FORTY-SIX

2025 Words

I did not understand. I could not. We were Mankind Protectors. We took an oath to protect the entirety of mankind from the beast. We vowed to hunt and kill every and anything that posed a threat to our existence as a species. We did not hunt ourselves. We hunted dragons, not humans. Never humans. It made no sense. She was human. Olivia was human so why was she so stiff? Why was she so cold? Why did she not move while Adela screamed for her to? Why did she not smile and say something witty as Adela begged her to speak, tell her it was a cruel joke? Why was there so much blood? Why was she burned with the mark of my family? I needed it to make sense. Her hands were cold in mine. She did not move, she did not speak. It was Olivia, the girl who people snapped at to stop talking.
