*STORY DESCRIPTION: "WHEN THE HEART DEFIES THE ANCESTORS"* *1. SETTING* Mbakor village, Benue State, Tiv land. Red earth roads that turn to mud when it rains. Compound houses with zinc roofs and mud walls. Mango trees that give shade in the afternoon heat. The smell of wood smoke, pounded yam, and fresh earth after rain. Here, tradition is not written in books. It is spoken by elders, lived by families, and guarded by ancestors. In this place, what the community says is law.*2. PREMISE*University student Akume Tyover returns home for holiday with his girlfriend Secivir, expecting a peaceful visit and family introductions. Instead, he meets Doosughun — his father’s sister-in-law — who is visiting for two days. From the moment their eyes meet, an impossible love is born. A love that violates Tiv tradition, breaks family bonds, and ignites war in the compound. Against the judgment of family, culture, and an angry ex-girlfriend, Akume and Doosughun choose each other. What follows is a battle for love, dignity, and the right to choose.*3. MAIN CHARACTERS**AKUME TYOVER, 24* The first son of Tyover. Tall, thoughtful, and respected. A university student home for holiday. Raised by his mother Doom with teachings of honor and discipline. He arrives with his girlfriend, but his heart is captured the instant he sees Doosughun. He is quiet but unshakable once he makes a decision. He becomes the face of defiance against tradition.*DOOSUGHUN, 21* Younger sister to Ngufan, Tyover’s second wife. Gentle, hardworking, and deeply respectful. She comes to visit her sister and does not expect her life to change. She carries the weight of being “family” in Tiv culture, which makes her untouchable to Akume. Yet her heart betrays the rules. She is torn between duty and love, between shame and truth.*TYOVER* Village elder and head of the compound. Husband to Doom and Ngufan. A man who values respect and name. He is proud of his son Akume but is destroyed when he learns of the relationship. He is caught between protecting his son and upholding the laws of his fathers.*DOOM* Akume’s mother and Tyover’s first wife. Strong, traditional, and prayerful. She raised Akume alone through hardship. When the scandal breaks, her world collapses. She must choose between her son and the tradition that raised her.*NGUFAN* Second wife to Tyover and elder sister to Doosughun. She brought her sister into the home in peace. Now she is caught in the middle — loyal to her husband, protective of her sister, and ashamed before the village.*SECIVIR, 21* Akume’s girlfriend from the university. Educated, proud, and ambitious. She came to Mbakor expecting to be welcomed as the future wife. When she sees Akume’s attention shift to Doosughun, jealousy turns to rage. She becomes the spark that exposes the secret to the entire family.*THE ELDERS & TIV TRADITION* The unseen but most powerful character. In Tiv culture, a son cannot marry into his father’s in-law family. To do so is abomination. The elders represent the voice of ancestors. They threaten banishment, curses, and public shame.*4. PLOT ARC**ACT I: THE SPARK* Akume arrives home with Secivir. The compound is full. Tyover is expecting his son. Ngufan’s sister Doosughun is visiting. During simple daily tasks — fetching water, sharing meals, evening conversations — Akume and Doosughun begin to notice each other. It starts with respect, then curiosity, then something deeper. Secivir sees it immediately. The first cracks appear in the family. *ACT II: THE EXPOSURE & THE WAR* Secivir confronts Akume. He denies it, but the truth is already in his eyes. Rumors spread. Doom notices her son’s distance. Ngufan notices her sister’s distraction. When Tyover hears whispers, he calls Akume. The confrontation shakes the compound. Akume confesses his feelings. Tyover is furious. Doom weeps. Ngufan is speechless. The elders are summoned. The word spreads beyond the compound: “Abomination in Tyover’s house.” Secivir, heartbroken and humiliated, fans the flames. She tells neighbors, adding her own pain to the story.