Chapter One
The stench of blood hit Alessia like a physical blow. It wasn't the stain on the rough wooden floor that turned her stomach, but the metallic tang that hung heavy in the air, thick with fear and finality. It was the fear clinging to her own skin that made her heart hammer against her ribs as she hid, watching from behind the door.
Viper, as he was called, stood in the middle of the apartment that she shared with her step father. Everyone in the city knew who he was; the most dangerous loan shark. His chuckle rasped like sandpaper against bone, sending shivers down her spine. Two burly men hoisted her stepfather off the floor, his face a mask of terror.
"Enough time, old man," Viper drawled, his voice slick as oil. "You know the price of default."
Her stepfather's eyes darted around the room, pleading. "Please, just a week. I swear I'll get you your money."
Viper's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Time's up." He pulled out a gun. Its dark metal gleamed under the dim overhead light, a chilling contrast to the worn furniture and peeling paint of the apartment.
Alessia watched, frozen. One shot, and it would be over. Free of the man who'd been nothing but a cruel shadow since her mother's death. One shot, and she'd never see the hate flickering in his eyes again.
But before the trigger could pull, her feet moved against her will. The gun swung towards her, the cold metal biting into her forehead.
"Wait!" she choked out, voice hoarse. "I'll get you the money."
She felt his gaze slither across her like a cold reptile, and knew her carefully constructed world was about to crumble.
He met her gaze, his eyes like two black marbles searching her soul. "Who are you?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Her stepfather, pathetic even in fear, blurted, "She's nobody."
Nobody. The word echoed in her mind, sharp and hollow. But she swallowed it, her voice steady despite the tremor in her limbs.
Viper put the gun down, a cruel smile growing on his face, “How does a good for nothing man like you end up with a w***e as beautiful as this?” He stepped closer, his finger, long and pale, traced a line down her cheek, sending goosebumps erupting across her skin.
She cringed but didn’t move away, “I am not his w***e. I am his step daughter.”
His smile widened, sharp and predatory. "A beautiful stepdaughter for a worthless man," he said.
"I will get you the money," she repeated, her voice tight. "Just don't kill him."
He laughed, a cold, humorless sound. "Five hundred thousand, little dove. You think you can conjure that out of thin air?"
Her breath hitched. Five hundred thousand? Her stepfather had borrowed that amount of money from the most dangerous loan shark in the city?
The surprise on her face must have been telling. "See," he purred, his voice close to her ear, "you know it's impossible."
He leaned in further, his breath hot against her cheek. "You should have stayed hidden, princess."
He turned to his men, two mountains of muscle flanking him. "Take her."
Panic surged through her, icy and sharp. She struggled, clawing and kicking, but against their combined strength, she was a leaf in their arms. Her screams echoed in the small apartment, bouncing off the peeling walls and unanswered by anyone.
"Two days," Viper's voice echoed in her ears as they dragged her out. "Two days to find my money. Or I'll auction her off to the highest bidder."
The beat-up apartment receded behind her. The worn-out chair, the TV with its dead signal, the life she'd known - all gone in a blur of violence and fear.
Her final glimpse was of her stepfather, eyes downcast, offering no comfort, no promise of help. At that moment, she knew. He wouldn't fight for her. She was alone, and her fate was sealed in the hands of a monster.
No knight in shining armor would come to save her. This wasn't a fairy tale. This was her reality, bleak and terrifying, and she had two days to find a way out.
Tied and blindfolded, Alessia felt the rough pull as the men threw her into the car, a jarring reminder of her powerlessness. The engine roared to life, drowning out her muffled protests. She struggled until a sharp pain stung her hand, she turned to Viper, his malicious smile the last thing she saw before slipping into unconsciousness.
When she awoke, the cold hard floor beneath her replaced the fleeting comfort of the car seat. The air was thick with a putrid stench, assaulting her senses. As her vision adjusted, she saw Viper, seated in a dimly lit room, his gaze fixated on her like a predator observing its prey.
Struggling to her feet, the ropes binding her hands bit into her skin. Fear flickered in her eyes,"What is this place?"
Viper's smile was cruel, his eyes gleaming with malevolence. "Welcome to your new reality, little dove," he sneered, savoring her disorientation. He circled her, a serpent reveling in its triumph.
Her surroundings became clearer – cold, damp walls, and the stale air of confinement. Alessia swallowed hard, realizing the gravity of her situation. "You can't do this. I have nothing to do with this," a shaky defiance in her voice.
Viper chuckled, a sound devoid of humor. "You are collateral and you will fetch me an even bigger price when he doesn’t bring me my money. For your own good, little dove, I hope he does. You wouldn't last a day in this world." He tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, the gesture sending shivers down her spine. Then, with a final laugh that echoed off the slamming door, he was gone.
Sleep didn’t come that night. The cold stone floor seeped through her clothes, chilling her bones. Around her, whispers of despair hung heavy in the air, punctuated by the occasional choked sob. A week ago, she'd been counting down the days to escape this city, the source of so much pain. Now, the countdown was for something far more sinister.
Two days. Two days until her stepfather, a man who saw her more as a burden than a daughter, would decide her fate. And deep down, she knew. He wouldn't come.
Hunger gnawed at her insides, adding to the gnawing fear. When food finally arrived on the second day, brought by one of the men who'd dragged her here, it was a cruel mockery. His eyes followed her hungrily as he slid the meager rations across the floor. "They'll pay good money for you," he leered, closing the distance between them. "Maybe I should claim a taste first, hmm?"
Terror choked her voice as she scrambled back, "Stay away!" Her desperate plea hung in the stale air, unanswered.
"Let's see how pretty you are everywhere," he taunted, advancing. Panic surged through her, adrenaline fueling her fight. She clawed at him, pummeled him with fists, but his grip was iron. Tears streamed down her face, blurring his leering grin.
Suddenly, her fingers brushed against the metal tray holding the meager food. Hope ignited in her chest. With a surge of desperate strength, she grabbed the tray, shoving the lukewarm slop over his head. His surprised grunt gave her an opening.
She bolted. The stench of the room assaulted her nostrils, but it was freedom's stink, and she ran headfirst towards it. A door. An escape. But just as her fingers touched the handle, a gunshot echoed, the sound sharp and final.
Alessia froze, breath hitching in her throat. He stood there, Viper, anger twisting his face into a mask. "Another step," he snarled, gun trained on her, "and the next bullet will go through your head.."
Trapped, cornered, his hand snaked around her throat when he reached her, squeezing the air from her lungs. His voice, a low growl, sent shivers down her spine, "Did you really think you could outrun your fate, little dove?”
Tears streamed down her face, blurring the world around her as Viper tightened his grip on her throat. Each choked gasp was a desperate plea, "Please... let me go."
A cruel smile stretched across his face, mirroring the cruel twist in his voice. "Time's up and the money's nowhere to be seen. Leaves me with only one choice, doesn't it?"
"No, please..." Her voice cracked, desperation raw as she clawed at his hands, her pleas morphing into choked sobs. But his grip remained unyielding, squeezing the air from her lungs until stars danced in her vision.
With a sudden jerk, he yanked her away, sending her staggering. The world tilted, and before she could regain her balance, a stinging slap connected with her cheek. She crumpled to the floor, ears ringing, vision swimming.
Viper loomed over her, his smile turning into a sadistic grin. "Learn how to behave or pain will be your everyday punishment. You are going nowhere and it doesn’t matter who buys you…. They are all monsters.”
