64 I undo the laces on my tennis shoes and slip them off my feet. Next, I remove my socks and stand on the cold cement floor, wriggling out my toes as I let them breathe. I've had my socks and sneakers on so long, I'd forgotten what it felt like to have bare feet. How loose and free. The skin on my toes glows red and raw and the whole room suddenly stinks of stale cheese. I pick up a sock and put the toe-end between my teeth. It tastes salty, disgusting, but the cotton is thinner at this end. I pull and tear at the sock, until I hear a ripping sound. With a hole made in the end of the toe, I get my fingers inside and pull my hands apart as hard as I can. The sock rips down the middle and up through the elastic part that grips the ankle.
