I CHECKED out from my work that evening with a quite light feeling and don't ask me, I don't know what feeling I am talking about. I entered the elevator quickly the seconds it’s opened and pressed the button to the lobby.
Mr Ceo had been out right after lunch for a business meeting and not coming back until office hour was over. Leaving me in the empty office all alone, answering to several phone calls and a few files to be taken care off.
All in all, today was not as hectic as my former job as Samantha’s assistant a few floors below. I released a relieve breath, feeling light and happy for the day.
I arrived at the lobby a few minutes later to be greeted by a man in an all-black suit. I raised my eyebrows slightly shocked when he gave me small nod.
“Ma’am, I am asked to escort you.” he said standing up straight.
“Me, why?” I replied pointing a finger to myself. His posture straighten before walked away from me quietly not even bother to answer my question. That was rude. I wondered who his boss is. Eventually, I followed him although I felt hesitate a little.
Ever heard of curiosity killed the cat? And now the cat was me. Yeay!
He stopped in front of a luxury car and proceeds to open the door for me.
“Sir, will be waiting at the diner.” he said courtly before walking to the driver seat and drove safely to an unknown location he called diner.
I nodded before I took my handphone and texted Tessa that I will be late tonight so she will be taking care of Emily while I was gone. I just wished this was not a series of kidnapping or anything.
I looked outside the window to an unfamiliar street, a higher class street may I add and sighed lightly. Whoever I am going to meet, I hope I will not be home too late tonight. I am a mother for God sake!
The car stopped after half an hour driving from the office and the door finally opened. Another man in the same black suit approached me.
“Sir was waiting for you upstairs.” he said with a little nod to me and pointed to the entrance of the diner. I quickly headed inside and went upstairs to an elite dining with separate booth with very fair distance within each table.
At one corner of the empty luxury restaurant, Derek was standing behind a table, with a single rose in his hand. I sighed. Why him?
“Good evening, Miss George,” he said formally handing me the red rose. I took the red rose just to put it back into the glass vase on the table with a smirk plastered on my face.
“My evening was not very good, thanks to you.”
He laughed lightly and pulled out a chair for me to sit. He was trying to be gentleman, I guessed. I mumbled quite thanks before he went to his chair in front of me.
“You know you just have to ask,” I said.
“Yes, and I am sure you will gladly refuse.” he replied. Unfortunately, I chuckled.
“Sure, absolutely.” I replied as the waiter came to us bringing our food, though I did not remember I had ordered any of them.
He dismissed the waiter quickly right then and cleared his throat. I noticed he take a sip of his plain water every once in a while.
“Emm, so tell me how your life was?” he asked but I was sure that was not his intentions of this secret dinner. I shrugged my body attempting to dismiss the topic.
Nothing were actually special this recent years, except for the fact that I was left alone in this whole world, with a simple short course of administration I took and supported by Nick for sure while carrying Emily for the whole ten months of pregnancy and supported myself with small amount of salary at a small cafe.
And of course, never forget about Selena who came back after a year, reminiscing our old memories and tried to merge me with my family again, of course, secretly. But then, me being me, she can never hide anything. I eventually knew about it when I heard her talked to my parents through her phone the other days.
To be honest, I actually don’t really have the times to think about that. My life rotates on a simple orbit every single day. From the early morning to late in the evening, everything was about taking care the only person that matter most to me. Emily, my daughter.
I looked at him one more time, thinking about the best answer I should tell him before I sighed.
“Its fine Derek, I am fine.” I answered, very short and a very not convincing answer. I was slowly losing my appetite.
“Steph, love, I am sorry.” was his replied. I stared deep into those sparkling grey eyes, searching for honesty and sincerity.
“Sorry for what?”
“I am sorry for everything.”
“Sorry can't make up the past.” I said played with the food in my plate.
“Love….” he said but I cut him off quickly.
“Don't call me love if you don't mean it.” he looked at me, shocked washed all over his face.
“What do you mean?”
“Der, you don't know anything. Do you even know what you are actually sorry for?” I asked furiously. My anger suddenly raised and I don’t know why.
I saw he was stunned by my remarks and probably lost for words. I sighed and threw my napkin on the table.
“I am done,” I said, standing up, leaving my unfinished food behind. He immediately stood.
“Steph, wait.” he said. I stopped abruptly.
“What do you mean I don’t know anything?” he asked.
Silence.
“Fine, then let me send you home.” he said again, leading us to the stairs.
Suddenly something clicked in my mind. Home. Emily.
“Just drop me to my car.” I replied quickly running down the stairs leaving him behind me.
He drove me off to the office silently without any conversation. Neither one of us make an attempt to talk. He was with his own little bubble where only god knows what, and I was with mine. Every memory of us replayed in my mind.
I never thought tonight will come by this soon. Maybe I was just unprepared for this encountered. Or I was just paranoid because old plain love was not really a reason to our relationship right now. It was about our daughter that he did not know was existed.
I just hope I had built a wall high enough to secure the only person I have now.
Emily Jane Valentino.
