THE CONTRACT
Madelyn Red, a talented and accomplished romance novelist, sat at her desk, staring blankly at her computer screen. With several bestselling novels under her belt, she had built a loyal following and established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the literary world. Her passion for storytelling and her ability to craft compelling characters and plots earned her critical acclaim and commercial success. She focuses on writing fantasy and kids books because she loves kids despite the tantrums they have. Despite her accomplishments, Madelyn was struggling to come up with her next big idea. She had been feeling stuck for weeks, and her deadline was fast approaching. Madelyn stood up to get hot cocoa, searching for anything to give her inspiration to write. She got back to her desk, and still starred blankly at her computer screen.” Dammit, I have been on this chapter for 5 hours now”, she said out loud to herself. She couldn't help but feel a sense of frustration and doubt. She had been struggling to write anything meaningful for weeks, and her deadline was fast approaching. As a fantasy novelist, she was used to pouring her heart and soul into her stories, but lately, the words just wouldn't come. Just right she was about to go to bed, her phone rang, breaking the silence. Madelyn hesitated for a moment before answering, hoping it wasn't another rejection call from a publisher. She has had enough of their criticisms against her book. But as she heard the voice on the other end, her heart skipped a beat. "Hello?" she said tentatively. "Madelyn, this is Rachel from Silver Lane Publishing. We've been following your work, and we're impressed "Thank you, Rachel. That means a lot of coming from you." Madelyn said with a sense of excitement and relief. Madelyn's eyes widened as she listened to Rachel speaking over the phone. Madelyn's heart skipped a beat. Silver Lane was one of the top publishing houses in the industry. “We would like to make you an offer. Unfortunately, Veronica Lane – has fallen ill and is unable to complete her popular book series. We're looking for a writer to take over the project; your name arose as a potential candidate and we think you'd be perfect for the job.” Madelyn was thinking fast. It seemed like a golden opportunity. She had been offered a chance to replace Veronica Lane on her popular book series which was any romance writer’s dream come true. Madelyn was Veronica’s greatest fan because she thought that no one else could outdo her in romantic novels. “You know what Rachel? I’m shocked! But why did you think about me especially when Veronica Lane writes differently from my prose? I'm flattered really, Rachel. But I have to ask, why me?" "Honestly, that is exactly what we want Madelyn.” What they need now is a fresh pair of eyes that will bring new life into these series hence they settled on me above other people.” As Rachel spoke, Madelyn’s mind raced with excitement, knowing that she might be able to continue the legacy left behind by Veronica and take it even further than it ever went before Madelyn's mind raced. This was an indeed an opportunity of a lifetime. She was being offered the opportunity to take over Veronica Lane's popular book series, a dream come true for any romance novelist. Veronica Lane was a legend in the industry, and Madelyn was her biggest fan. "That's exactly why we want you, Madelyn. We need someone who can bring a fresh perspective to the series. And we're willing to offer you a significant advance and a guaranteed publishing contract." As Rachel spoke, Madelyn's mind raced with excitement. She had always admired Veronica's work, and the chance to continue her legacy was an honor and a challenge she couldn't resist. Madelyn's heart raced as she considered the offer. It was too good to pass up. "I'm interested, Rachel. Can you tell me more about the series and what's expected of me?" Rachel laughed. "Of course, Madelyn. Let me set up a meeting with our team, and we'll discuss the details. But trust me, this is an opportunity you won't want to miss." Madelyn's heart raced as she considered the offer. It was too good to pass up. She had always been inspired by Veronica's work, and now she had the chance to add her twist to the series. With a sense of excitement and trepidation, Madelyn agreed to meet with the Silver Lane team to discuss the details, and they scheduled it for the following day. As she hung up the phone, she felt a spark of excitement she hadn't felt in months. This could be the break she needed to revive her career. THE NEXT DAY Madelyn arrived at the Silver Lane Publishing office, her nerves fluttering in her stomach. She was greeted by Rachel, who led her to a conference room filled with a team of editors, marketers, and a man who introduced himself as Drew Lane, Veronica's husband on a screen which seemed to be a live video call. They presented the project officially and Madelyn learned that Veronica’s series was about billionaires involved in a crime as a detective, a genre that was unfamiliar to her., a genre she had never written before. But the more they spoke, the more she became intrigued by the story and its characters. She looked around the room and realized that she had met everyone before but one-Drew Lane. Drew Lane, in particular, caught her attention. His wealth and secrecy around his life earned him a place in his community’s gossip columns as someone with a shrouded past. She could see depths of sorrow and desire in his countenance as he reminisced about what his wife did. If the tabloids were right, this man would be defined as the ‘Devil in Prada’ Soon the meeting concluded, Madelyn asked for more time before she accepted the job. She left the office with a mix of emotions: excitement for the project, but also a sense of trepidation. She knew she had a lot to learn about this new genre, and she was about to enter the world of the wealthy and mysterious Drew Lane. Madelyn walked out of the Silver Lane Publishing building, and couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. She had just been handed a golden opportunity, and she was determined to make the most of it. But as she hailed a taxi, her mind began to wander back to Drew Lane. There was something about him that intrigued her, something that went beyond his wealth and mysterious past. She boarded a taxi, and took out her phone to Google Search ‘Veronica Lane’s book series’. She had been a fan and read all her books before, but she understood that should she take the project she had not written on, she needed to know the theme and personages. Madelyn immersed herself in exploring the series while a taxi was making its way through bustling Los Angeles streets. The latest top-charted book she read about was Veronica. The series had begun to top the chart again for the 5th time. The story was about a young journalist known as Sophia who had fallen for a billionaire called Alexander. There were many shocking things, twists and turns that surrounded the billionaire in the story and Madelyn found herself getting lost in the world of luxury, crime, and romance. She began to read the one page of Veronica’s manuscript, but this time as a writer, Madelyn began to notice something was amiss. Her books seemed to be based on real events, and the characters seemed to be inspired by real people. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this story than meets the eye.
