The business trips with 'senior manager Jane' were to implant his fuc'king seed into her womb. My palms resounded into a loud clap, startling both of them. “I must say both of you have deceived me with your faux performances of a caring sister and a loving husband. You both deserve an Oscar.” I walked forward, smiling bitterly at their pale, ashen faces. Edward tried to withdraw from Jane, but Jane had her elbows rather tightly clocked around his arms. Jane's expression contorted into one of pure hate. “Elaine, you should have made your presence known instead of hiding in the dark.” I scoffed, looking at the man I had given my heart to for three years. Weak and spineless, unable to utter a word in my presence. “Like how you hid with my husband and cheated on me all these years. You should quit with the projections.” “And Edward? Have you grown dumb? Cat got your tongue? Fuc'king pathetic excuse for a man. I should have listened to Grandmother!” He pushed Jane aside, a shocked look enamored on her face, and rushed to my side. “Elaine…” He tried to reach for me, but I drew from his reach. “This is a mistake. I am sorry. I have nothing going on with Jane; please believe me.” I looked at him with pure spite. “Your life is about to be a mistake, Edward. Everything you have ever known and loved is about to be a mistake. You had better get ready.” I was about to walk out on both of them when Jane blocked my path. Her green eyes shone with a new glint. One that promised me harm. “You sound so confident; you are going to leave here alive.” I glared at her. “You are pathetic, Jane, even more so pitiful that you are resorting to petty threats such as this one.” “Edward!, Listen to me. We have worked too hard to let it go to waste. Once Elaine goes back to her grandmother, your new position, your marriage, everything will be over. Also, remember the prenuptial agreement you had with her. You'll be in debt trying to pay her back. Our child, you can't do this to our child.” I scoffed in disbelief, my heart in fear as Edward walked forward. His eyes were laser-focused on me. I gazed back and noticed I was a few meters from the drop of the cliff. I ignored his piercing gaze and easily pushed past Jane, causing her to stumble. I was about to walk past Edward as well when his hands held my wrist back in a rather tight grip. My heart raced wildly, and I stared at him in fear. “What the fuc'k do you think you are doing? Let me go this instant!” “I have read about the benefits a widower would get from a dead rich spouse like you. I'm sorry, Elaine.” He smirked and pushed me back on the hard dirt; I grazed my knee in the process, a whimper escaping my lips. “Cowards! You can't kill me. You will live to regret it; I'll fuc'king make sure of it.” Jane chuckled, “From where? Your grave?“ She eyed the cliff. “A fall from up here would be disastrous. I'll make sure to retch my guts out when they bring your deformed body up.” A tear slipped down my face. A scream would do me no good. The house was too far away, and with the music, it might blur out my voice. I searched the floor for anything that might be useful to me for my defense and found a stone. When Edward leaned in on me to lift me, I hit him hard with the stone, enough to cause him to bleed out. “Argh! f*****g b***h!” He yelled out in pain and cursed at me, clutching at his bleeding head. Jane, infuriated, rushed to him to observe his injury. My ankle was unfortunately twisted and gave out in my only opportunity to run. Tears fell on my face from the pain. Jane turned her head at me and walked to me. Without warning, she put her whole weight on my broken ankle, stepping on it with her heeled boots. I cried out in pain and caught her ugly hair filled with extensions, tugging it hard, which caused her to scream out in pain. “You are going to fuc'king pay, Jane, in this life or my next. You will pay. Both of you!” I limped forward with my good leg, but it wasn't enough to fully get away from the cliff edge. Edward clenched his jaws, his gaze burning at me. “That's enough playing! Show us truly what you are made of in your next life. For now, die, b***h!” And he pushed me. My body fell off the cliff like a leaf drifting around on a windy day. Jane was glued to Edward as they watched me fall to my death. A smile on her face. A sharp breath was cut off from my lungs as I fell on the hard rocks. I shut my eyes tightly as I welcomed death, but the next second I had them open to bright white lights blinding me temporarily. *** My lungs dragged in the air, and my eyelids were forced to flicker open. My heart raced thunderously, and my palms were clammed with sweat. I blinked and noticed my surroundings were different. The silence, the burning church incense drifting in the background, and a priest murmuring vows. “I do,” Edward murmured in front of me, draped in a familiar Armani suit. His brown eyes were filled with so much love. My heart thrummed erratically; was this a dream? I was just killed by the man standing in front of me. How did I get here on our wedding day? “Do you?” He nudged me, “Elaine! It's your turn to say your vows.” My heart burned at the sight of him; the urge to pluck out his eyes from his eye socket was hard to resist. I was somewhat glad to be transported back to on our wedding day, I could nip my mistakes in the bud. I remained unresponsive; he looked around, embarrassed. “Say the fuc'king vows.” So you would fuc'king kill me again and cheat on me with my evil half-sister. Never! Not this time. I slammed the bouquet on the floor, the gasps of the guests echoing in the church hall. His last words to me before my death rang in my head. ... Show us truly what you are made of in your next life. For now, die, b***h! Without giving it a thought, I slapped him hard in the face. “I fuc'king will.” I threw my veil away and ran off the altar, ignoring the calls of Grandmother. Tears fell readily down my face as I recalled my unborn child had died with me in the fall. They killed my baby. I rushed out of the church, welcoming the cool breeze of freedom; my tears caused my vision to be blurry, and I couldn't see where I was headed. The next thing that resounded in my ears was the sound of car horns; I realized I was in the middle of the road. A car stopped right before me without hitting me, but a sudden wave of weakness flooded my head, and I struggled to keep conscious. About to faint from the stress of it all, I fell right into the arms of a gentleman. His familiar face was quite remarkable with his chiseled jaw and piercing gray eyes, but that's all I could remember. “Elaine, stay with me.” His lips muttered my name in the most buttery flow. I felt my weight being lifted off the floor, and I welcomed darkness in his cradle.