*ACT III: THE TRIAL* Akume and Doosughun are brought before the council of elders. The charge is read: defiling family, breaking ancestral law, bringing shame to the lineage. The punishment discussed is severe — banishment, fines, even curses on future children. Akume stands and speaks. Not with anger, but with calm conviction. He argues that love is not by blood. That Doosughun is not his aunt by birth. That their hearts have chosen, and to force them apart is to kill them. Doosughun speaks too, voice shaking but clear. She accepts shame, but not lies. The elders are divided. Some call for immediate punishment. Others see sincerity.*ACT IV: THE SACRIFICE & THE VICTORY* To appease the ancestors and the community, Tyover proposes a path: traditional cleansing, sacrifice. true love is sweet even when there it's face danger even when it's been attack by difference

love at first sight
*CHAPTER 1: THE RETURN TO MBAKOR* The sun had already bowed behind the hills of Mbakor village when the sound of a commercial bus broke the quiet evening. Dust rose behind it as it stopped at Tyover’s junction. Akume Tyover stepped down first. He was twenty-two, tall, with the calm posture of a university student who had learned to carry both books and responsibility. Three years in the city had refined his English, but it had not removed the red earth of Benue from his blood. Behind him came Secivir. His girlfriend. City-bred, confident, with braids that fell to her back and lips that spoke without fear. She had come to “meet the family.” In her mind, this visit was the beginning of marriage discussions. The gate opened and Doom, Akume’s mother, rushed out. _“Akume! My son!”_ She pulled him into her arms and wept. Tyover stood behind her, proud but composed. _“So the university has returned my son to me,”_ he said, clapping Akume’s back. _“Papa, Mama,”_ Akume greeted, kneeling briefly. _“This is Secivir. My girlfriend.”_ Secivir bowed. _“Good evening, Papa. Good evening, Mama.”_ The compound came alive. Children ran. Neighbors looked over the fence. Dinner was being prepared under the mango tree. Lanterns were lit. The smell of soup filled the air. What no one mentioned was that Tyover’s compound already had a visitor. She had arrived two days earlier. Her name was Doosughun. *CHAPTER 2: THE FIRST GLANCE* Dinner was served on a long table. Tyover sat at the head. Doom to his right. Secivir beside Akume, her hand resting on his arm. Ngufan, the second wife, moved between kitchen and table, serving. And then she came. Doosughun. She carried a bowl of soup from the kitchen. Twenty years old. Final year in secondary school. She had come to visit her elder sister Ngufan. Her wrapper was simple green. Her blouse was plain white. No makeup. No jewelry. But when Akume looked up, the world narrowed to her face. Her eyes were calm, like water in a clay pot. Her skin glowed in the lantern light. She moved with quiet grace. Akume’s spoon stopped halfway to his mouth. _“Papa,”_ he said, his voice suddenly dry. _“Who is that?”_ Tyover smiled. _“That is Doosughun. My in-law. Sister to Ngufan, your stepmother. She came to visit two days ago.”_ _“Good evening, Oga,”_ Doosughun greeted softly, lowering her eyes. _“Welcome home.”_ _“Thank you,”_ Akume replied. But his heart was beating in a way it never had before. Secivir noticed. She had been with Akume for two years. She knew every look on his face. He had never looked at any girl like this. Like he had just discovered something he didn’t know he was looking for. Throughout dinner, Akume’s eyes returned to Doosughun. When she laughed quietly with the children. When she served with both hands. When she spoke only when spoken to. Secivir’s grip on his arm tightened. Akume did not notice. That night, something had begun. And neither Akume nor Doosughun knew how to stop it. *CHAPTER 3: SEVEN DAYS TOGETHER* Doosughun was supposed to leave after two days. But Ngufan asked her to stay one more week to help with the harvest. One more week. For seven days, Akume and Doosughun lived under the same roof. They did not speak. Tiv tradition did not permit it. She was his father’s in-law. But silence has its own language. In the morning, Akume saw her at the well, drawing water. She would greet and hurry away. In the afternoon, he saw her under the mango tree, reading her WAEC textbooks. In the evening, she served food and for one second their eyes would meet. Each glance was a question. Each greeting was a confession. Secivir watched everything. She watched Akume’s eyes follow Doosughun. She watched Doosughun’s cheeks turn pink when Akume spoke. On the fourth night, Secivir could not hold it in. In their room, she turned to Akume. _“What is wrong with you?”