Chapter 1: Jubilee Mall 23:40
I should have never taken that last shift at Jubilee Mall.
My manager said, "Lerato, just close up, there's a taxi still." It was 23:40. The mall was dark. The security guard had already left.
Outside, the taxi rank was empty. Cold wind from the cemetery side. Then I saw it — one white Quantum, engine running, lights on. Empty.
I ran. "Hammanskraal?" I shouted.
The driver smiled. Too wide. His teeth too white. "We've been waiting for you, Lerato."
I froze. How did he know my name? I never told him.
"Come. Last one. Free ride."
I was tired. My phone was at 2%. I got in. Front seat. Big mistake.
The door closed by itself.
He drove. Not towards the R101. He turned towards the old cemetery road — the road all drivers avoid at night.
"Why are we going this way?" I asked.
He didn't answer. He just smiled in the mirror. His eyes... they didn't blink.
Then at the cemetery gate, he stopped. And the back door opened.
Cold air entered. And people entered. One by one. An old woman with no feet, floating. A man with a bloody face. A school child with empty eyes.
They sat behind me. Silent. All looking at me.
The old woman leaned forward and whispered, "You should not have boarded, my child. This taxi does not go to Hammanskraal."
I looked at the driver. He was no longer smiling. His face was... changing.
And the taxi started moving again, but this time, not on the road. It was moving over the graves.
I tried to open the door. Locked.
My phone lit up: 00:00.
The driver said, "Final stop."
To be continued...
Would you have gotten into this taxi? Comment YES or NO.
