Chapter 28
Reed, who had been left behind at the bar by Luciana, howled into the night air. He couldn’t quite believe that he had allowed her to get to him. He was usually stronger than this and took no insult from women but with her, Reed knew he couldn’t do that.
‘’Are you alright sir?’’ an agent asked, walking up to him.
It was their sole duty to protect him being that he was the heir. Failure to do that would no doubt be very colossal for them all because the don, Pablo would kill them.
‘’Does it look like i’m alright to you?’’ Reed snapped.
‘’A thousand apologies sir.’’ the agent said, receding to the back.
Apparently, this wasn’t a good time to ask that sort of question seeing that he wasn’t in a good mood.
‘’Now how do i play this game and win?’’ Reed murmured.
Luciana had expertly used the very thing he was weak at to lure him into this game. She knew quite well how he felt about her and had used it against him. It was a smart yet bold move which would no doubt lead to only one victor.
Reed had a feeling that the victor would be Luciana because she was a master of this game, a game that he would fail woefully even if he tried. Luciana had been playing this game for a very long time now and there was possibly no way he could win even if he tried.
‘’Let’s get out of here.’’ Reed said as he walked out of the club.
He climbed into the car just as the driver eased the car onto the highway. Traffic that night was light because it was already late. Most people had already gotten back home and the only people who plied the road by this time were either security men or men of the underworld.
‘’Do you by chance know anything about Luciana Andreas?’’ Reed asked.
If there was anyone who could give him some information about Luciana, it had to be his men. They were always current and up to date with news and information and could accurately give him what he wanted.
‘’Yes sir, we do. In fact, we have an intel on her back at the mansion.’’ an agent said.
‘’You do and you never deemed it fit to inform me?’’ Reed scoffed.
‘’Apologies sir.’’ the agent said.
Reed hissed just as the car pulled to a stop within his gated compound. The distance between his house and his club wasn’t that far and since traffic was light, they could drive through within minutes.
Even before the car stopped to a final halt, Reed jumped out as he made his way towards the front doors. Asides being curious to know what the agents had on Luciana, he also wanted to know how his father was faring. Ever since the doctor had confirmed that he was suffering from a stroke, his health had declined rapidly.
‘’Papa.’’ Reed smiled as soon as he walked into his father’s room.
He was happy to see his father sitting up in bed, reading a newspaper. Other times he had seen him, he had either been laying down or fast asleep and it was an uneasy sleep which was filled with so much pain and discomfort.
‘’Reed… son, how are you?’’ his father asked.
‘’I’m fine father, how are you feeling today?’’ he asked.
‘’Well, your old man can’t complain. I’m doing alright.’’ he smiled.
Reed touched his head lightly to feel his temperature and he was quite glad that it was somewhat normal. It wasn’t as hot as he thought it would be, which was a relief owing to the fact that previous times had been very scary.
‘’I met Andreas today.’’ Reed said.
His father’s expression changed immediately and when he looked back at his son, his eyes were filled with so much hate it scared the living daylights out of Reed. he had never seen his father summon so much hate in such a short period of time. It just seemed like he had been breeding that hate for a long time and now, he let it out.
‘’Which one of them?’’ he asked.
‘’The head, Luciana Andreas.’’ Reed said.
He took the chair facing his father. He had a feeling that this was going to be a long conversation and he wasn’t quite sure if he was ready for it.
‘’That b***h!’’ Pablo seethed.
His hands fisted the newspaper he was holding in apparent anger as he stared at nothing in particular. Reed could tell that what he was feeling was rage and anger which were bad things for his health.
‘’Please calm down papa, i have it all under control.’’ Reed said.
Pablo took a deep breath, expelling the pent up anger that had filled him up. He knew his son was right but still, he found it hard to control how he was feeling.
‘’What did you two discuss?’’ his father asked.
Reed knew he’d be a fool to tell him everything that they had discussed. At that moment, he decided to just tell him about how he had threatened Luciana. He knew that was what his father would love to hear.
‘’I threatened her and she was quite scared.’’ Reed lied.
He didn’t know if his father would believe what he said but it was much better than telling him about the game. That alone would set off alarm bells in his head.
‘’I knew you took after me. That is good son, keep it up and keep me posted on anything else.’’ Pablo said.
Reed nodded, rising to his feet. There was nothing left for him to say and he knew that if he stayed any longer here, he was bound to tell his father the truth which was something he wanted to avoid at all cost.
‘’I will retire to bed now.’’ Reed said.
‘’Sleep well son.’’ Pablo said.
Reed walked out of the room, shutting the door behind him. He took a deep breath before walking towards the area where he was to meet the agent.
‘’Here is a comprehensive file on Luciana Andreas.’’ the agent said, handing him a brown manilla folder.
Reed took it from him before walking back to his room. Now that he had the information he needed, he was going to take his time to read everything and actually know the kind of person he was dealing with.
He took a quick shower, drying himself as he made his way back to his room where the file was on the table waiting for him. Reed took a deep breath before opening the first page in the file. Here, it contained information on her which included her date of birth, her place of birth and her family in general.
Reed discovered that she was the only child and her mother had been taken away from her by his father. Reed hardly remembered the details of that event but deep down, he knew that what his father had done was a very bad thing to do. He had a feeling that that was the main reason why Luciana was carrying out this revenge.
‘’I see now,’’ he murmured.
Even though he was a full blooded Fontana he never agreed to some of his father’s dealings. Most of it was selfish and wicked and very heartless to say the least.
‘’Why does he behave like this at times?’’ Reed murmured.
Some of his father’s acts were heartless and very selfish and the only reason why Reed was sticking with him was due to the fact that he was his son and heir. As soon as his father dropped dead, full power would be restored to him.
He didn’t want to be selfish but he wished his father would just die so he would be in charge. There were many things he was going to change, beginning from some of the heads who had been very loyal to his father.
Reed flipped to another page within the file and here was a complete dossier of Luciana as a child and her growing up years. It was really amazing to see how beautiful and carefree she was and his heart moved towards her in that moment.
‘’She’s so beautiful.’’ Reed murmured.
He stared into her eyes and in that moment he wished he could just hug her and comfort her. In the little moments he had spent with her, he was very drawn to her. She had intrigued him like no woman had ever done and Reed knew that he couldn’t afford to play that game with her.
‘’I love you.’’ he sighed.
He had been denying it for a long time and now that he had said it out loud, he felt quite relieved. There was really no point in holding onto something that was evident.
He flipped to another page and here, it talked about her father’s illness and how she took over from him. It was scary yet beautiful to see the young Luciana wield power. Staring at her picture, Reed could see a hard look within her eyes. He knew it was born out of the need to make her father proud and Reed knew that she would do it.
The file ended and he placed it at his side table. Now that he had an idea of who Luciana was, it was left to him now to be smart and know what to do as regards her revenge mission.
‘’I have to find a way to stop her.’’ Reed said.
If he didn’t, he had no doubt that when she carried out her revenge, it would be very bloody which was something he wanted to avoid at all cost.
Just then, his phone gave a small beep indicating he had a message. He flipped his screen open and he discovered it was from an unknown number. It was strange because people hardly knew his number.
‘’Glad to see you today Fontana, I hope you keep to your side of the game. A.’’
The message had come from Luciana, Reed had no doubt but one thing he was confused about was how she got his number. Considering the kind of person she was, he knew she could have easily gotten his number somewhere.
‘’Let the game begin.’’ he replied.
