Theodore was taken from Nevis to Port Royal, Jamaica in the belly of an English warship. He was chained to the hull along with two other men also accused of piracy. The voyage, although a short one, was excruciating. Sailing near the equator in early summer made for severely oppressive conditions, especially below decks. Naked, except for the linen trousers he had worn on the day of his surrender, Theodore, along with his fellow prisoners, sweated and sweltered in the dank, smelly bowels of the ship. In the dark, he could hear the scurrying of rats.
