6. Silver

"Oh My Goddess, Jade! I'm so, so sorry this happened to you. If only we got to you faster." For some reason she looked sincerely heartbroken. Why did she care so much? Even though it was suspicious, there was something right about her worrying about me. I wanted someone to care for so long now, but my prayers and pleads never came true. Salvation never came. Or maybe it actually did. Maybe those people saved me? "Jade, would you like to talk about it? After all, I have a degree in Psychiatry." - she offered, once again smiling at me. Those warm green eyes were telling me I could trust her, but even so those memories will die with me. I shook my head, letting her know I'm not ready. " Ok, I get it, you still need time to trust us. But are you interested in knowing what your blood told us?" - she said once again calmly. Was I really interested? I knew what they did to me, and I'm not so sure if I want details. But she did mention that some of the things they gave me were deadly, maybe it would be wise to find out what to avoid in the future. "Tell me." - I answered shortly, when curiosity won with my self preservation instinct. "Samples were taken just before you were sedated by me, so that's how I know it was humans who did this to you. Basically your blood has the whole Mendeleev's table in it, but what concerns me the most was wolfsbane is such a big dosage that you shouldn't be able to contact your wolf till New Year's yet you are able to talk with her, is that correct?" - I nodded, and hearing this Iri started growling in my head and I knew she was angry -" But that's not the worst part. Yes, wolfsbane is harming our wolves, but it's mainly to weaken us once it leaves our system we're back to normal without any permanent damages. But what's the most dangerous for us is actually silver. We can't even have skin contact with it and not get harmed, yet somehow you have a lot of it in your blood. Do you have any idea how it got there?" "Silver? Like the shining metal?" - I asked confused. How the hell did metal get into my blood? "Yes, it leaves permanent scars on our body and burns our skin. But there are few kinds of liquid forms of it, so my guess is they pomped it into you. Do you remember humans giving you any extremely painful injections or drip?" I thought about it for a while, because everything they did was rather hard to bear, and indeed one thing was worse than all the rest. "There was something, Summers called it my daily juice, and I almost always lost my consciousness after it, but every day they gave me a little bit more of it." Connie had horror in her eyes. Like I've said the worst thing she heard in her life. "They gave it to you every day?" - she whispered in disbelief, and I responded with a nod. She started nervously brushing her blond hair with her hand. "How long have you been receiving it?" - she asked, still looking nervous which was out of her placid character. "I don't know… a year or something around it." - I said, doing my best to recall, but it was hard to say when every day looked exactly the same. "A YEAR?!" - she was livid. I haven't suspected that this nice lady can be this angry. I started backing away from the glass wall in fear. When she noticed that I'm scared she visibly calmed down. "I'm sorry Honey, I didn't mean to frighten you. It's just… so cruel! You could have died. Frankly speaking you should have been dead." "Yeah, I know. I've heard this a lot, that monstrosity like me shouldn't ever be born." - I admitted bitterly. That's how it always was in hospital. They insulted me to the point that I started believing them that I'm worthless. I think that when you keep hearing something repeatedly it's becoming true eventually. "No, no. Jade, you're missing my point here. The thing they did to you… It would most likely kill any other wolf. I have no idea what it is that you haven't… die, maybe it's because you're partially human after your mother, but you have no idea how dangerous it is. I can show you if you want to see for yourself." - her gibbering didn't make any sense to me, so I once again nodded. While I'm here it's only fair to learn as much as I can, right? Connie's eyes became foggy once again like I saw them did before, and soon after she returned to her normal self. " What is it? That thing with your eyes?" "Oh, I was mindlinking one of our pack members." - she explained, but her words still haven't made any sense to me. "Could you elaborate." "Thanks to our Alpha - your father - we are all linked with each other, and we can contact one another by our thoughts. Just like you are speaking with your wolf." - she explained, and it actually sounded strange, like everything I learned here. "That's creepy. Why would you want someone to be in your mind?" She started chuckling at my remark. "No it's not like that. It's more like having a cell phone in your mind. Others can hear you only if you want them to." "Oh, in that case it's pretty cool. Can I do it?" "Yes, but you need to become an official member of this pack." I started thinking about her words. Was that something what I would like? To be a part of this community. Iri is extremely calm around that guy who claims to be my father. Connie seems to be nice too. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad to belong somewhere. I heard footsteps coming closer to my cell, and a few seconds later Connie was joined by a young boy, close to my age. He was undeniably handsome and well built with his dark blond hair, but he was a guy, and they are always a bad news. He looked me in the eyes, and then he bent in a low bow. "Alpha, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. My name is Blake Crawford, I'm your future Beta." That was a lot of information in two sentences, which said nothing to me. Connie spotted my confusion and saved me from that awkward situation. "Young Beta, stop smothering Jade. I called you here so Jade could understand what silver does to our kind. Would you mind showing us your wounds?" This guy Blake nodded and without another word took off his t-shirt. I respectively looked away and started blushing. "Look Jade, that's how silver affects us." Doc encouraged me to look again at shirtless Blake and when I came closer to the glass I noticed a fresh red scar on his ribcage, which looked like it was just healed. "I've got this in battle six months ago, I barely survived it." - he said and I could almost hear pride in his voice, like it was some kind of achievement to heal. But it's true the wound looked fairly new, it couldn't be made half a year ago. Again Connie came to my rescue. "Wounds made by silver weapons, no matter how small, don't close on their own. So it's almost always fatal, cause even beasts like us can't live without blood." I stand there shocked looking at them dumbfounded. "So how am I alive?" "That's a good question. Would you let me check something? And I must warn you it may be painful." I nodded. Connie opened a small hole through which I was receiving my meals. "Could you place your hand here?" - she asked and I obliged. She put out her hand and Blake gave her a big hunting knife. I instantly had a bad feeling about it, so I took my hand away. "Don't be afraid Jade, I won't harm you, but we need to know this." - I have no idea what it was about this woman, that I was ready to let her run those experiments on me, but both me and Iri felt safe with her. I hope that this won't be my last mistake. I placed one hand in the hole again and she put the blade flat to my skin. I felt light burning but in another second she took the knife away. "Amazing, you're immune." I looked at the place where she placed the blade and skin was a bit reddened in that spot, like after an allergic reaction but it started fading quickly. "What does it mean?" - I asked. "That the most deadly thing to any werewolf is not affecting you."
