Chapter 4 - NOT YOURS

1248 Words
“You’re my mate.” The words hung in the air, heavy and absolute, like they were law. But Lian just stared at him, his heart hammering in his chest, every instinct screaming at him to run — and every fiber of his being refusing to be owned. “Say something,” Kaelen said, his voice rough with something like desperation. “Lian —” “So that’s it?” Lian stepped back, his hands curling into fists at his sides. “I’m your mate, so suddenly I’m yours? Just like that?” Kaelen’s brow furrowed, confused by his resistance. “It’s not just some claim I’m making. It’s the bond. It’s fate. It’s —” “It doesn’t give you the right to treat me like something you bought.” Lian’s voice shook, but he didn’t back down. “You said it yourself. I was a gift. A bargaining chip. And now that you know what I am — now that I’m something more valuable — I’m yours? Is that all I am to you? Something to possess?” Kaelen stepped forward, closing the space between them in one long stride. “You don’t understand what this means. Being mated to an Alpha like me — it changes everything. You will be protected. No one touches you, No one threatens you, No one dares come near you without answering to me.” “Protected or locked up?” Lian shot back, his eyes flashing. “You think because we share a bond, I’ll just let you make every decision for me? You think I’ll be quiet and obedient and do whatever you say just because your instincts tell you I belong to you?” “I’m talking about keeping you safe,” Kaelen said, his voice dropping, sharpening. “You have no idea what’s out there. No idea what people would do to get their hands on an Omega like you — especially one bonded to me. My enemies are your enemies now. And that means you stay close. You stay where I can see you. You don’t go anywhere without my permission.” Lian stared at him, stunned. “Your permission?” “Until I know who’s hunting you — until I know exactly what your family sent you into — yes. My permission.” Kaelen reached out, his hand hovering near Lian’s arm, like he wanted to touch him but knew better. “The bond doesn’t change who I am, Lian. It doesn’t suddenly make me a different man. I’m still the head of this family. I still make the rules. And as my mate — you follow them.” The words landed like a blow. Cold. Clear. Uncompromising. Lian pulled back, his face hardening. “So nothing changes. I’m still just… something you own. Except now it’s worse, because now you have fate on your side.” “I’m saying you have a place here. A status. Protection.” “Then don’t treat me like property.” The words were quiet — but they hit Kaelen like a physical force. He froze. His hand dropped to his side. For a long moment, he just stood there, staring at Lian like he’d just spoken in a language he didn’t understand. No one spoke to him like that. No one challenged him. No one looked him in the eye and told him he was wrong. And certainly not someone who had been sent to him as a bargaining piece. “I —” Kaelen started, then stopped. He blinked, as if trying to process the words. “I don’t —” “If I’m your mate,” Lian said, his voice steady now, fierce and sure, “then I’m your equal. Not your pet. Not your prize. Not something you lock away because it’s convenient. If this bond means anything, it means we’re partners. Or it means nothing at all.” Kaelen stood completely still. The possessiveness, the certainty, the Alpha arrogance — it all faltered, just for a second. He looked at Lian — really looked at him — and for the first time, he didn’t see an Omega. He didn’t see a gift. He didn’t see a secret. He saw someone who would not be broken. Someone who would not bend. Someone who was every bit as strong as he was — just in a different way. “I’ve never…” Kaelen began, then paused, his voice lower, softer. “I’ve never had to think about it like that. In my world — mates are cherished. They’re guarded. They’re kept safe. That’s how we show we care.” “Safe doesn’t mean owned,” Lian said. “And I’m not going to be yours on those terms. Not ever.” Kaelen took a slow breath, his gaze searching Lian’s face. “You’d… reject the bond? Even knowing what it means? What it could give us?” “I’m not rejecting the bond.” Lian met his gaze evenly. “I’m rejecting your version of it. We can be tied together by fate all you want, Kaelen. But you don’t get to decide who I am. And you don’t get to decide my life for me. If you want me — if you want this — then you accept all of me. Including the parts that argue back. Including the parts that don’t do what they’re told.” Silence stretched between them. Heavy. Charged. Nothing like the quiet of before — this was different. This was respect. Kaelen let out a long, slow breath, and for the first time since Lian had met him, he looked truly, genuinely stunned. Not by the secret. Not by the scent. But by him. “You’re extraordinary,” Kaelen whispered, so quiet Lian almost didn’t hear it. Then he straightened, his expression shifting — still firm, but different now. Softer around the edges. “I don’t know how to do this, Lian. I’ve never had to be… anything other than what I am. But —” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “I’m willing to learn. If you are.” Lian’s heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected that. He’d expected anger. Demands. Orders. Not this. “But there are rules,” Kaelen continued, serious now. “Rules for your safety. Until I know who’s coming for you — until I know the full truth of why you were hidden and why you were sent here — I need you to trust me. Not because I own you. But because I want to keep you alive.” Lian hesitated. “And when we know the truth?” Kaelen took a step closer, his grey eyes clear and steady. “Then we decide together. What the rules are. What we are. Where we go from here.” He held out his hand — not a demand. An offer. “Do we have a deal?” Lian looked at his hand, then up at his face. The most dangerous man in Varencia was standing there — powerful, feared, untouchable — and he was asking. Not commanding. Asking. Slowly, Lian reached out and placed his hand in Kaelen’s. His skin was warm. His grip was firm — but careful. Like he was already learning. “Deal,” Lian said. Kaelen’s fingers closed around his. “Good. But for the record —” A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips. “You’re still going to be the death of me.”
