Workplace Rants
So okay, I got scolded by my boss today, which, by the way, wasn't my fault. I guess he got one-sided with that one.
I will explain briefly about my workplace. The company I work in offers furniture making and installation at the same time. As for our departments, we have that department that focuses solely on the planning and design of furniture. Let's call them the Planning and Design Department. We also have a department where the furniture is produced. Let's call them the Production Department. Then we have a department where the furniture is installed at the client's place. Let's call them the Implementation Department. While I am in a department that focuses on if the company's processes are followed, let's call it the Conformity Department.
So we have projects that have endorsed and are a bit of a rush. Well, they were urgent since we had to start the installation after two weeks. The Production Department were in doubt about the projects endorsed by the Management. The projects were on a larger scale and it wasn't just one, nor two, nor three, but five projects. Yes, FIVE PROJECTS. They have to produce a set of furniture in less than two weeks for five projects. When I say a set of furniture that includes tables, chairs, closets, countertops, etc. - depends on the area of the house. To top it all off, the Planning and Design already had the initial details for the furniture but it wasn't finalized yet. They still needed to reproduce the final layout for the Production Department. Talk about work pressure!
Today, we were in our 5th endorsement from the Planning and Design. Here's where it all started. They finished the layout for the Production Department at almost noon. Before the Production Department produces the products, it has to go double check through the Conformity Department. It wasn't explained to me really why the layouts had to go through the Conformity Department when it could just really go straight to the Production Department. After all, those two departments always coordinate regarding projects and not involving the Conformity Department. By the way, the Conformity Departments only get involved with the project if there is non-conformity, we issue reports and complaints. As I was checking the layouts, the Implementation Department had a non-conformity and needed my help - this is the Job Description I signed for, not the layout checking. Since it was already lunch break, we agreed to continue the work after the break.
Time to get back to work! So I started with the report on non-conformity. I asked the Planning and Design if they would be endorsing another project today. They said that was the last one. So I kinda told them, "I'll do it later then. I'll just make the Nonconformity Report." So I started the investigation. I asked all the personnel involved about that incident. I can't just make a report on a one-sided story now, can I? I have to ask everyone in order to have the correct conclusion. It almost took me two hours just to gather the information. As I was about to write the report, the Implementation asked me if we could just postpone the report since they have found a solution to the incident. In my opinion, I would really much like to produce that report since it was a major incident for me. The downfall of that is, whoever was involved in that incident would likely be charged or penalized. I am a kind person, really. So we agreed not to make a report.
I went back to the layout checking. Here comes the Management, checking the status of the ongoing projects. I never got to hear their conversation. All I know is that they were talking about some changes to a project. I was so focused on the layout checking since I had to endorse it to the Production Department. After all, it is still an urgent project. Suddenly, my boss approached a table that was next to mine and grabbed a pen. Then he asked, "Is this still working?" while trying to write on a used paper. I just answered,"I think it's not working anymore sir." After all, I knew that the pen wasn't working anymore. So I offered him another pen. It was mine and has black ink. He refused and said,"I need a red one." Then I remembered my colleague left a pen buried under her papers and grabbed it. I wrote on the used paper to check if it was working. Well, it was working but the ink was already light. I told him, "We have a red one sir, but it is a bit light." He suddenly got mad and went to another table. He then added, "Throw those away. Stop displaying those just for props."
"He was old.", I just said to myself, but MEN! I was really furious. I mean, I was kind to him. In the first place, it wasn't even my table! So I sat back on my chair and finished the layout checking really quickly. I was in a total daze.
Someone from the Planning and Design Department approached me and asked,"Is the layout finished yet?" Well, duh, it wasn't, with all that series of events happening, how can I focus on the checking? I just answered politely, "No, not yet. I was busy with the conformity report before I started the checking." He just smiled awkwardly and said, "Ah yes! yes! right!" then he left. Miraculously, I finished the checking and submitted the layout an hour after that. I had to return the Planning and Design logbook every time I finished checking a layout. I just usually write my signature and the date. Minutes had passed, the same guy from the Planning and Design approached me and asked, "What time did you finish the checking? Can we also log it?" I just answered him,"Around 3:30 in the afternoon."
"I see. Can we also log it? Same with our previous transactions." then he started flipping the pages from the logbook.
"Sure, but I don't recall ever needing it for the time." I just answered. It really puzzled me, why the sudden changes? He kept on scanning the logs with the time written on them but he could not find any. Of course he wouldn't, it wasn't even part of the process to begin with. Then I suddenly heard him utter, "It's to track how long the layouts are in here."
Wait, what? 'how long the layouts are in here' ? Did I hear it right? Do they want to pin the fault on me? My emotion suddenly rose and it just wanted to explode. I was really about to cry but he was still there scanning the logbook for a time log. Just to make him disappear from my sight, I told him "I will just start with it. Give it to me and I'll write the time." He then backed off and smiled awkwardly again. "No no. It's okay." then he left. What was that about?
It then occurred to me, the Planning and Design and the Management were just talking about the projects before I had the time to finish checking the layout. They were discussing its progress. I had a gut feeling that they were cornered and just put the blame on me. No wonder the old man was already angry at me. It really left me in a daze for the rest of the afternoon.
We were all ready to go home. I was left in the office to check if there were equipment and outlets left on and unplugged. The head of the Production Department was still at his table, making the Daily Progress. I was depressed so I kinda told him something just to lessen the burden I felt.
"Sir, would you be so kind as to tell me if the layouts are taking so long in our possession?"
He then just asked, "What time was the 5th project endorsed to you?"
"Almost lunch break."
"I see. That's ok."
It just made me even more depressed. I mean, how on earth did he know I was referring to the 5th project? I mean, sure, it was the only project I endorsed that day, but I was asking it in a general way. Was that too obvious? Or did he already know about the conflict that happened? It just made me worse, so I bid goodbye and left.