_ Akume frowned. _“What do you mean?”_ _“Don’t play dumb,”_ Secivir said. _“Doosughun. Since the night you saw her, you are not here. Your body is here, but your mind is following her.”_ Akume sat up. _“Secivir, you are imagining things.”_ _“Am I?”_ Secivir’s voice shook. _“Akume, she is your father’s in-law. Do you understand what that means in this village? If anyone finds out, they will call it abomination.”_ Akume did not answer. Because he had no answer. *CHAPTER 4: AT THE STREAM* It happened on the sixth day. Akume went to the stream to fetch water. The path was empty. Heat pressed down from the sky. He did not expect to meet anyone. But Doosughun was there. Kneeling by a rock, washing clothes. Her wrapper tied high. Water on her arms. She looked up when she heard footsteps. _“Akume,”_ she said, startled. _“Doosughun,”_ he replied. For a while, there was only the sound of water. _“You should be preparing for WAEC,”_ Akume said finally. _“I will go back next week,”_ she answered. _“After I help my sister.”_ Another silence. Then the words came out of Akume before he could stop them. _“You are beautiful.”_ Doosughun stood up quickly. _“Akume, don’t. Please. I am your father’s in-law. This is wrong. If the elders hear, they will...”_ _“I know,”_ Akume cut in. He stepped closer. _“I know what it is. And I know what I feel. From the night I came home and saw you, I have not been the same.”_ Tears filled Doosughun’s eyes. _“And I feel it too,”_ she whispered. _“That is why I am afraid.”_ She did not wait for his reply. She picked up her bucket and walked away, crying silently. Akume stood by the stream for a long time. *CHAPTER 5: THE ONLY WITNESS* Secivir had followed him. She hid behind the trees. She saw Akume speak. She saw Doosughun cry. She saw the truth in both their faces. She did not shout. She did not run to the compound. She walked back alone. That night she lay beside Akume and said nothing. But inside her, a storm was raging. Because now she knew. This was not a crush. This was not a mistake. This was love. Forbidden. Dangerous. And she was the only person in the entire compound who knew. *CHAPTER 6: THE WEIGHT OF KNOWING* The next two days were heavy. Doosughun avoided Akume. She kept her eyes down. Akume became quiet. He ate less. He slept less. Secivir watched them both like a guard. She wanted to tell Tyover. She wanted to tell Doom. She wanted to scream and break the silence. But she didn’t. Because a small part of her still hoped Akume would turn back to her. And a bigger part of her was terrified of what would happen if the truth came out. On Doosughun’s last night, Secivir found her in the kitchen alone, washing plates. _“Doosughun,”_ Secivir said. Doosughun jumped. _“You scared me.”_ Secivir stepped closer. _“I know,”_ she said quietly. _“About you and Akume.”_ Doosughun froze. _“I don’t...”_ _“Don’t lie,”_ Secivir interrupted. Her voice was soft, not angry. _“I saw you at the stream. I see how you look at him. I see how he looks at you.”_ Doosughun began to cry. _“Secivir, please. We haven’t done anything. We just... it just happened.”_ Secivir nodded. _“I won’t tell anyone. Not yet. But you both need to understand. What you have is dangerous. It can destroy this family.”_ Doosughun wiped her face. _“I know.”_ Secivir turned to go. At the door she paused. _“Akume has to choose. Soon. Before this secret burns all of us.”_ She left. Doosughun was left with her tears. Akume was left asleep, unaware. And the compound was quiet. But the secret was now alive. And it had a name. And it had a witness.
