La Fiamma Nera: Bound By Death
Chapter One Bound by Shadows Samuel Carter had seen all kinds of nights in his years as a detective, blood stained alleyways, hushed interrogations, shadows hiding knives. But tonight, in his own home, he wanted only peace. The kind of peace he fought for every day but rarely touched. The dining room smelled of warm stew and baked bread. A soft lamp glowed above the small table, casting a golden haze over the room. Samuel sat opposite his wife, Lila, her face pale but still radiant. She had given birth only weeks ago, and though her body still ached, her eyes shone with that new mother’s glow tired, fragile, but full of a love that felt endless. “You really didn’t have to cook, Sam,” she said, adjusting her robe as she tried to sit comfortably. “You’ve been working all week. And now this.” Samuel chuckled, lifting his spoon. “Detectives know more than criminals, you know. I can follow recipes too.” Lila gave him a weak laugh, shaking her head. “Mhm, don’t flatter yourself. You nearly burned the bread.” “Nearly,” he corrected. “But not completely. That’s progress.” For a while they ate in silence, the kind of silence that isn’t heavy but soft, like an old blanket. Then Lila leaned her chin on her hand, studying him. “You know, sometimes I wonder how we even ended up here… a detective and a simple girl like me.” Samuel smiled, a warmth lighting his features. “Simple? You gave me the most complicated gift in the world.” He nodded toward the baby’s room. “That little girl is already giving me sleepless nights, and she’s barely three weeks old.” Lila chuckled. “You think she’s difficult now? Wait until she grows teeth.” Just then, as if the baby had overheard and decided to prove her point, a sharp cry pierced through the house. Lila groaned, pressing her forehead to her palm. “Oh, my God. She won’t let me rest. Always crying… she’s just like her father.” Samuel leaned back in his chair, grinning. “Yea, she is her father’s daughter,” he teased, his tone light. Lila smirked tiredly, pushed herself up, and shuffled toward the baby’s room. Samuel watched her with a mix of admiration and worry, ready to get up and help if she stumbled. But before he could even stand, everything broke. A scream tore from Lila’s throat loud, sharp, nothing like the soft laughter that had filled the room seconds ago. The baby’s cries turned desperate, shrill. Samuel shot to his feet, heart pounding. He barely had time to rush toward the nursery before the front door shuddered and cracked apart with a single brutal kick. Wood splinters scattered across the floor. A group of armed men stormed in, boots thudding against the tiles, weapons gleaming under the weak lamp. And then Samuel froze. Out of the nursery came Lila, her face white with terror, stumbling forward. Behind her stood a man with a gun pressed against the back of her head. In his other arm, he cradled their baby recklessly, as though she were nothing more than baggage. The baby cried harder, flailing against his rough grip. “No!” Samuel shouted, voice breaking. He tried to move forward, but one of the intruders raised a pistol to his chest, forcing him still. In the middle of them all, moving with deliberate calm, came a man who didn’t need to announce himself. He was tall, black, and broad shouldered, his presence commanding silence even among his crew. His suit was dark, tailored, and his heavy boots sounded like judgment on the floor. Everything about him said one thing: boss. The man didn’t look at Samuel at first. He sat down at the dining chair Samuel had just left, leaning back as though he owned the house. He tapped the table with one finger, steady and controlled. Then, finally, he lifted his gaze with dark, sharp eyes that carried danger in every blink. Eyes sharp, dangerous. Eyes that carried death. “I just want one answer,” he said, his voice deep and heavy, like rolling thunder. “Give me what I want, and your family lives.” Samuel’s chest heaved. “Please,” he begged, tears brimming. “Don’t hurt them. Please.” “Where is Richard Carter?” the man asked. Samuel froze. Richard. His brother. He knew instantly why they were here. “I… I don’t know. Please. Don’t hurt us.” The boss’s eyes narrowed. He motioned to the thug holding the baby. “Bring her.” The man stepped forward, dangling the child. Samuel’s stomach twisted as the boss stood, towering over the infant. His gaze swept over her with cruel patience. “I’ll ask again,” he said coldly. “If I hear a stupid answer, I’ll shred this baby limb by limb.” “No, please!” Lila’s scream cracked into sobs. She clutched her hands together, begging, shaking. “Where is Richard Carter?” he asked again, slower this time. Samuel’s voice cracked, fear choking him. “He… he doesn’t live here. Please. He lives at” He rattled off the address, trembling. The boss tilted his head, lips curling into a dark smirk. “And if this address is wrong?” “It’s not,” Samuel cried desperately. “I swear it’s not.” For a long moment, silence ruled the room. Only the baby’s cries broke through. Then the boss moved closer to Lila, who knelt clutching the child once the thug returned her. Tears drenched her face. Her body shook. “You’re lucky,” he muttered. Then he turned sharply and signaled his men. As quickly as they had come, they left. The shattered door swung on broken hinges. Their boots echoed into the night, fading away. Samuel rushed to Lila, holding her tight. She sobbed against him, still trembling, whispering broken words. “Why us? Why here?” He held her tighter, his own chest shaking. “They’re Mafia. From Richard’s old life. Somehow… somehow it’s caught up with us.” His face hardened. “Pack a bag. We can’t stay here. There’s an old underground bunker near the barn. You and the baby will hide there. I’ll be back.” “What? No!” Lila shook her head violently, clutching their daughter. “Samuel, don’t leave me. Those men will kill you. You’re just a detective. They’re monsters!” Samuel cupped her face, kissed her forehead, kissed the baby’s damp cheek. “I have to, Lila. Richard and his family are in danger. If they find him before I do” He swallowed hard. “I can’t let that happen.” “No,” she wept. “Don’t make me a widow. Don’t leave your daughter without a father.” “I’ll come back,” he whispered, though doubt wavered in his tone. “I’ll come back to you both.” He guided her quickly to the hidden bunker, checking that no one was watching. He shut the heavy door, the lock clicking like a final goodbye. For a moment, he pressed his palm against the wood, listening to the muffled cries of his baby, to Lila’s soft prayers. Then, drawing a sharp breath, he turned and stepped back into the cold night. Samuel Carter, detective, husband, father was walking into the storm. And for the first time in years, he wasn’t sure he would walk back out.
