CHAPTER ONE
Anna (POV)
"Please, don't do this." I begged, my voice shaking in fear as I looked at the woman whom I had called mother for almost all my life. Bianca smiled like a wicked person. Her fingers held my arm so tightly. "Stop acting up, Anna. Lord Damian is ready to pay good money for you." My heart was beating fast… "I'm not some property you can sell off," I whispered. "You cannot do this." "Who said I cannot?" She dragged me forward, making me fall down. My knees hit the ground hard. "Your father died and left me with nothing except debt and you. At least now you will be useful for something."
My eyes were filled with tears, but I forced them back. I refused to cry. Not in front of her. Never again. The elevator made a noise at the end of the hallway. Lord Damian walked in with his expensive suit. From his looks, you could tell who he truly was… a wicked man. The way he looked at me made me feel very uncomfortable.
"Is this the girl?" His voice sounded so rough, harsh, and dirty.
I stood up quickly, but my legs were shaking. "I'm not going anywhere with you." Bianca slapped me hard on the face. The sound was loud. My face turned red, and I tasted blood. "You will do exactly what I say," she said. "Then you have to kill me first," I said. Lord Damian laughed. He brought out an envelope full of money. "She has fire. I like that." "No!" I moved back until I hit the wall. "What is going on here?" A new voice spoke in the hallway. Everyone stopped. A man stood at the other end: tall, with wide shoulders and very dark hair. But his eyes… cold silver… made me freeze. Power came from him like fire. Bianca quickly let go of my arm. Lord Damian’s face changed. "Alpha Alexandro," he said. "This is not your business." "Not my business?" Alpha Alexandro came closer. "Slavery is not allowed here. Have you forgotten?" "This is private…" "You are buying a person," Alpha Alexandro said, his voice growing deeper. "That is my business." I pressed harder against the wall. I had heard stories about
alphas…their power, their anger, what they could do.
Lord Damian's face turned red. "She agreed…"
"Did she?" Alpha Alexandro looked at me. "Did you agree?"
My mouth was dry. I shook my head.
"There is your answer," he said. He looked at Damian again. "Leave now, before I get angry."
Something in his voice made me afraid. Lord Damian felt it too. He put the money back and ran to the elevator. The doors closed.
"And you," Alpha Alexandro said to Bianca, "you tried to sell her."
Bianca's face went pale. "She's my stepdaughter. I can…"
"You cannot." He called out, "Guards. Take her now."
"Wait…" Bianca tried to move, but Alpha Alexandro raised his hand. She stopped as if something held her.
Two big guards came. They held Bianca.
"No! Anna, tell them! Tell them I was helping you!" she screamed, but the guards remained still.
"Take her to court," Alpha Alexandro said. "She tried to sell a person. Thirty strokes of the cane."
Bianca screamed as they took her away.
My legs were already weak. I sat on the floor.
Alpha Alexandro bent down.
"Are you hurt?" he asked.
I touched my hot face. "I'm fine."
Tears came down my face. I was tired of being strong.
"Hey," he said quietly. "You are safe now."
"Thank you," I whispered. "Thank you so much."
He stood up. "Go to the hospital. Let a doctor see you. The pack will pay."
He dropped his card and walked away. I sat there with shaking hands and a fast heart.
Alexandro(POV)
I looked at the papers on my desk, but nothing made sense. Another long night. More problems only I could solve.
Being Alpha meant everyone wanted something: peace talks, business, permission to cross our land.
Power comes with a price. Mine was being alone.
My door opened. My mother walked in… Lucia Romano. She never knocked.
"Mother," I said. "It's already midnight."
"You're still working," she said, sitting down. "That's why we must talk."
Here we go. I leaned back. "About what?"
"Your future. The pack's future." She tapped her nails. "You are twenty-eight. Every alpha your age has a child."
"I know."
"Then why…?"
"Because I'm cursed, Mother." My voice was hard. "I cannot have children. The prophecy says my family ends with me."
Pain showed in her eyes. She looked away. "Maybe it's wrong."
"Has it ever been wrong?"
She went to the window. All I have will go to someone else when I die.
"I'm offering money," she said quietly.
My chest felt tight. "What?"
"Ten million pounds to any she-wolf who gives you a child." She turned. "If the prophecy is true, no one will succeed. But if there's a chance…"
"No." I stood up fast. "Never."
"Every she-wolf who wants money will come. I won't know who is real."
"Then you'll know the truth," she said. "Better than people who act like they love you.”
I rubbed my face. She meant well. But this was crazy.
"The announcement goes out tomorrow," she said.
"Mother!"
"It's done." She went to the door. "I'm not asking you to love them. Just try. For the pack. For the family."
The door closed.
I was alone. Just me and the prophecy from 300 years ago:
The strongest alpha will have no children.
His power will fade.
Only true love can break it.
True love. Does it exist?
I have never believed in love…
