Prologue - Victoria POV
As I stood amidst the swirling colours and elegant gowns at my father Mateo's grand ball, the strains of classical music filled the air, a symphony of sophistication that masked the whirlwind of emotions within me. My dear friends, Marie, Arabella and Juliet, surrounded me, each with their own sparkle of excitement as we excitedly whispered and laughed, eager for the evening ahead. “Look at the way those chandeliers glimmer,” Marie pointed out, twirling a strand of her hair nervously. “Just like something out of a fairy tale.” Arabella smirked in response, her gaze scanning the opulent ballroom. “Or perhaps a horror story if we have to endure a dozen marriage proposals tonight.” I chuckled, but deep down, I felt a mix of anxiety and anticipation. Tonight was special; it wasn’t just any ball. Darius, the Crown Prince of Celestria, would be here. Our secret meetings over the past few months had been a whirlwind of stolen moments and quiet laughter, hidden away from the watchful eyes of our kingdoms. Just then, the atmosphere shifted. The crowd collectively held its breath as Darius entered the room, flanked by his friends Aidan and Liam. He exuded an aura of confidence, his dark hair perfectly tousled and sharp features illuminated by the soft glow of the chandeliers. A ripple of gasps surged through the attendees, many whispering, their eyes glued to him as if he were a new star in the night sky. “Wow,” Juliet breathed, eyes wide. “He’s even more handsome than I imagined.” As I watched him stride gracefully across the room, my heart raced. His piercing gaze scanned the crowd until it found me and in that moment, the world outside faded away. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth, promising a secret reunion. “Victoria! Look.” Marie nudged me, her excitement palpable. “He’s coming this way!” Darius took a few confident steps toward me, but then I watched his friend Aidan lean over and whisper something into his ear. Darius faltered, his expression shifting from joy to something darker, more conflicted. What could they be discussing that would cause him to stop? “What the…” I mumbled, feeling my heart sink as he turned away, drawn back into the crowd. My breath caught in my throat. “What just happened?” Arabella asked, her brow furrowed in concern. “I… I uhm no idea.” I replied, trying to remain composed. I glanced over at Marie and Juliet as they exchanged confused looks. Without thinking, I slipped away from the throng of people, feeling the laughter and chatter fade behind me. I stepped outside onto the balcony, gripping the railing as the cool night air wrapped around me like a soothing embrace. With a heavy sigh escaping my lips, I closed my eyes, willing my heart to calm. Why had he turned away? Hadn’t our moments together been genuine? “Enjoying the view?” a smooth voice cut through my thoughts. I opened my eyes to see Adrian, leaning casually against the doorframe with a creepy smile that felt intrusive. “Adrian, I uhm—” I began, but he interrupted me. “You look exquisite as always Victoria.” he said, stepping closer. His gaze lingered a little too long and I instinctively recoiled, my stomach churning. “Thank you. Uhm Adrian what did you say to Darius?” I inquired. “Forget about Darius Victoria, how about you think of me instead.” “No thank you. Excuse me.” I said flatly, trying to brush past him, but he blocked my path, leaning in closer. “Come on, I am way more fun than he is.” he urged, his tone playfully insistent. “Okay, you’re crossing the line now. Please move out of my way.” I insisted, my patience wearing thin. “No, I think I should kiss you, don’t you think?” His eyes sparkled with mischief, but I saw an undercurrent of desperation. “No!” I snapped and before I could think, I pushed him back. “I don’t want that from you!” Frustration twisted his features and before I could react, he leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. Shock coursed through me and I shoved him away with force. “What the heck was that?” I gasped, anger bubbling within me. At that moment, Darius stepped out onto the balcony, his expression dark as he took in the scene before him—Adrian’s smirk, my shocked expression and the distance between us. “Wow Victoria!” Darius's voice cut through the tension, sharp and accusing. “I really didn’t think Adrian was right about you.” I felt the ground slip beneath my feet. It was like a punch to the gut, his words hitting harder than I expected. “Darius! Please listen—” “Listen to what?” he fired back, his voice low and full of hurt. “You lie about his lips touching yours?!” “Darius he came onto me. I have been trying to leave.” I cried out in desperation. “Do you really expect me to believe you aren’t just like the rest?” He sneered. “No! It’s not like that!” “It’s not? So my eyes are fooling me?” he asked, stepping closer, fury mingled with sorrow in his eyes. “I was foolish enough to think you were different. That we were special!” “We are Darius!” I exclaimed, my voice breaking. “I love you!” But Darius shook his head, his expression resolute as he backed away from me, each step feeling like a knife twisting deeper. “I can’t be here, not with you.” My heart shattered as he turned away, exiting through the doors. I was left standing frozen, the cool night air now feeling unbearably cold. Adrian watched Darius retreat, a smug smile creeping onto his face. “Looks like you’ve lost your prince.” he quipped, but I hardly registered his words. I took a deep breath, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill over. My heart was heavy, weighed down by confusion and disappointment. With a shaking hand, I wiped a stray tear away, then turned back toward the ballroom, my legs moving almost automatically.
