Chapter 1-The Gift
The elevator ride to the top of Vance Tower felt longer than the drive across the whole of Varencia City. Lian Hale stood with his hands clasped tightly behind his back, staring at his reflection in the black glass walls. He looked calm. Polite. Completely ordinary. The perfect, unremarkable gift. But beneath the collar of his crisp white shirt, his heart was hammering so hard he was certain anyone standing close enough would hear it. Breathe. Just breathe. He had never felt more like a lamb walking toward a slaughterhouse than he did right now. The elevator gave a soft chime. The doors slid open. Lian stepped out. The space before him wasn’t simply an office. It was a throne room. Seventy-two floors above the city, Kaelen Vance’s private office stretched across the top of the tower. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the glittering skyline of North Varencia, the countless lights below twinkling like fallen stars. Everything was black leather, dark wood, polished metal, and a heavy, expensive silence. The air smelled of ozone, old money, and something sharper. Something wild. And behind the massive obsidian desk, sitting in a chair that looked as unyielding as a throne, was the most dangerous man in the city. Kaelen Vance. He didn’t look up immediately. He was reviewing a stack of documents, a pen moving between his fingers with sharp, precise movements. His dark hair was cut short, his jawline carved from granite, his broad shoulders filling out a tailored black suit like armor. Even seated, he radiated a raw, overwhelming power that made the air feel thinner. To the rest of the world, he was the heir to the Vance Empire — one of the Seven Families that ruled Varencia from the shadows. The Vances controlled weapons, security, and enforcement. They were the family no one dared cross. To Lian, Kaelen was something much simpler. He was the Alpha who had just been given him. Like a box of imported wine. Like a piece of furniture. James Voss, Kaelen’s head of security and the man who had escorted Lian here, stepped forward. “The Hale offering, sir.” Kaelen finally lifted his head. His eyes were a pale, piercing grey — cold, unreadable, and completely indifferent. His gaze swept over Lian. Quick. Dismissive. As if he were inspecting a horse he’d been told to buy but had never wanted. “Hale’s gift,” Kaelen said, his voice low and rough, like gravel shifting beneath heavy boots. “And what am I supposed to do with him?” Lian’s throat went dry. He had been told not to speak unless spoken to. He had been told to be quiet. Obedient. Invisible. But he couldn’t just stand there in silence. Not after the journey. Not after everything. “I’m not a ‘him,’” he said. His voice came out steadier than he expected — soft, but clear. “I’m Lian Hale.” Kaelen’s eyebrows lifted slightly. A flicker of surprise. Or perhaps irritation. “He speaks.” “Apologies, sir,” Lian said, keeping his chin up rather than looking at his shoes. “I just thought you might prefer to know the name of the person your family accepted into your home.” James shifted beside him. His hand hovered near his weapon, clearly expecting Kaelen to snap Lian’s head off for the disrespect. But Kaelen merely leaned back in his chair. His pen tapped slowly against the desk. Click. Click. Click. The sound echoed through the quiet room. “Your father sent you here to secure an alliance,” Kaelen said, ignoring Lian’s introduction. “To keep the Vance and Hale families from tearing each other apart.” His gaze hardened. “That makes you a bargaining chip, Lian Hale. Bargaining chips don’t get to have opinions.” Lian’s fingers curled behind his back. The words landed like a blow to the chest. He knew it. He had always known it. But hearing Kaelen say it so plainly, so coldly… it still hurt. “I understand,” Lian said quietly. His voice didn’t break. “But I’m still here. And I’m still a person.” Kaelen stood. The movement was sudden, and Lian stepped back instinctively, his body reacting before his mind could catch up. Kaelen was tall — much taller than him — and as he walked around the desk, the atmosphere in the room seemed to shift. Then his scent reached Lian. Dark cedar. Storm clouds. Rain. The scent of a Prime Alpha — strong enough to make Lian’s knees weaken. Don’t react. Don’t let him smell it. Don’t let him know. Kaelen stopped directly in front of him, close enough that Lian had to tilt his head back to meet his eyes. He loomed over him, radiating a terrifying, suffocating presence. “Pretty thing,” Kaelen murmured. His gaze traveled over Lian again. “Soft. Too gentle for this world.” He tilted his head. “What did they think would happen? That I’d keep you in a glass case?” Lian held his gaze. “I can work. I can be useful.” “Useful.” Kaelen let the word hang between them, then turned away, waving a hand dismissively. “James.” “Sir.” “Put him somewhere. He can work in the private quarters — cleaning, organizing, whatever.” Kaelen returned his attention to the documents on his desk. “Just keep him out of my way.” It was the final dismissal. You are nothing. You do not matter. Lian felt humiliation burn behind his eyes. He swallowed it down — hard. He had known this would be the reality. He wasn’t here to be seen. He was here to be quiet. To avoid trouble. To hide. Lian turned and followed James toward the elevator. His hand had barely reached the elevator button when something happened. He didn’t know what triggered it. Maybe it was the stress. Maybe the fear. Maybe the overwhelming proximity of Kaelen’s pheromones. Or maybe his body had simply reached its limit. The small, translucent vial tucked inside his pocket slipped from his trembling fingers. Lian’s eyes widened. No. Not here. Not in front of him. The vial struck the marble floor. Crack. For one heartbeat, nothing happened. Then — it bloomed. Sweet. Warm. Impossibly rich. The scent of rain-soaked jasmine. Honey. Warmth. And something wilder. Something ancient. It didn’t simply fill the room. It exploded into the air, curling through Kaelen’s cedar-and-storm scent and wrapping around everything. Lian froze. The blood drained from his face. No. No, no, no. His secret was no longer a secret. James stopped dead. His eyes widened. “Sir…” He looked toward Kaelen. “That scent —” Kaelen didn’t move. He inhaled once — slowly, deeply — then again. His entire body went rigid. The indifference vanished from his face. Something darker replaced it. Sharper. More dangerous. Kaelen slowly turned toward Lian. The grey eyes that had been cold and empty moments ago were now burning with something Lian couldn’t understand. Lian couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t run. He couldn’t even move. His secret had spilled across the room like a confession. Kaelen took one step toward him. Then another. He stopped directly in front of Lian, his gaze sweeping over Lian’s face as though he were seeing him for the very first time. Then his hand rose. His fingers caught Lian’s chin, tilting his face upward. Firm. Unyielding. Lian’s breath caught. Kaelen’s voice dropped into a low, dangerous rumble. “You told them he was a Beta.” His eyes remained fixed on Lian. “But you’re not, are you?” Lian’s heart stopped. Kaelen leaned closer. His voice fell to a whisper. “Look at me.” Lian slowly raised his eyes. And for the first time, he saw something in Kaelen’s expression that frightened him more than anger ever could. Recognition.
