5. Jade

"Your successor?! Crazy girl raised by humans? You don't have big expectations, don't you?" - I mocked him. That's the most ridiculous thing I heard so far, even more than werewolves. "Jane, let me explain…" - he started again. "I told you it's JD!" - I cut him off. He looked at me taken aback by my outburst. "Why exactly JD?" - he asked curiously. "Jane Doe, but it sounds better." "You cannot use your surname for unidentified people. Your real name is Balfour." - he announced. Oh that guy is pissing me off. "Why? Because a sperm donor showed up after 17 years?" - I saw his jaw clenching with anger. It seems that we both make each other equally agitated. "How about Jade? It sounds more like a name and you clearly don't like to be called Jane, this way both of us would win." - Connor proposed. I wanted to turn it down immediately, but it actually had a pleasant ring in it. Jade. I think I like it. I nodded and he smiled at me. "So tell me, why do you need your successor now? Why didn't you come for me when my mother died?" - his smile faded and I saw hurt in his expression. "I didn't know she was dead. After your mother moved out she cut me off. WhenI turned 18 and found my Mate. We had a son together. He was supposed to take after me." "So I have a brother? Why won't he take the job then?" - I asked the obvious folding my arms. Sorrow in Connor's eyes deepened. "He and his mother died last fall." I hung my head. It seemed that I had a brother. I wish I could have met him. How different could my life be if I had the opportunity to grow up here where apparently everybody is as crazy as I am with my own flesh and blood. But his intentions were still a mystery to me. "I'm sorry for your loss, but you haven't answered my question yet." He took another deep breath. "Pack must be led by an Alpha. And you are the last one from our clan. I'm getting weaker and my people will be defenseless soon. So basically my people need you." "Why are you getting weaker, are you sick or something?" "That's what is happening when one of us loses his fated Mate. We gain great strength thanks to them, but we can also get weaker or even die if they die." "What is that? You keep telling something about a Mate? Who is that?" "Mate is a one person you are supposed to be with. The one who is perfect for you. When you find each other and accept the bond you feel finally complete, but when you lose that person it's like the half of your heart has been ripped out. Most of us die as well, the rest like me get weaker till the point they are easy prey." That's too complicated for me. This all still feels like hallucinations. 'Iri, you there? Is what he says a truth?' - I tried the trick and asked the voice in my head. Ok, I might be really mental. I'm taking advice from my delusions. 'I'm not a delusion, and yes he is our father. I can feel it.' - Iri answered. 'What do you mean you can feel it? And why are you so calm all of a sudden, huh?' - but she didn't answer me. Guess I've offended her. Who would have known that you can insult something that's only in your head. Just when I thought about it I heard a low growling in my head. What the f**k?! "I see you are talking with your wolf." - Connor said bringing me back to reality. I nodded. "I'd like to meet her." - he added. "How?" - I asked. Did werewolves have some sort of possibility of looking into my mind? "When you'll change into your wolf form of course." I put my mouth into 'O' shape. That was kinda dumb question. I watched him for a while. "What if I won't agree? What if I don't want to stay here? Would you send me away back to that mental hospital where you've found me?" - I asked defensively. "No. But please reconsider, get to know our world. You are a part of it after all. In return you can ask me for anything that's in my power." "I'll think about it." - I said roughly. Connor nodded and left me alone yet again. I thought about all the things that had happened to me and those which I found out lately. I felt that my mind was still a bit clouded by all those pills they pumped into me. How can I be sure it's not another medication which is messing with my head yet again? Summers made sure to put me through a lot of those. That fucker! I lied down on my single bed and drifted to a slumber, but it felt like just when I closed my eyes I was woken up by tapping on my glass wall. I opened my eyes and I saw the concerned face of Connie. There was something in her that calmed me. She had this motherly aura surrounding her. "Alpha told me that you've settled with the name Jade." - she started and I just nodded - "It's beautiful. Good choice." "Thanks." - once again silence fell upon us. I could tell there was something bugging her, but she didn't know how to say it. After a few minutes of staring at me she finally spoke. "Jade, I get your blood results." - and she paused again. I started suspecting where she was heading with those questions. "You have in your system so many different chemical compounds, some even deadly for our kind that it makes me wonder…" - she stopped again like those words were too hard to escape her mouth. "Go on ask it." - I encouraged her. "Did they experiment on you?" - she finally asked in one breath like it was the most horrible thing she could have thought of. There was nothing left for me to do than to answer truthfully. "Yes."
