"What do you mean you can't find her?" I asked, inflamed by the thoughts of anything happening to Elaine.
"Forgive us, sir, for our carelessness. Ms. Elaine told us the previous night she wouldn't stay long. She simply wanted to drink and would be out in an hour's time. But she never came out of the bar. We searched for her, and we could not find her."
"Your excuses won't stand! If anything happens to her, you will be held responsible for gross neglect of your jobs."
They lowered their eyes downcast, in fear over what the consequences of Ela being missing for over twelve hours might be.
