Kathleen: I had spent the night on the sofa, soothing my nerves by going through the satellite channels until I found a marathon of baking shows—exactly what I needed. Every hour I went in and checked on Teddy, keeping my promise to the doctor and to William. Drunk asleep, the fever easing up as he sweated into the sheets. Not too long before he woke up, I called work—catching Alex and Rosa as they began closing down for the night. "Saw you on the telly, girl!" Alex laughed. "Saving the world, one little girl at a time?" Rosa had been more tactful, telling me she'd tried some of Chef Debussy's recipes and finding them delicious.
