62 The parking lot of the Mayflower Bowl Arena was awash with cars, trucks, and people. Jurassic-size cuts of meat sizzled on grills hooked up to canisters of gas. Kids threw small, sponge footballs, while their parents drank beer from red plastic cups. Some had their faces and bodies painted with the red and white of the Mayflower High Devils. Others settled for just the team shirt. Alice had left the SUV two blocks down, the surrounding streets jammed nose-to-tail. She picked her way through the crowds, hit by the smells of barbecues and beer. She pulled eyes and chatter like a magnet pulled quarters. Along the way, stereos blasted rock, pop, and dance, each contained in its own pocket of audio space. After a few minutes of searching, she found her family toward the front of the lot. T
